Leaders Set Program Educators Recognize Needs of Youth Dr. Joe Kuklenski, deputy superintendent for instruc- tion, was responsible for directing and coordinating the educational program under the general direction of Sup- erintendent Gratf and in accordance with the Board of Education policy. Some of his responsibilities included supervising long and short-range planning ot the educa- tional program, compiling reports for the Board of Ed- ucation and the public, and evaluating the progress of the schools. Dr. Kuklenski will assume the position of Superinten- dent of School District R-I2 on August l, 1970. Dr. A. M. Alexander, assistant superintendent for secondary education was responsible for the. adminis- V tration and general supervision tor the secondary school program. ln November, Dr. Alexander was a participant in the Invitational Educational Seminar Tour to study Soviet Education and compare it with non-Soviet educa- tion in Europe and America. One of his basic aims for the secondary schools was that we should hold as many ot the million dropouts as possible and provide all students with maximum help for living a lite and for earning a living. I A A L Administrators Reco-gnize Challenge of Learning Dr. Willard J. Graff Superintendent of Schools As superintendentlof schools, Dr. Willard J. Graff continued to emphasize the needfor quality education, effective learning, and the motivation of youth to pursue excellence in education. Dr. Graff provided leadership for the 26,000 students in the fifty-seven' schools and advised the Board of Education on matters of school policy and administration. Under ljrf Craff's leadership, Springfield has the lowest pupil- teacher ratio it has ever had. Technical training has been provided for students and adults. Besides performing the many duties of his demanding iob, Dr. Graff enioyed personal contacts with the students. In an assembly speech he mentioned some of his basic con- cerns: Emphasizing self-respect and the dignity of each individual, developing self-reliance and initiative, and achieving proper balance between individualism and conformity. Dr. Graff urged the young to perceive and accept the concept that Respect for constituted authority and the law is a requisite of human liberty and that the individual's well-being is dependent upon the common welfare.
