GBZIZIAIIIPI A good man out of the ,good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things. Saint Matthew 12:35 Mr. Henry P. Bennett was such a man. He pos- sessed the firmness of the soldier, the tact of the true diplomat, the virtue of the Christian gentleman. He needed all of these quali- ties in his work as the first principal of Hillcrest. 1 To consolidate three in- dependent schools into one was not easy, but Mr. Ben- nett was the right man for the task. He made consoli- dation work so well that patrons, teachers, and stu- dents respected and loved him for it. It seems espe- cially appropriate to say of him, Blessed is the peaco- maker: for he shall sec' God. Hillcrest will stand as a living monument to the memory of this good man. Our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Anabel XV. Stogner for the Memoriam Page Selections. It is a building, it is a place of employment, it is an opportunity to participate with friends in study, athletics, and social activities, it is a challenge to young minds to develop and mature, it is happiness and sad- ness, success and disappointment, the loss of inno- cence and the moment of truth. The four years spent at Hillcrest are not merely a time of preparation for life: it is life. It is the American Dream come true, it is the hopes of proud parents, it is the future of today's youth. Hillcrest is at the same time many things practical and many things visionary: it has qualities both tangible and intangible. Many of its qualities can be seen, oth- ers can only be felt. Since music and poetry best ex- press deep meaning and stirring truth, perhaps the true meaning of Hillcrest is best embodied in the Hillcrest Alma Mater. Once a song is learned it is easy to sing it without thought of its meaning. Our hope is that this never happens with Hillcrest students as we sing our Alma Mater. While singing of honor, loyalty, and truth, may our words not be hollow sounds, but may our voices tell what our hearts truly feel. Throughout this book we have tried to tell in words and pictures the true and full meaning of Hillcrest High School by using the thoughts found in our school song. H ere's to thee! Oh Halls of H illcrest, Hail O hail to thee. Through the years we'll try to always Hold thy laurels high. Thoaghts of thee will grow more tender As time passes by. Dear Old Hillcrest, may our hearts Be filled with loyalty. Here's to thee, O Hillcrest High School, We'Il be true to thee. I PXHRQ, 79 rf . FACULTY Here's to thee, O Years from now when we are remembering our high school days, what will come to our minds? Certainly we will recall our class- mates and friends, and the activi- ties and parties. Yet we will also think of our teachers for they are the center of our school. They rep- resent the purpose of any educa- tional institution. This purpose is to bestow knowledge. As is true with friends, we will be reminded of one teacher above another. Maybe it will not be pos- sible to picture her face, and per- haps we will not even know her name, but as we look back, we Hill crest High School will realize how she helped to build our character and guide our lives on the right course. The memory of a friend some- how fades as time passes, but a teacher stays with us in every act we perform. Each day we use knowledge that a teacher some- where has studied, acquired, and then given to her students. Hillcrest has been fortunate in having a fine teaching staff since the beginning in 1957. As we think of our faculty let us remember them with love and gratitude. Surely they have been true to us. May we always be true to them. , we'll be true to thee Sv l 9 J,f f '35 s K 1' K f .lfla ,vw 'Ns Z- z' - --E f Henry P. Bennett, Principalg NVilliarn R. Moody, Assistant Principalg and I. E. 'I6 In Memoriam The memory of a great teacher becomes a living archive out of which flows a stream of inspiration. To Mrs. Olive Thomason Templeton, teaching was more than a profession: it was a calling. Fortunate, indeed, are we who knew her as teacher and friend. VVhat more fitting tribute can we pay to her memory than to say, Here was a teacher, sincere, conscientious, faithful, and fair ? She was sincere, without hypocrisyg conscientious, without bigotry, faithful, without boasting, and fair, without harshness. Her memory will always linger as a benediction upon her students and associates. Some will remtmber the facility with which she demonstrated the skills of typingf Some will remember her in connection with the intricate pattems of shorthand. Some will remember the patient ex- planations of the complex bookkeeping problems. Some will remember her encouraging them to write for the school paper. Some will remember her kindness in dealing with older