Some wore short, shorts to school and were sent home to change clothes. Others were to busy talking to be learning, or in general, 'goofing off.' The class saw some of their longtime friends and classmates leave to attend other schools in-state and out-of-state. Sports and cheerleading became a highlight this year for many of the class. This was the first year they had an opportunity to prove themselves on the court as well as off the court. The freshmen had to make some serious decisions involving their four years in high school. They had to chart what course in life they were going to take...on to college, a vocational school or a full-time job. Most freshmen had not decided what their future plans would be, therefore choosing courses was a difficult decision for most. Mr. Broderson came to the rescue with his expert advice and let them know which courses they should take. 13.6. P00 -,I s ,Q A , 'R ,al J Mike Johnson Pat Kelley John Kellsy Connie Knudson Ranger 1986 Page 20 The freshmen learned to live with the constant harassment that goes along with the grade. Some were dumped in trash-cans, locked in lockers, or just given a bad-time. Although, all of the pranks and harassment from the upper-classmen was all good natured fun. Overall, the freshmen class adjusted well to their new environment. On occassion would wonder if they would ever see their sophomore year but they managed survive. After a tenuous first year, the freshmen class will continue on to handle more responsobility in and out of the classroom as they progress through high school. v 5 -:Er-ggi-. Figuring out a class schedule was a tedious and demanding job each semester. He also gave all of the standardized tests that are required each year. One of his most important jobs was to ready senior class students for college. About half of the senior class made the decision to attend college. Mr. Broderson helped the students choose the college that would best suit their needs and ability. Many of the students choose to attend a college or university that was in South Dakota but a few decided to attend universities in other states. Science is fun and exciting Students in Mr. Struble's science classes learned what made the life around them tick. Students dissected different types of animals to learn what made them function and students learned how the earth evolves everyday. Mr. Struble taught Earth Science, Chemistry and Biology this year. Chemistry students learned what made up different types of chemical formulas and also learned how to mix a few of their own formulas. - Biology students spent much time learning about how the plants and animals on earth lived and how they were formed. Students also had the chance to disect a frog in class. j Earth Science students made an in-depth study of how the earth was formed and why it continues to change on a daily basis. Volcanos and earthquakes were studied because they shape the earth. Students also learned about different types of rocks and minerals that are in the Black Hills. But the student body couldn't rally the team to victory without the loyal support ot the school's cheerleaders. This year over twenty girls and guys tried out for the few spots on the cheerleading squads. This year marked the first year in many that HCHS had a male cheerleader. Ricky Johnson helped to lead the girls' basketball team to a successful season and proved that it was a man's world too in the female dominated cheerleaders squads. Pat Hotchkiss was the new cheerleading advisior this year. She took over the duties from Sue Anderson. Everyone in school shows their support for the home team and the cheerleaders are responsible for Hill City's great cheering at home and away games. The cheerleaders are also responsible for putting on pep rallies before many games. They also put in many hours after school practicing and making the huge banners that grace the halls and gym at HCHS. Not Just Another Pretty Face Only the pretty girls ever become cheerleaders. Sound familer. Not at HCHS. This year was different. Ricky Johnson was selected to cheer for the girls' basketball team. He may be a pretty face. But he is not a she. Ricky surprised many students with his cheering abilities and his strong voice during the games. He led the girls' basketball cheerleaders throughout the season with his strong cheering ability. How important are the cheerleaders? As important as the game itself. There were only a few seniors on the squad so next year most of the team will return. The experience the team eamed this year will show in next year's season. Mr. Dave Larson coached the girls' team with assistants Mr. Al Birkholz and Mr. Clyde Naasz. The girls won first place in the Heart of the Hills Track meet and the Rushmore Conference, both of which were held in Hill City. The girls had several members qualify to attend the state meet in Sioux Falls. Although the team did not place in the top ten, they had an excellent showing. Practice sessions consisted of breaking into small groups after school and practicing on there individual specialties. The team was broken up into a sprinters group, long distance group, hurdlers group and field events group. One of the past-times during track meets was to lay out. By the end of the season much of the team had a million dollar tan. Ranger 1986 Page 66 V , f ' v . as Q' . is Q . Coach Al Birkholz took Suzy Tully, Sami Simmons and Casey Nelson to many meets this year. Even the team was small in numbers they often came in first at the meets they attended. The team finished the season with six wins and ten loses. This year the junior varsity played teams that were usually larger than Hill City. Playing schools that were a class ahead of Hill City had its draw backs but the team fared well against most of the larger schools. Many of the junior varsity players saw double duty as they also played on the varsity team and practiced with the varsity team.
