't GREYHOUND 81 1IILOKETII PUBLIC SCHOOL llihlrctli Nebraska 1080 - 1081 Instant Replay 1980-81 in Hildreth was much like most other years. Driving Main Street after games or school events was still a Hil- dreth tradition. Students were looking forward to the completion of the new tennis court and made full use of the community swimming pool during the summer months. The Hildreth Lion's Tractor Pull in August was still the big event of the year for the towns- people . Kearney and Minden were the places to go for excitement on weekends and an occasional weeknight. (pictures, page 3) Taco Runs, Movies, Pizza, Bowling, and Shopping were some of the activi- ties that the Hildreth Student Body enjoyed in our two neighboring cities. 1980-81 was a period of change and excitement in the world around us. (pictures, page 4) Two big political stories dominated the scene; the Iran- ian hostage crisis and the election and inauguration of President Reagan. The United States was joyful of the long-awaited release of our American hostages which took place on their 444th day of captivity; January 20, 1981. Other big stories included the erup- tion of Mt. St. Helens in Washington state; the new scientific findings of the planet Saturn from pictures taken by the Voyager spacecraft; the curiosity created by the T.V. show Dallas (who shot J.R.?); the Los Angeles Laker's winning the 1980 NBA World Championship; the Philadelphia Phillies winning the 1980 World Series; the Oakland Raiders winning the 1981 NFL Super Bowl; the devastating earthquake in Italy; the continuing concerns of the dangers of nuclear plants and waste; and the Iran- Iraq conflict. With everything around us happening so fast, we consider ourselves lucky to be living in a town that, as we mentioned before, was this year much like any other year. In other words, you could say that Hildreth will always be a place we can identify with no matter what happens anywhere else. Hildreth will always be home. 2 OCR ♦to o t« WHOVp amt which «at x CAM 3 I Enough !fept arbitrr Pffed States make “• ances” regarding the rctun. As tradition goes at Hildreth High, Homecoming i eek was filled with many activities and lots of enthusiasm. The students and the faculty dressed up all week to show their spirit for the upcoming game on Friday, October 3rd. The classes competed each day by who dressed up the most and who won the mini pcprally at the end of the day. Each class also made a sign for the gym and a display for the front lawn. All the events of the week led up to the big game against Trumbull. The girls vol- leyball team defeated the Bearcats in 2 sets, 15-11, 15-0 and after a hard-fought game, the football team was defeated 7-14. Following the game was the coronation ceremony of the King and Queen. The new 1080-81 King and Queen are Shawn Benson and Julie Jelden. The attendents were Lynette Nelson, Winkie Bienhoff, Teresa Swarthout, Jon Bunger, David Casper, and Jeff Anders. The dance followed in the M.P. room, music provided by Daddy Warbucks. The servers, Diane Casper, Julie Greening, Lori Schmidt, Dave Halbert, Mike Miller, and Lynn Harms, were appropriately dressed in flowered dresses and shirts to fit the theme. For dinner the Junior mothers prepared barbecued pork, green beans, scallop potatoes, tossed salad, and hot rolls. After the delicious dinner we had pineapple upside down cake to top it off. Following the dinner, Jeff Quinn, the guest speaker, talked about setting and obtaining goals. Then Shawn and Marilyn read the class prophe- cies and wills, which everyone enjoyed. After the banquet, the dance followed, music provided by Midwest Audio. Everyone seemed to have a super time and considered the prom a great success! 28 FANTASY ISLAND 29 ACTIVITIES 81 Activities Night is held in order to honor students for both athletic and scholastic achievements. The eight wins gave the Hounds enough District points to become District Champs and qualify for the State Playoffs. The Hounds beat tfl rated Arthur in the first round 19-18, but they fell to Greeley 34-24 in the semi-finals. The Hounds ended another fine season with a record of 9-2. The Hildreth volleyball girls had another fine year and ended the season with a 12-5 record. The girls tried a new offense, called the inter- national 4-2. It proved to be suc- cessful after a lot of hard work and practice. Hildreth held a four team tourney at the beginning of the year and received the third place trophy. Hildreth also hosted the NSCC Confer- ence tournaments, in which the girls placed second after a long, tough game. The captains for 1980 were two seniors; Andrea Osterbuhr and Winkie Bienhoff. Awards at the end of the year were given to the following: First Team All-Conference - Andrea Osterbuhr and Winkie Bienhoff. Sec- ond Team All-Conference - Julie Kruse. All-State Honorable Mention - Winkie Bienhoff. Congratulations on a great year. VOLLEYBALL YOU BET! The 1980-81 Basketball season for the Hildreth Greyhounds could be best des- cribed by the words hard luck . The Hounds lost several close games and played many state-rated teams. The 8-11 record was disappointing, but many people felt that with a few breaks it could have been much better. O'Neill. The 1980-81 Hildreth Annual staff had a very busy year indeed. The staff voted Winkie Bien- hoff to be editor of the annual and Teresa Swarth- out to be the assistant editor. Our trip to neighboring towns in September to sell ads turned out to be profit- able as well as education- al . We hope we have pro- vided an enjoyable year- book for everyone. We would also like to thank everyone who helped us out during the year, especially Barney Swanson of O'Neill Studio who took many of our group pictures for the annual.