students in veterans school. Some will remember her fortitude through a painful illness. All will remem- ber her as a living teacher, and her influence will be a living force. CLASSES Alma Mater, thou will ever live in memory Someone has compared the class section of a high school yearbook to an evergreen tree. When thinking of an evergreen the words fresh- ness, never dying, and constant renewal of new life come to mind. What better way is there to de- scribe our classes? In progress there is a joy and a sentimental sadness. Someday each of us must leave high school, which has been our way of life for several years, and face a new and chal- lenging world. It has been our goal to educate our minds sufficiently in order to be able to carry out our purpose in life. Each of us will be i saddened at the thought of leaving and perhaps a little frightened at the thought of beginning, but this is the plan, and life must go on. The life of the school is it's stu- dents. Each student will remember this particular year as special in some way. Thus, we can confident- ly say that though the years may pass and people disappear, the life of Hillcrest High School will always live in the hearts of those who have labored there. Alma Mater thou wilt ever live in our memory. At first glance they might seem to take away from class time and to be a hindrance to complete devotion to study. But take a closer look. In joining a club we choose one that deals with a sub- iect in which we are interested. Thus we are with people who enioy the same activities we do, and together, we can ad- vance in the area best suited to our own personalities. We learn to co-operate with others, and to share in responsibility. This is important to anyone, for in life the ability to co-operate and the ability to receive co-operation are absolutely neces- sary. Being a responsible person goes hand in hand with this. Leadership is another quality which we develop which is closely related to the others. All of these qualities-interest, desire to advance, co- operation, acceptance of responsibility, leadership-combine to make up a high standard for the student of Hillcrest and a high standard of living for the future. Now, perhaps we can better understand the value of our clubs and gain the fullest benefits from them. Then we will be able to say, Through the years we'll try to always hold thy laurels high. Student Council Publishes First School Handbook I MIKE LEY Student Body Vice President This bulletin board, located in the office wing, is maintained as a special project of the stu- dent council. 70 BOBBY HAMBY Student Body President Wf, JEAN MCCLURE Student Body Secretary-Treasurer WANDA SNOW Student Body Reporter VVhen Hillcrest students returned to school last Sep- tember, they were presented copies of The Hillcrest High School Student Handbook, made possible through the efforts of a hard-working student council. The paper is published six times a year by the journalism class. Highlights s t a ff members worked hard selling candy during November and December. Proceeds from the candy sales were used toward expenses of publishing the paper. On October 15, Highlights staff members played host to the annual meeting of the District IV South Carolina Scholastic Press Association. Student journalists and advisors from twenty-one schools in Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, and Laurens counties attended this meeting. Early in the year, the newspaper staff joined the Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School journalists. In order for a student to become a member of this club, he must meet the standard quali- fications set up by Quill and Scroll. Dear old Hillcrest, may our hearts be filled with loyalty One of America's strongest char- acteristics is her competitive nature. ln high school, too, there are many types of competition, but the most exciting is found in our sports. What could be more tense than a TD made in the last minutes of the game, or the drive down the court for that last second basket, or that last hundred yard stretch when you pray for wings on your feet? And amid all the shouting and breathtaking motion, we find a strong sense of unity has devel- oped. The school is bound together in its desire to win. And in setting a goal to be the best athletes, we attain something of much more value. We build a strong charac- ter, find a sense of fair play, learn to be good losers, and create loy- alty for our school. Loyalty demonstrates the pres- ence of devotion and love. lt is a persistent determination to stand by our school and teams through the wins as well as the losses. No mat- ter where a school ranks, if this quality is missing, one of the de- sired results of competition has been