Today we pause to recollect one special time and man Whose remembrance is permanently impressed upon my memory. One August morn, not so long ago, I stood wide eyed, waiting Mother at my side, smiling reassuringly. Yet I was timid and afraid . . . For at the end of the driveway was a monsterous yellow bus waiting to swallow me. Terrified, I entered - to travel to my first day of school But what could have been a frightful time became a joy • a thrill. For my bus driver calmed my frantic fear he smiled and welcomed me. Now I reminisce about that day and others . . . trips to town and journeys away Surrey with a Fringe on Top - 1890’s (Back row) Amy DeJonge, Eddy Fekrache, Brenda Casper - Editor, Bob Alberts. The 1985-86 Annual Staff is proud to send you on a trip through “A Time of Change.” The staff, made up of ten people, worked very hard planning pages, developing pictures, writing stor- ies, and selling ads. The staff traveled to Kearney two times, once to attend a workshop put on by our publisher, Walsworth, and the other to sell ads. The staff and the sponsors, Mrs. Fisher and Mr. Mietzner, hope you enjoy reliving the memories we have put together for A Time of Change. 4 5 Students enjoyed classes in art, shop, and photography during the 1985-86 year. Some of the art projects undertaken by the students this year were silk screening T-shirts and sweatshirts, working with clay, designing posters, and cutting and printing linoleum blocks. Theory and history of art was also studied. In shop classes students repaired many items around the school as well as made many beautiful and useful wood projects, and learned to weld correctly. Students learned how to cut, sand, stain and varnish different kinds of woods and many set out on new adventures of construction. Photography class was a new offering this year for Hildreth High School students. The students and Mr. Mietzner, their sponsor, was aided by the expertise of a member of the community during the first semester, Mr. Riley Waugh, who previously had been a professional photographer. Students learned the basics of good picture taking, film developing, and picture developing. The photography class, Regina Bunger, Shelly Hogeland, and Kandy Hunt, pose for the camera. 5 MfH Hildreth’s one act play Memori- al” was a very successful one. The cast placed second in competition at the conference contest. Hildreth hosted the District One Act Play Contest on January 22nd. At this competition, seven schools com- peted for the chance to compete at the State Contest. Hildreth once again was runnerup. Shelly Swarthout portrayed Mrs. Connor and Duane Day played her husband. The couple had lost their only son to war. They, their daughter, Leann Johnson, and their son's former fiance, Adrienne Benz, gather to watch the Memorial Day Parade and recall Billy. Without warning, Billy, Jay Halsted, reap- pears to attempt to know his family. The cast did a superior job and thank Mrs. Duncan for all her hard work. For the third year in a row, the mock trial team from Hildreth High School finished second in their district behind Alma. This year’s case dealt with sexual discrimination. The lawyers for the Greyhound team were Shelly Swarthout, Tarcia Frerichs and Brenda Casper. Adrienne Benz and Duane Day served as witnesses. In Phelps County Court, Hildreth defeated the Loomis mock trial team, and then lost to Alma for the right to go on to State Competition. They held a spaghetti feed and entertained the public with the presentation of Shoot-Out-at- Hole-in-the-Wall, their class play. They presented the mellerdrama on November 23 following a Kentucky Fried Chicken supper served by the mothers. The success of the Dinner Theater enabled the class to finance Prom which was held on May 3. The class worked hard but had a lot of fun and the rewards were plentiful. This event is being organized by Clark Bauer who chose a location four miles north and V t miles west of Hildreth. Clark is now a property manager with a degree in hot tub security. Clark is startled by a loud roar and the sound of breaking tree branches as Jay Halsted rolls into the yard. Hopping down from his standard army tank. Private Halsted thoughtfully presents our host with some commodity cheese for the hors d’oeuvres. Next, a familiar yellow cloud of smoke appears in the driveway and it's noticed that Michelle Pollock has transformed her infamous gold car into a bookmobile. Michelle explained she had trouble finding the reunion, because of her broken glasses — she saw a Stephen King double feature last night. Here comes Brenda Casper behind the wheel of her Lincoln Continental with “Brenda's Earring Boutique” printed on the door. Brenda has started her own business specializing in earring duplication. She is also a spokeswoman for Save the Buda's.” Arriving just behind Brenda Casper is Adrienne Benz. Adrienne says she has opened a quaint little Sombrero shop in Washington, D.C. In her spare time she writes speeches for politicians. Soon the festivities begin. It’s brought to our host's attention by Mr. Halsted that we are lacking refreshments. But the day is saved by Linda Bunger and Shelly Swarthout when they drive in with a big red wagon pulled by a team of horses. Linda is dressed in a nurse's uniform and accompanied by her husband who is now an M.D. Shelly is now a District Attorney and enjoys working with Mock Trial students in her spare time. And here comes Catherine Fecht, galloping to the scene on her prizewinning horse — Candy Apple Red. She announces that they’ve just won the Kentucky Derby and that she and her husband own their own horse ranch in Kentucky. Next, Eddy Fekrache and Barry Schmidt arrive together laughing about old football stories. Barry’s naval career takes up most of his time, but he often spares a few moments to catch a Dallas Cowboy’s game and visit Ed, who is Tony Dorsette’s personal valet. Clunk, clunk. Ah, the ever familiar sound of Susan Hoit's Cordoba comes putting into the driveway. She tells us that she’s still trying to sell it. She and her husband left the children back in Arizona. We see that Janelle Harms has pulled out her old brown ditch car for tonight, because of an accident that has left her good car in an unsalvageable state. When asked about it, Janelle only replies, Oh my stupid brother.” Janelle tells us that she has started the National Volleyball Crisis Hotline. