AUCTIONS f. national This was the year of the presidential election. There were three major candidates: President Carter, up for reelection, Republican candidate, Ronald Reagan and independent, John Anderson. In the outcome Ronald Reagan was victor, taking over the office on January 20th. Some of Regan's goals include: cutting down on government spend- ing, putting a leash on inflation and lowering tax- es. On March 30th after just two months in office, Reagan was the object of an assassin's gun. Reagan was hit in the upper left side of his chest but not fatally. Three other persons were hit by the assas- sins bullets, a CIA official, A District of Columbia police officer and Mr. James Brady, Reagan's press secretary. The gunman's name was John Hinkley, a 25 year-old resident of Colorado. state Dakota Proposition was an initiated proposal to amend the South Dakota State constitution enti- tled Real Property Tax Limitation . This pro- posal was placed on the 1980 general ballot. The impact of the Dakota proposition on our state could have been extensive. The Dakota Proposi- tion was a proposal to roll back property taxes to 198 of the full and true valuation in 1977 and to limit any increase in valuation to 29? a year. This would have reduced property taxes to cities, towns, and school districts by one-half or more throughout South Dakota. Many people think that if the proposal would have passed, the result would have been an increase in sales tax or an income tax to replace the lost revenue. While Da- kota prop did not pass, it did have a considerable amount of support. international The US has had its ups and downs and certainly one of the downs would be the Iranian hostage situation. The whole business started in No- bember of 1979 when Iranian militants took over the US embasy in Iran. There were many negotia- tions and talks but the hostages were still kept in Iran. There were rumors of poor treatment and one hostage was released due to his health. In April there was a rescue attempt by the US but it failed. Three helicopters were crippled and one collided with a transport plane. Eight Americans lost their lives in this rescue attempt. Then in January of 1981, as Carter finished his last days in the oval office, hostage negotiations took a turn for the better. The US hostages would be released if Iranian assets held in the US were returned. On January 20, 1981, the day of Regan's inauguration, the hostages came home to thousands of cheering Americans. The teachers, however, think school should go on, to teach just a little bit more of the basic Math, Science and Social Studies.
