Our Theme-New Horizons Each age is faced with critical problems, problems peculiar to its own time. The problems of today are no more crucial to us than the problems faced by our predecessors seemed to them. Yet we, the Hillhouse graduating Class of 1960, hear on all sides the warning words that our generation must meet the greatest challenge that has ever faced any generation in the history of the world-the challenge of the space age. Today the world lives constantly in the shadow of the fear of destruction by the nuclear weapons of space. From all sides we hear that, in war, the use of these weapons could mean complete annihilationg that in peace, over-experimentation in this field could mean distortion of this earth and of the living creatures on it. This is the insecurity of life today. Yet the picture is not all black. If we put our scientific knowledge to use rather than to abuse, the future can be one of real progress. There are many ways, for instance, in which the new knowledge of the mechanics of space can work for us. Travel around the globe can become faster and easier and safer. In the field of medicine, our knowledge of nuclear radiation can carry hope for the control of diseases now uncontrolled. Industry, too, can use nuclear control to increase its production. And this is only the beginning, other possibilities for helpful application of our sometimes dangerous knowledge are numerous. Yes, there is hope in the soaring sixties. As the atom bomb has hurled us into NEW HORIZONS in outer space, so we, the members of the class of 1960, can reach for new horizons of the mind. And in doing so, we can channel our thoughts and energies for the peace and security, not the disintegration, of mankind. Let us, therefore, face the new horizons that open now before us, not with fear and dismay, but with hope and with conhdence in a glorious future. We of the Elm Tree student staff wish to express our sincere thanks to our faculty advisors: Mr. Robert Gosselin, chairman, Mr. Albert Gray, assistant chairman and photog- raphy, Miss Alice Hogan, literary, Mr. Louis Szemanczky, art, and Miss Elizabeth Ma- lone, junior board, for their patient and untiring guidance in the publication of this book.
