Leads The Way As the English department aims for the devel- opment of competence in writing, students write frequently and confer with their teachers about the effectiveness of their attempts to communicate through letters, expository writing, and imagina- tive writing. The Sentinel, the Gleam, and the Elm Tree provide opportunities for publication. Finally, the department favors visits to mu- seums and plays, and offers the pupils the use of audio-visual aids-films, radio, television-as tools for learning. Ruth C. Lindwall 127' Franklin D. english department Arthur Butts r-fb ffud Alice H Hogan Virginia Davis Ethel M Howlett Eleanor R Ilgen English Program The English program in Hillhouse is in accord with the ideas expressed in the recent publication, The Englirla Language Arif in the Secondary School, prepared by the Curriculum Commission of the National Council of Teachers of English, of which Dr. Sheridan, head of the department, is secretary. The Hillhouse program focuses upon individual student growth in four aspects of English: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Underlying all English work is emphasis on thinking. Independent reading is strongly encouraged. There is no set list of books which must be mastered , the range of reading is wide. Books for en- joyment, information, and challenge are selected in the light of student interests and needs Books that have endured are not slighted in favor of contemporary books both are included as is the literature of all nations 59' 'Qi DR MARION C SHERIDAN Head Bertha K Frehse 'Q' 55:5 iff 5 ' wi? history department Herman R Cherman Melbourne J Gallup Solomon Govrin Edith B Isbell History Course History, the study of past events with their causes and effects, is essential and interesting for all. Our history department, headed by Dr. Louise Wrinn, emphasizes the teaching of three histories: world history, modern history, and United States history. World history includes the study of the development of other countries. Understanding of the essential historical events of the nations of the world gives the student a keen insight into the rise and fall of govern ments and their effects upon people and upon the world in which we live DR LOUISE G WRINN Head I Esther E Mead 22 46 .
