Mr. Crist J orewon HILDRETH HIGH.......school of staunch, unswerving idealism....school rooms where brave dreams have been born...worn desks that contain in their woody hearts the secrets of years gone by....a faculty ever reflecting the same spirit of service, the same purpose....students bound together by a common interest, a common love, a common song........basketball games and cokes and puppy love and jitterbuggin’, and “the gang” ....laughter and tears and happiness and heartache....memories and dreams and ideals and far- reaching visions. Now it is time for us, the Seniors to say good-bye to dear, carefree school days, and start out on the road, with its hills, curves and detours, the road called Life. We must do away with childish things and shoulder the burdens of a war-mad world....may God help us! So it is that we, the Seniors of 1950-1951, proudly, but with tears in our eyes and regret in our hearts, present this annual to Hildreth High in the hope that it may serve as a lasting remembrance and a symbol of days and deeds that will live forever in our hearts. WHERE: Gymnasium of the Hildreth High School. WHEN: May 12, 1961 at 9:00 A.M. Wasn't it a beautiful day--just like the day we so anxiously left this build- ing and weren’t we happy. But after ten years of struggling for existence, we would have again enjoyed studying beside our fellow students and doing all in our power to get along with the teachers until the next day, hoping it would bring us better luck. We discovered that our class had been very fortunate as we looked over their happy faces. The affair started off with a bang, everyone boasting of their accomplish- ments. Jeannie Harms with that naturally streamlined figure related with pride her latest shows on Broadway but said that she intended to settle down with her family on her ranch in Texas. Merlin Rocker had retired to his home in the outskirts of Hildreth. He was the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for gaining peace in Korea. We couldn’t help but notice that he was wearing glasses. (Anyone who used their eyes as much as he ought to be wearing them). Lee Fritson attended the reunion with his arm in a sling. (A result of his battle with Petunia). He is a professional wrestler and has won every fight except the one with his wife. Rodney Bunger was there too. We were surprised to see him though because he had entered a contest competing with Betty Grable for the million dollar legs. Mary Harms had been traveling with her husband who was a represent- ative to Congress but for the past four years they had been living in Ong where she was chief telephone operator. Donna Jurgens has just been appointed to the position of Assistant Secretary of Defense which was recently vacated by Anna Rosenburg. Funniest thing though she couldn’t keep her two sons from fighting. Dallas Einspahr who had at last found the woman he loved was present in his military uniform. He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His six children were unable to attend the celebration as they had the mumps. LaVon Bienhoff had been appointed President of the Macon Farm Bureau and is enjoying the position as a clerk in the Macon State Bank. He is support- ing his wife and three children very nicely. 14 Hildreth Public Library Mervyn Harms and his “latest gal” had a long drive in order to attend the occasion as he was a butcher in Iowa. He said that the grocery business wasn't bad as he weighed 210 pounds. Lloyd Fruhling had been keeping himself busy as he was the owner of “Fruhling's Tavern in Kansas. He also had some female business in Franklin, Nebraska. Edna Hansen related her experiences on the road to Chicago. She had just returned from a painter’s expedition. Edna had proved to be a very successful career woman. Melvin Jelkin filled the day's gab sessions with his recent tips on soil conservation. He boasted of his corn crop which he said “averaged 120 bushels per acre . His corn brings in enough money to 'raise cane'. Julius Rickels had been re-elected as chief of police of New York City. He gave each of his classmates a ride in his custom built Cadillac. We had to remove our shoes before getting in the car. Neil Nordbrock was late but we were certainly glad to see him. He had been on the air as Commedian over station XXXX. He ran Bob Hope out of business with his dry humor. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the occasion and a reunion was planned for the spring of 1971- We’ll see you then!'.! 15 FIRST ROW: Mary Jane Hansen, Denzil Frerichs, Lawrence Lippatreu, Caroline Adam. All of the students bought their own instruments with the exception of the large instruments such as the basses which were supplemented by the town. Instruction to each section of instruments began in November and continued through the first semester. The band began playing together the second semester and at that time was composed of approximately thirty-five members. The instrumentation is com- posed of all of the basic instruments. A Spring Concert was presented May, 1950. This year the band has been enlarged to forty-five members and several beginners. A pep band was organized to play at the home basketball games and was the first pep band ever to participate in the high school activities. On March 6th the band presented a Concert. This Concert was the first means of obtaining money for the new uniforms which the band hopes to purchase next year. The Hildreth Y-Teen Club was organized in 1931 by Mrs. Thelma James Newton. For the past few years the council has become very active in aiding the girls. The council has formed a local Y.W.C.A. Last year the girls held a Founder’s day program with Mrs. Newton as guest speaker. The verse choir presented several selections. Last summer three girls attended camp Merrill at Fullerton. This fall the club attended the district conference in Kearney where they had charge of the Worship service. Later Mrs. Carlson from Loomis and Mrs. Nelson from Holdrege con- ducted two interesting meetings at Hildreth. Throughout the past year the girls have expanded their financial budget by bake sales, magazine sales, and basket- ball lunch sales. An interesting feature has been added by giving at Christmas a mystic candle to the Senior girl who was secretly voted by the club as one deserving of it. Edna Hansen received this candle. This year the Y-Teens are joining the 125th club. For the past eight years Verna Freeman has been faculty advisor. 29 30 Pictured in - g . rev to us Back Row: Left to Right: Mxs Jordan, Music Director Larry Westerbuhr Dallas Einspahr Melvin Jelkin Denzel Frericks Second Row: Left to Right: Leland Jelden Donnie Hemje Dale Loschen Merlin Rocker Lee Fritson Larry Schwartz First Row: Left to Right: Brian Halbert Leon Johnson Gerald Westerbuhr Lawrence Lippstreu Julius Rickels Gerald Loschen Third Row: Left to Right: Duaine Osterbuhr Roger Quadhamer Wayne Evers Leon Johnson Leland Jelden Lila Casper Susan Dennis Rosalie Keiser Larry Schwartz Second Row: Left to Right: Barbara Wilken Brenda Bowker Luyre Fruhling Joan Jelkin Deanna Dennis Wayne Casper Maxine Casper Wanda Frericks Eunice Adam Myrna Warnken PPand Back Row: Left to Right: Kathy Glenn Wanda Frericks Norma Lea Warnken Gerald Westerbuhr Julius Rickels Fourth Row: Left to Right: Miss Jordan, Band Director Lyle Casper Roger Warnken Ronnie Kruse Donnie Kruse Paul Harms Rodney Hinricks Dick Fruest First Row: Left to Right: Dean Jelden Val Jean Quadhamer Joan Casper Evon Wittfoth Larry Casper Lyle Casper Arlyn Fuerst Carol Jean Frecks Marjorie Anderson Sharon Glenn Back Row: Left to Right: Miss Jordan, Music Director, Evon Wittfoth, Myrna Warnken, Marjorie Anderson, Karen Casper, Eunice Adam, Caroline Adam, Mary Lou Duis.