lost. As we look back over this year, let us examine ourselves to see if we gave the school all the loyal support it needed. lf not, then we can give more in the years to come. Dear Old Hillcrest, may our hearts be filled with loyalty. Tommy Thompson scored on a -12-yard run in the first quarter, and Howard Hewitt went over from 7-yards out. Butch Collins kicked one extra point. Hillcrest- l9 Ware Shoals 12 The Hillcrest Rams broke a 12 game losing streak when they came from behind in the last four minutes of the season opener to down the VVare Shoals Hornets 19-12. Phil Hathcox scored the first Rams touch- down, followed in the scoring by Dan Balcombe and Butch Collins. Hillcrest - O Greer -'39 XVhen the ever powerful Greer High Yellowjackets swarmed all over the Hillcrest field the Rams were stung with their second loss in a row. The Rams offence never could get rolling and the defense could not con- trol the fast Greer hacks. The final score was 39-0. Hillcrest- 7 Laurens - 7 Looking like a different team, the Rams batted Laurnes High around for a quarter and then scored on a 19- yard pass from Sammy Sloan to Dan Balcome. Butch Collins kicked his third extra point of the year. But the determined Laurens team scored in the second half to tie the game 7-7. H lcrest - 7 Blue Ridge - O The Rams picked up their second victory of the season by defeating the Blue Ridge Tigers 7-0. Howard He- witt took a pass from Sammy Sloan and scampered 25-yards to paydirt in the final period. Lawrence Blakely. Larry Snipes, and Chuck Kearney played well on defence for the Rams. Hillcrest- 7 Daniel - 24 Living up to their praise of being a l00?2 better team than last year's, by Daniel's head coach, the Rams fought hard for one of their best games of the season. Daniels, being one of the strongest teams in the conference, scored in every period, but had a hard time doing so. The lone Ram score came in the final period when Howard Hewitt took a pass from Sammy Sloan. . v - in . .mum ma Hillcrest- 7 Ccirolino - 7 The Rams jumped off to an early lead over Carolina in their annual rivalry, but the Trojans tied the score before half-time. Eddie Rice scored for the Rams and Butch Collins split the up-rights for the extra point. The Rams defense made several goal line stands. Larry Snipes and Chuck Kear- ney played well for the Rams also. Hillcrest- 7 Palmetto - l9 The Mustangs racked up two quick touchdowns in the opening minutes, then held on as the Rams outplayed them the rest of the game. In the final quarter the Mustangs could not penetrate within the Rams 40-yard line. But the only score the Rams could tally was a pass from Sammy Sloan to Howard Hewitt. The final score was 7-19. Hillcrest- O Wolhollo - O The Rams played host to the Wal- halla Razorbacks on a very soggy, cold, and windy field. Two long runs by Cary Long broke it open in the second half, as the Rams absorbed their fifth loss, 20-0. Hillcrest - O Easley - 34 The Easley Green Wave rolled over the Rams 34-0 in the final game of the season as fumbles plagued the Hillcrest team throughout the game. One fumble led to a Green Vifave score, and another stopped a Hillcrest drive on the Easley 12-yard line. Seniors Juniors The Senior-Junior game was main- ly a defensive battle, being played for the most part between the twenty yard lines. In the picture Leonard Sprouse, Dave Richardson, and Chuck Kearney rush Sammy Sloan who tosses a pass to Buddy Long. Seniors - 7 Juniors - O For the first time a Senior-Iunior football game was played, with the Seniors coming out on top 7-0. Oh Halls of Hillcrest, Hail O Hail to thee In our years here at Hillcrest we have found many friends in the business world who have given us their interest and cooperation. The HlLLTOPPER staff wishes to express its sincere appreciation to these various concerns for their sup- port. An ad section often goes unno- ticed and unacclaimed by the stu- dents. However, it should be con- sidered important for each year these pages are necessary in order to publish our yearbook. Hillcrest is fortunate in having three towns from which to solicit advertisements. None of these has ever let us down in any way. Each has always shown a desire to help the HILLTOPPER become the best publication in this region. Turn through the pages and read the ads. Then think of this as an up- to-date list of men and their com- panies who have shown interest in this your school. The HILLTOPPER staff wishes to encourage you to remember the names of these places of business, and then give them your support as they have given theirs to us. The people who are represented here are recognizing this school as an institution worthy of their time and money. ln this manner they have said to us, Here's to thee!
