1 The speech team of 1985-86 had a “Superior” year in all aspects of the word. Many first year and returning students received superior ratings at the contests. The first competition was held at Trumbull, where Hildreth earned many superior and excellent ratings. Among these were the Drama Interpretation. The members of the Interpretation were Janel Kruse, Leann Johnson, Tami Lindau, Brenda Casper and Ronda Soker. Also, getting superiors were Scott Schwartz in Extemporaneous Speaking, Shelly Swarthout in Poetry, Amy DeJonge in Entertainment and Tami Lindau in Entertainment. The next contest was the District 10 contest held at Hildreth on March 20th. The team won the contest with nine members qualifying for the state meet. The Duet Acting competitors Ronda Soker and Eddy Fekrache placed first in their Duet and also qualified for state. Other state qualifiers were Linda Bunger in Original Speaking, Adrienne Benz in Informative Speaking and Bob Alberts with an Entertaining Speech. Other speakers who earned superiors included Janelle Harms, Michele Pollock, Duane Day, Jay Halsted, Amy DeJonge, Shelly Swarthout and Scott Schwartz. Excellent ratings were earned by Kandy Hunt, Chris Eynon, Leann Johnson and Tarcia Frerichs. All members greatly appreciated Mrs. Duncans help and would like to thank her for making them superior speakers.

Hildreth held its Eighth Annual Science Fair, organized by Mr. Lienemann, on February 10,1986. Judging of projects took place during the school day. Secondary award winners qualified to participate at the Central Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair held at Franklin, and Kearney State College at the Central Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair on March 1, 1986. Dan Benz was chosen as an alternate for the International Science and Engineering Fair at Fort Worth, Texas. Dan’s project was entitled: Determining the Effectiveness of Farm Disinfectants. Twelve top projects from the Hildreth Science Fair were chosen to attend the Central Nebraska Regional Science Congress held on March 12 at Kearney. The following students attended this showing: Dan Benz, Jared Benz, Linda Bunger, Becky Casper, Kim Evers, Jay Halsted, Mary Pollock, and Jerel Sanders. In addition to these students, 13 more attended the Central Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair at Franklin: Bob Alberts, Clark Bauer, Brenda Casper, David Fuerst, Kandy Hunt, Brandi Johnson, Leann Johnson, John Kelso, Mary Morris, Brent Nelson, Mileah Panter, Brad Quadhamer, Jerel Sanders, Kathy Swanson, Mike Dorn, and Tina DeJonge. The students enjoyed the experiences and they received many honors for their participation.
