NVe are here to tell you the story of the 1954 voyage of the H.H.S Tower. Graduation will come and we will leave dear old H.H.S. to take up larger tasks. We will have pleasant memories ot the lriendships made and the incidents occurring while aboard the Tower. More sober memories will keep ns aware of our re- sponsibilities to those who gave so much that we might make this voyage in learning. This hook is intended to record something of how we lived, what we saw. and what we did. 2 DEDICATION We, the Senior Class, dedicate this, our 1954 TOWER, to Mn. MELVIN R RUGGLES, who for the past six years has willingly given his time to the ad vancement of the school and its many activities. Because of his understanding, interest, hard work, and unselfishness we will always remember his as our lasting friend. 3 M 1 Z I X Zf Af V fy ff Z , f rf ,X ff ' M ,J X fi! M' WW? So went the nota- tion in the Captain's Log. But somewhere out in the eye of the storm lay a mystic isle, home of the sirens. It was upon these shores the two were toseed. After several weak seasons, the girls' team has made a successful comeback in Burke County competition. Under the leadership of their new coach, W. Z. Schreck, they have ironed out many of their troublesome difficulties. There has been a complete change in both the offensive and defensive parts of the team. On the offense the girls have shown their ability in learning patterns and actually working them in their games. With Ramona Burns acting as the center, and Rose Ann Barringer and Mary Ann Foster as forwards, the offsense showed new ability in hitting from both inside and out. The guards started in September to learn and work a zone defense. It has proved to be very effective in holding down the opposition. To supplement this new defense, the guards, led by Ruby Brittain, Scottie Lynn, and Carol Coffee, have also learned to work effectively a tight man-to-man defense. With two forms of defense, the guards have shown marked improvement. To show their enthusiasm for basketball, the girls have been willing to give up their extra time on Saturdays to practice. At these daily practices, Coach Schreck drilled the team in the fundamentals of ball handling and in teamwork. New leadership and new interest and ability have given our girls a spirited team which all can be proud of. With only one senior leaving the team, Scottie Lynn, the girls have a bright future in line for them. Reserve strength has been a weakness this year, but with added experience, Coach Schreck's bench strength should meet the need. So here's to luck to Mr. Schreck and the basketball girls in years to come. 66 fam XYXX xx TGP nufv xWOMN xe N5- WXXX wax XXQQQQ' X Y G KWH was. 0 Q94-fx WXVD 1 nut. dull 'mg dmc, 'Y c ouuv ggbw. fog! 1 wx. fy been - . M. v , Q K x WHAT IT WAS, WAS FOOTBALL The Royals started their 1953 season in a non-conference game with Troutman, winning by a score of 60 to 8. The second game of the season was postponed from Friday until Monday of the next week because of heavy rains. This game was taken from the Royals by Tri-High, with a score of 26 to 6. The Royals, pepped up after their loss, came through the third game, which was a non-conference game with Harmony, by a score of 44 to 12. The Royals then took a hard fought battle from Salem. score-31 to 6. Cliffside came to meet the Royals, but they were de- feated by the hard fighting crew from Hilderbran by a score of 48 to 18. After their fourth win the Royals seemed to be steamed up more than ever. The next two games were easy wins for the Royals. The Drexel Wolverines came to meet the Royals at Hildebran with victory in their eyes, but they were discouraged by our hard fighting team. An inspired Royal team traveled to Scotts with a win necessary to clinch the title. A loss could have thrown the conference into a three way deadlock, but the dressing room oration of Coach Ruggles lit the torch of victory and proclaimed us conference champions for the second consecutive year. One of the greatest hi-lights came after the season was over, when two of Hildebran's players, Bobby Watts and Leon Ledford, were elected to the All-Con- ference first team, while Bud Martin, Co-Captain and Center for the Royals, was given a place on the second team. They defeated St. Stephens at Hildebran by a score of 44-43 for the first game of the season, with Senior Guard Robert Bliss tallying 19 for the Royals. The second game of the season took Hildebran to Valdese where they defeated the Valdese team by a score of 50-43. Cleveland High came to meet Hildebran's big 5, but went back defeated by a score of 72-60. The fourth game brought Lenior to Hildebran. Lenoir went into a double overtime and defeated the Royals by a score of 53-51. The Royals then went to meet Cleveland at Cleveland and again defeated them by a score of 51-48 for our fifth game. The Royals then traveled to St. Stephens but this time were defeated by a score of 63-43. Then came our first conference game for which the Royals seemed to be steamed up after their second defeat. These two defeats didn't matter too much because they were both non- conference. Oak Hill came to meet the Royals at Hildebran but were defeated by a score of 57-35. Again the Royals' schedule took them to Valdese for the eighth game of the season. This game was a non-conference one, with the Royals' big 6' 4 Senior Center Bud Martin tallying 22 points to help the Royals win by a score of 45-42. The ninth game of the season brought Drexel to Hildebran and they went back defeated by a score of 56-43 with Martin again tallying the largest number of points for the Royals. The N.C.S.D. team came to meet the Royals and found that they were just a little too tough. The Royals defeated them by a score of 63-53. The 'eleventh game, which was scheduled with George Hildebran, was postponed because of weather conditions. The Royals took it easy for the next 2 games. For their 12th game they defeated Glenn Alpine by a score of 58-46. They rolled over Salem by a score of 57-49 with Bliss again tallying the largest number of points. The Royals' fifteenth game was a scheduled non-conference bout with Kings Creek, which was played at Hildebran. The Royals won by a score of 56-45. The Royals then traveled to Drexel to defeat them for the second time this season by a score of 57-42. Robert Bliss, so far, has the highest average of points per game. 73 Nl E ,lf f N f ik My-' I mfiaaew . Q 1 mpg, XNM 1 film? Umar'- FRY? 21 L26 airs .
