A Story Maxine Pinkas Clean up your room before you go out to play. Your brother's room isn't always a mess. Why are you so terrible? Mother is yelling at me again. Terrible?! I'm not so ter- rible just because I'm not like johnny. My room is a mess because I like to play. So does johnny but mother cleans his room. Well I'm not going to clean it. I'll sneak out and ' go to play with Billy and Tommy. Having a big brother is a curse, I complained to Billy. Mother loves him more than me. He is such a sissy and a goody-goody. We sat down by the river and threw rocks to the bottom of it. Billy and Tommy were talking about baseball. They each had their stacks of baseball cards out and they were comparing them. I sat by myself leaning against a big oak tree. I thought about mom and dad and johnny. They didn't love me. They didn't want me there. I was just stuck there, probably by accident. I pulled a small piece of grass out of the ground and examined it closely. There was a baby ant on it, running in every direction. At least he is free. He has no older brother to get him into trouble. How I hate johnny. I hate him and my mother will all my heart. My dad ain't so bad. He favors johnny too, but not as much as mother. I'm in a cage which my parents call a home. Why can't l I be free like the ant? The next thing I remembered was lying in bed. Nobody was in my 1' ' l room and the door was closed. I didn't remember what happened but I W l felt something was wrong. It was too quiet in the house. Mother ' wasn't yelling at me like always. I heard a quiet sound like somebody y X was crying. It all started coming back to me now. I was walking into the I ' house earlier that afternoon. I remember mother was crying and dad ff' was standing beside her. Although he was trying to comfort her, his X X , face was torn with grief. I looked down at my brother's bed where they Q X ff standing. I wondered if he had a home to go to like I did.
