One of my teachers once described himself as a man who divides his time evenly between learning and wishing he were learning. I know just what he means. Learning for the Jew is not Just an activity or a hobby. It is a pas- sion, perhaps even an addiction. How else can we explain our fascination with learning? Think of the way we celebrate the completion of the Torah on Simchat Torah onl we start readin 1--- , 5,' X 9 it all over again! It is as if the Jews have turned the myth of Sisyphus on its head. we roll the stone of learning to the top of the mountain and Joyously celebrate its tumble to the bottom where we can start to roll it up again. Learning to us means plugging into the fun- damental forces of reality. It is the way we get it together with G-d and ultimately the only way we get it together in ourselves. Beginnings captures moments of study and moments of play, moments of solitude and moments of encounter, moments of joy. These pages chron- icle through word and picture your school-life 'H ,Q experience. Remember and learn. , f f T ' 1 T 1 I . , .f ,Mx-a,,, N Our Torah begins with the words Breishit Barah Elokim.H The simple meaning of this phrase is Hln the beginning G-d created.n The Rabbis explain, however, that the word UBreishitH can be interpreted in the following manner. Since the Torah is referred to in Proverbs as HReishit Darko,H the word could mean HFor the sake of Torah.H Thus, for the sake of Torah the world was created. The concept of beginnings, of cre- ation, connotes study of and fulfillment of Torah. Our beginnings too involve the learning of Torah. Our students have come together to pioneer in the creation of a complete elementary and secondary school devoted to excellence in Torah study and the integration of that study with an equally ex- cellent program of general studies. Our faculty has tried to implant in the student the values of Torah. We hope to see these values manifested in a positive relationship with G-d and man. The word Hbeginningn implies continuation, growth, and fulfillment. It is our prayer that the dreams of our students will come to fruition and that they grow from strength to strength in the study and fulfillment of Torah. CLAJL.-f
