In act number one at the “Stute” we met; We loved all the girls at first glance, Twas a kindly fate that brought us here, And gave us a wonderful chance. The play was short ; oh, far too short, We linger and fain would stay But seniors must go when the curtain falls, And give the juniors full sway. We’ve played our parts well, so they tell us. This cast of seniors so youthful and glad. Through these two acts our roles were played And none of the scenes have been sad. The curtain rises on the stage of life; The seniors again have a part. They no longer revel in fun at the “Stute” Into the real drama of life they start. On that larger stage in the world’s great play: Hillman’s training both guides and inspires, The happy scenes of that fleeting day Make of Life’s drama what the world requires. k f ' wo 22 Nell Hinze Hinze, Mississippi President of the Senior Class Business Manager Pioneer, ’29-30; Vice-President Dramatic Club. ’28-29; President Dramatic Club, ’29-30. Those who know her best appreciate her smiles and sweet disposition. She fills all offices with dignity and efficiency. Truly she is worthy of the name “Miss Hillman.” Martha Nan Reed Weir, Mississippi Vice-President of the Senior Class Nan — a lovable little brunette with never a frown but ever a smile for all the world. f 1930 t J % _ « Gladys Allen Pinola, Mississippi It seems to be quite the thing to be in love — at least that’s what one gathers from a chat with Gladys. Hose Mary Eubanks Sallis, Mississippi Secretary and Treasurer Senior Class Vice-President Junior Class, ’28-29; Secretary and Treasurer Senior Class, ’29-30; Reporter, Glee Club, ’29-30; Vice-President Adelian Society, ’29-30. A bright spot on the campus for three years, Rose Mary may count her friends as “legion.” i 24 Sarah Blackburn Vicksburg, Mississippi President of the Student Body Vice-President Glee Club, ’28-29; Reporter Service Se ekers, ’29-30; Secretary and Treasurer Glee Club, ’29-30. Quiet, thoughtful, kind, and sincere — such a girl is Sarah. As President of our Student Body she has performed her many duties faithfully and efficiently. Bonnie Corbax Meadville, Mississippi A jolly girl whom everybody loves and admires. Eunice B. Pettis Oxford, Mississippi Ambition, determination, and a beautiful spirit — these things we find in Eunice. Doris Holland Oakland, Mississippi A good sport — alert to the fun and humor in everything. L f 1900 ♦ 26 Saha Edwards Baton Rouge, Ini. It hasn’t been as hard for Sara to win the whole school’s love as it has been for her to get fat. In fact, she isn’t fat yet and she can claim our love. Ettna Schrivener Derma, Mississippi Cheer Leader, ’28-29; Assistant Editor Pioneer, ’29-30. “We-We,” the mischievous, fun-maker, gay and impulsive. Her high spirit reminds us of a Swiss peasant girl swirling her skirts in tune to an old folk dance. 1930 • 27 Blanche Scruggs Gunnison, Mississippi Secretary and Treasurer Junior Class, ' 28-29; Vice-President Student Body, ’29-30; President Delta Psi Omega, ’29-30. She’s lovable and sweet — here’s to our Blanche. Elizabeth Phillips Hattiesburg, Mississippi President Glee Club, ’29-30. Elizabeth has made a liberal contribution to the various phases of Hillman life, but her musical ability has marked her as an outstanding student on the campus. I 28 Jewel Biggs Osyka, Mississippi Captain Basket Ball, ’29-30. To know “Billie” is to be her friend, and not to know her is to have a friendship circle incomplete. Marguerite Moore Weir, Mississippi Cheer Leader, ’29-30. Little “Gete’s” genial personality has won her many friends. 