New Programs Encourage Young Minds The elementary school has taken on a new role. New Pro- grams have been added to the usual course of the day. The children are now allowed to choose elective courses the last hour on Wednesdays. This enables them to study areas of interest. Mr. Birkholz is teaching science to the fifth and sixth grad- ers. e let the students build rockets and launch them at the football field. Mrs. Sampson, a volunteer, has been teaching German. Drama courses are taught by Miss Willett. Other courses include Cross Stitching, Art, Macrame', Paper Mache', SandfSeed Painting, Model Kit Assembly, and Study Hall. During other hours of the day, the students are experiencing new learning techniques. Fourth through sixth grade change teachers for different subjects. It certainly breaks the mono- tony of sitting in the same room all day. The Gifted program is taking shape this year. The program is offered in the subject areas of math, language arts, social studies, and science. The purpose of this program is to ex- pand academically the creative thinking of students with more advanced abilities. The students have a commitment, as well as the teacher. They must keep up with their regular studies and extra work or they will be taken out of the program. This year Hill City Elementary will hold the First Annual Spelling Bee Contest. Ten schools will participate in the event. The new programs are improving each year. Next year the faculty hopes to include even more areas of challenge. fTop Left! Resource The Resource personnel help children in spe- cial areas, like remedial reading, special edu- cation, and speech therapy. Mrs. Leanne Patterson has been with the Hill City School system for five years. She received her Bachelor's degree for Elemen- tary Resource at Black Hills State College. Mrs. Patterson also is the treasurer for the Hill City Education Assoc. Mrs. Lucy Williamson is experiencing her second year at Hill City. Her main course this year is teaching Title 1 Remedial Read- ing to students grades 1-6. She attended col- lege at Black Hills State College where she receive a B.S. in elementary education. She enjoys summer classes at USD in Vermillion and being a mother of two: Jenny 9, Jeff 2. Mrs. Janet Stahl is a very busy woman this year. Along with being active with elemen- tary education, she is also the Junior class advisor and Pep Club advisor for the High School. She studied at Mankato State Col- lege where she received a Bachelor's degree in elementary and special education. Her goal is to achieve a Master's in Learning Dis- abilities. Mrs. Michele Johnson achieved her Bache- lor's degree and her Master's degree at the University of South Dakota. Mrs. Johnson is teaching courses in speech and English Ther- apy. She is the Chairperson for South Dakota Speech-LanguageHearing Association. Dur- ing the summer she works at Pulmer Gulch lodge, which she and her husband own. Mrs. Judy Shrank has been with the Hill City School System for two years. She pre- viously taught in Rapid City. As the librar- ian, she has her hands full with both elemen- tary and high school students. She earned her Bachelor's degree at South Dakota State University.

Music Activities 12150 -.-.-......-.- .--.-14.1 The Jr. High band had thirty members this year. They performed at pep rallies, basketball games, and the Christmas and spring concerts. Several students went to a solo and ensemble concert in the spring. Mr. Pence gave lessons to the students. Jr. High chorus had thirty eight members. They kept busy learning new songs. They performed at the Christmas and spring concerts too. Mrs. Eng- strom taught all the elementary students chorus this year. They performed at the Christmas and spring concerts.
