The Hildreth Band was organized in September, 1949. All of the students bought their own instruments with the exception of the large instruments such as the basses which were supplemented by the town. Instruction to each section of instruments began in November and continued through the first semester. The band began playing together the second semester and at that time was composed of approximately thirty-five members. The instrumentation is com- posed of all of the basic instruments. A Spring Concert was presented May, 1950. This year the band has been enlarged to forty-five members and several beginners. A pep band was organized to play at the home basketball games and was the first pep band ever to participate in the high school activities. On March 6th the band presented a Concert. This Concert was the first means of obtaining money for the new uniforms which the band hopes to purchase next year. The Hildreth Y-Teen Club was organized in 1931 by Mrs. Thelma James Newton. For the past few years the council has become very active in aiding the girls. The council has formed a local Y.W.C.A. Last year the girls held a Founder’s day program with Mrs. Newton as guest speaker. The verse choir presented several selections. Last summer three girls attended camp Merrill at Fullerton. This fall the club attended the district conference in Kearney where they had charge of the Worship service. Later Mrs. Carlson from Loomis and Mrs. Nelson from Holdrege con- ducted two interesting meetings at Hildreth. Throughout the past year the girls have expanded their financial budget by bake sales, magazine sales, and basket- ball lunch sales. An interesting feature has been added by giving at Christmas a mystic candle to the Senior girl who was secretly voted by the club as one deserving of it. Edna Hansen received this candle. This year the Y-Teens are joining the 125th club. For the past eight years Verna Freeman has been faculty advisor. 29