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No! It's Duane Day parachuting from an Air Force helicopter. After a successful landing, he explains that he has just finished another secret maneuver. He apologizes for his beautiful wife who couldn’t join us as she is back at the Bel Aire mansion hosting a pool party. Next, Shahn Boss drives up in his family station wagon with his wife and two kids. He tells everyone he is working in Florida as a meteorologist. He says he still is in the National Guard and still attends guard duty once a month. Last, but certainly not least, comes Ronda Soker. Ronda now coaches a high school volleyball team. She and her team were affectionately given the name of Dracula and the Vampire Women.” ”1 don’t see why people think we’re always out for blood,” she says as she adjusts the bandages on her knuckles. After a pleasant day of talking and reminiscing about the old days, the party begins to break up. Clark says we will have to get together again real soon.” 53 d « « d d d « d « « d d « d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 i 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 • 9 9 • 9 9 9 9 • 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 99 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 1 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 ft 9 9 9 I 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 It is better to waste one's youth than do nothing at all. There the Hounds were defeated in the first round by McCool Junction and ended their season with an 18-5 record. The 1985-86 Varsity Volleyball team had a very suc- cessful year. They started with two wins before they were defeated by Wilcox. The Lady Hounds then regrouped to win the Hildreth Invitational for the first time ever. The girls then won the Loomis Invitational. After a loss to Law- rence, the Hounds went on to a five-game winning streak. The next big challenge, the NSCC Tournament, garnered the West Division title, for the Hounds. They then lost to C-H-B and Trumbull in the NSCC finals. Individual team members won numerous honors. Later, the celebra- tion was taken indoors to the multi-purpose room, which had been decorated in pink and blue by the pep club. The double theme for the occasion was Cherish and ’’Forever’’ and students and alumni danced to the music of Todd Chemmans from Holdrege. Highlights of the week-long celebration included Nerd Day,” “Rambo Pajama Day,” “Scum-out Day,” Clash Day,” and Spirit Day. Prizes were given to the win- ners of each day’s dress contest. After beginning with an exciting come-from-behind win over Bladen in the opening game followed by an overwhelming win over Campbell, the health of the Hounds began to falter. Along with their health, went their record. From the second week in the season until the finale against Wilcox in Sub-district play, the “flu bug and injuries plagued the Hounds, “never letting continuity to set in,” as Coach Boss stated. “As soon as we thought we were well again and ready to make a run for the State Tournament, we would lose a player or two and juggle our starting line-up.” From all this frustration their are silver linings in the clouds. Much valuable experience was given to younger players filling in for the injuries and illnesses. That could pay dividends next year. It will be needed as the Hounds will lose two senior starters, Shahn Boss and Clark Bauer and first substitute Jay Halsted. Hopes abound that '86-87 will prove an end to the Hounds frustrations. After a long week of hard preparation, the Junior class can, at last, enjoy the Junior-Senior Prom. Janelle Harms samples the punch while waiting for the dance to start. Sponsor, Mrs. Tammy Fritz, and her husband, Doug, arrive at the dance. Scott Schwartz, Troy Space, Darren Schenk and Brent Nelson pause on the scaf- folding while putting up decorations. The Fritters have unexpected company when the Indians attack a wagon full of women folk. The women are brought to safety by a new gang member Pinky, (Eddy Fekrache). Sweet Julie (Carol Hogeland) had been away to the East to learn the ways of a lady. Her tomboy sister Daffy (Kandy Hunt) accompanys her. Cattle Kate (Amy Jo DeJonge) is swindled into helping Slick pull off the big deal. The day is saved when the hero Horace Beamer, (Chris Eynon), shows up in the end. Horace falls in love with Julie and another unexpected love develops between Abner (Mike Crouse), Pa's Checker buddy, and Miss Prudence. The curtain, sound and lighting effects were done by LaFona Dallman. Everyone enjoyed the Dinner Theater tremendously. cui The senior class had a lot of fun learning their lines, collecting props, building sets, and staging this year's play, a murder mystery entitled “Absolutely Murder. In the plot of the play, Kate Landson (Adrienne Benz) and her two beaus, Sky Bently (Duane Day) and Lane Burrage (Clark Bauer), tried to persuade Kate’s Auntie Bess (Ronda Soker) not to buy an old mill house. They all had their reasons, but Sky went so far as to stage a “murder to keep her from buying. When there actually was a murder total madness reigns. This was especially true when Dr. Hooker (Jay Halsted) showed up with three insane girls, Lorna (Shelly Swarthout), Nan (Cathy Fecht), and Dottie (Brenda Casper). Other characters adding to the suspense of the play were Mr. and Mrs. Cordyce (Barry Schmidt and Michele Pollock), caretakers of the mill, Mrs. Ranch (Janelle Harms) the real estate lady, and Emmeline (Linda Bunger) Kate's friend, a nurse (Susan Hoit) and Charlie (Shahn Boss), the dead” man in the trunk. Sunday, May 18,1986, at 2:00 p.m. was a special time for fifteen Hildreth High School students. As the words of their song It's Time for Movin' On” rang out across the Hildreth High School Auditorium, parents, friends, and the seniors realized with certainty that it was indeed the end of their sojourn at Hildreth High School and a time for moving on to a new stage of their life — a time to say good-bye to the past and hello to the future. As Leann Johnson played the familiar chords to Pomp and Circumstance” and the seniors began the recessional, they were ready to take on the challenge of a new beginning.
