Ballads, essays awaken depths of interest Students composed ballads, wrote essays, and studied ad- vanced vocabulary through the use ot records, tilms, and oral presentations in the Language Arts Department. Participles stopped dangling and the subject-verb torms be- came agreeable as the principles ot grammar and usage be- came tamiliar to the English l classes. English ll classes gave complete attention to vocabulary development and oral interpretation, while English lll provided an increase in knowledge ot the great ideals ot American democracy through American literature. The reading ot Shakespeare's plays, Chaucer's tales, and lvlilton's poems gave English IV L students an excellent back- ground in classical literature. A balance between the me- chanics ot English and experiences in literature was achieved to tultill student needs in English lV C.