29 Nan Brittain Clinton, Mississippi Advertising - Editor of Pioneer, ’29-30. A true friend — capable of sharing one’s joy or sorrow. Mary Wall Osyka, Mississippi President Service Seekers, ’29-30. Mary is the one who seeks opportunity for service disregarding personal gain. Mamie Lee Ethel, Louisiana Secretary and Treasurer Adelian Society, ’29-30. Cheerful and helpful — a friend to all — that’s Mamie. Claudia Moore Smithdale, Mississippi President Adelian Society, ’29-30. So long as we live — just that long will we remember Claudia. _ ' 930 ♦ 4 Marietta Anderson Clinton, Mississippi President “Les Bavards,” ’28-29 and ’29-30; Editor-in-Chief Pioneer, ’29-30; Vice-President Student Body, ’29-30. True-hearted, whole-hearted, faithful, and kind; her modesty is the grace of her soul. TjOna Barber Hazlehurst, Mississippi A disposition to match her sunny hair. What else could one expect when her thoughts wander so often to “Paradise.” 32 Aletha Hower Winnsboro, Louisiana Pianist “Les Bavards,” ’29-30; Literary Editor Pioneer, ’29-30. A mischievous, fun-loving girl who reminds us of Shakespeare’s “Puck.” Marjorie Montgomery Good Pine, Louisiana Feature Editor Collegian, 28-29; Secretary and Tre asurer Louisiana Lasses, 28-29; Literary Editor Pioneer, 28-29; Editor-in-Chief Collegian, 29-30. Happy-go-lucky “Blondie,” whose flirting ability is unsurpassed, can keep it all hidden under a face which is a good copy of “The Age of Innocence.” 33 Alice Everitt Jackson, Mississippi The calm assurance with which Alice meets every situation is her outstanding characteristic. Aline Everitt Jackson, Mississippi What is sa id of Alice may also be said of Aline, only adding that Aline usually talks for Alice and herself. jnc Marie Duncan Lena, Mississippi Marie’s serious outlook on life insures her future success. Hazel Crowe Clinton, Mississippi Staunch and dependable — a real match for the tests of life. ■V Eldred Whittle Winona, Mississippi Never in her two years at Hillman has Eldred created anything but a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Mary Lou Melton Ackerman, Mississippi One finds in Mary Lou a conscientious and hard working student. L. T. Ginn Tylertown, Mississippi Quiet and unassuming — a good student and a loyal friend. Ruth Scott Clinton, Mississippi Gentle and calm with the ability to “pour oil” on troubled waters. _• 1930 A 37 Jewel Fortenberry Clinton, Mississippi Sincere and quiet — indeed a “Jewel.” Mary Polk Oakville, Mississippi Carefree and a good “Poker.” 38 Leslie Erl Parnell Atmore, Alabama President Y. W. A., ’29-30. happy hearted, fun loving sport, willing to go more than half way. Beulah Stringer Mozelle, Mississippi She believes that “Where there’s a will there’s a way,” and believing that she “wills.” 39 Amy Louise Weir Aberdeen, Mississippi Alice Little McCool, Mississippi Myrtis Bowie Carthage, Mississippi These three girls we call our “Specials.” Owing to some difficulties as to credits, they lack sufficient work to make them Seniors and have more work than is necessary for Juniors. We, therefore, have created this department in our Year Book especially for them. 40 Mrs. Howard E. Spell Junior Sponsor rj unior 9 o There grows the vigorous rose-tree On college campus green, That scatters far the fragrance Sweetening all the scene. But no one pauses near it, To quite discriminate Just how much joy is shed by each Of the roses, at each date. Quite all the scene is taken in, Unified for pleasure. Would just a full-blown rose suffice Without a bud for treasure? Quite so it is with student life, When seniors honor greet — Beautiful full-grown roses, But are not rose buds sweet? Then does it not require us, too, To balance the lovely view? We love to be the background buds That help to serve and honor you. We love to think we have a part In ours the college tree. We feel an honored pleasure To bloom in BUD you see. So as the annual cycle Of collegiate days doth pass, These background buds will roses be, And well enter the Senior Class.
