The college Rangers, considered the strongest of the college quartets, played outstanding ball despite the loss of two key players before the season had elapsed. The rugged college cagers won three straight conference tilts before the Commandos sprang a stunning upset on the Rangers. They had eliminated the Bugs Bunnies, Warhawks, and Thunderbirds, but fell to the spirited Commando five. Although it had no conference bear- ing, a return engagement of the two teams brought an over- whelming triumph for the Rangers. Once beaten, the strong collegians met defeat at the hands of the Champions in the season's finale. The Ranger crew was known as the five iron- men at the close of the season after two stellar ballhawks, Iessie Carl Gilley and Leon Breeding were lost to the Army. Bryant, Hughett, and Williamson, along with high-scoring Cap- tain Hoyle bore the brunt of the attack. The title-winning Ieeps from High School clinched the crown by winning all five of their basketball skirmishes. They opened the season's initial game by defeating a band of scrapping Com- mandos by the score of 31-20. The potent High School quint erased their other league foes one by one in their elimination grind. They completely outclassed the Thunderbirds by a devas- tating count of 50-2. The Bugs Bunnies, their schoolroom mates, bowed to them 39-17. The undefeated crew then blasted the hapless College Warhawks, 37-9, and the game-of-the-year that determined the championship was the IeepRanger clash in which the titleists defeated the rough collegians, 24-12. The Ieeps were paced by Forrest Clary, lanky high-scoring for- ward, who racked up 44 tallies for the season. Bill Tom Autry, Rudy Maldonado, Omar Keeton, and Oliver Littlejohn all com- bined to produce a smooth-working aggregation. They opened their season's encounter with an 18-9 triumph over the Warhawks. Their success was shortlived, however, as defeats began and continued to stack up on them for the rest of the season. A group of hard-fighting boys, but just not able to click. The Birds suf- fered the season's worst humiliation when the Ieeps trounced them, 50-2. Irvin, Sawyer, W. Wooten, Harvey, Reed and Cap- tain Morgan carried the load. CAPTAIN BEN MORGAN Hillsboro , outstanding as a defensive play- W er-directed the gallant efforts of the Birds.
