The cross country team at Hill City High School was off to an early start this year with their first meet on September fifth. The team joined with the Custer cross country team in a coop arrange- ment and as such saw the season through to the last meet on Oc- tober 3'1st. Consisting mostly of underclassmen, the team should be even stronger next year, es- pecially with returning under- classman Shelly Nelin who ran in the state meet after placing 45th GT the feQiOl'1Cl FTTGGT. The biggesT challenge, howev- er, came in The lasT semesTer when sTudenTs prepared for small-group conTesT and The 2nd annual pops concerT, all wiThin an 8-week period. The performance was a huge success with a large turnout both nights. The cast began practicing at the begining of the school year. However rnuch credit the cast received, the show couldn't have gone on without the help of the backstage crew. lvlr. Hayes' shop class, and Mrs. Gillespie's art class. The 4987 Varsity basketball season was much better than in the past. The lead scorer for the Rangers this year was Heidi Peterson with an amazing sea- son total of 230 points. The girls worked hard and enjoyed the season, with the exception of some loud com- plaining about early morning practices and killer drills.
