Clears the Path In junior year, she helps him become ac- quainted with the many different schools and colleges and the professions that he may study through the visits of representatives from various vocations and from the numerous schools of higher learning. Although both group and indi- vidual guidance are given during the sophomore and junior year, only private conferences are held in the senior year, conferences at which each stu- dent may personally discuss his problems, both present and future, with his own counsellor. Special services, such as psychological testing, program for homebound students, job placement, and the giving of College Boards, Aptitude Tests, and Scholarship Tests are also administered by this department. english department Arthur Butts r-fb ffud Alice H Hogan Virginia Davis Ethel M Howlett Eleanor R Ilgen English Program The English program in Hillhouse is in accord with the ideas expressed in the recent publication, The Englirla Language Arif in the Secondary School, prepared by the Curriculum Commission of the National Council of Teachers of English, of which Dr. Sheridan, head of the department, is secretary. The Hillhouse program focuses upon individual student growth in four aspects of English: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Underlying all English work is emphasis on thinking. Independent reading is strongly encouraged. There is no set list of books which must be mastered , the range of reading is wide.
