The Importance of Being Ernest Autumn '77 saw the production of a Wilde comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, forthrightly presented in full Edwardian gallop by a zestful cast. The Great Oscar's frothy, cyni- cal commentary on the perils of passionate court- ship dealt with such earth-shaking questions as: What does a man do if his sweetheart doesn't like his name? fHe gets christened as soon as he can trap the Vicar alone.l How does a girl get engaged to a man she's never met? fShe writes the whole business up in her diary.J How does a young man who was found as an infant in a black handbag- with handles-in Victoria Railway Station rapidly acquire enough socially acceptable relatives to impress the dragon of propriety he hopes will be his mother-in-law? fSorry, but that's the plot.j Of course it all came out well, providing theatre- goers with an evening of wit and epigrams and Hill Players with another triumph. Cast members included Mike Zebell as Alger- non, Becky Scott as Gwendolyn, Dallas Collins as Iohn, Cindy Whittle as Cecily, Iacque Carmichall as Miss Prism, Randy Arnold as Dr. Chausible, Amy Roy as Lady Bracknell, E.C. Rosson and Brenda Moore as family servants.
