Hildebran took them all under the coaching of Bill Eanes. Eight foes fell before Coach Eanes and his football team. Backed by some of the most rugged line play we have seen in many a year, the fleet backs broke into the open and went all the way for many a touchdown. With Bill S. Childers quarterbacking and doing an excellent job it is no wonder Jim Wilson, with his bull-like rushes thro ugh the line, carrying would-be tacklers with him, made a name for himself which will long be remembered around Hildebran and vicinity . Vernon Stephens, taking the ball on a hand-off and refusing to be trapped, rushing for many of those precious yards, caused the stands to erupt into cheers on many occasions. With ends, Art Whisnant and Tony Lynn, crossing up the defense and taking those long passes and galloping all the way, the crowds were often left limp in their seats. All of this was made possible by a line that really hus tied all season long. Lanny Baker, Wayne Hicks, Dwight Tucker, Bob Linds ay , Harril Lail, to mention a few of them, just would not be taken o ut on a play and, on defense, were in the opposing team's backfield more than the opposition itself was. Boys playing their last game for the Blue and White were Bill S. Childers, Art Whisnant, Jim Wilson, Tony Lynn, .Toe Keller, Jim Townsend, Tommy Wilson. The Hildebran Royalettes won 8 games and lost l0 against this rugged competition. The offensive team was composed of girls who lacked experience, although they fought hard against the experienced guards of the other teams. The defensive team was composed of small girls. This made it impossible for them to play a zone de fens e and make it work. Therefore they used a man-to-man defense, which caused many of the fouls that were committed by the guards Coach Eanes will lose four players by gradua tion, but he has many good prospects with which to fill these positions. Next year the Royal e tte s are looking forward to a successful season. He had one 6' 4 boy who is every Coach's dream, Art Whisnant. Art averaged 25 points per game and was the leading scorer in the conference. Jim Wilson and B obby Lind s ay helped Art control the backboards, while Tony Lynn and Vernon Stephens proved to be the defensive stars. Having lost only two non-conference games, the boys won top honors in the conference. The team traveled to Charlotte to play Harding High and there received their fir st defeat. The second was in the Burke C o unty tournament. It was a rough game down to the finish with Glen Alpine coming out on top. This was a tough game for the Royals to lo se because it meant the loss of the tournament title. With six boys graduating this ye ar Coach Ruggles will have a tough season next year. But he will have two starters returning, Vernon Stephens and Bobby Lindsayg also some good pro- spects are coming on to fill the other positions for next year.
