James m. schureman ask any student walking down the hall who James m. schureman is, and he ' ll probably tell you an english teacher, an english teacher! how could he be ex- pected to know that mr. schureman has an m.ed. and a b.a. in journalism from rutgers university, or that he was a ghost writer for students and faculty at the university of missouri? would the ordinary student know that since 1957 mr. schureman has been teaching at hightstown, and before that wrote free- lance for various magazines? would one suspect that this mild-mannered man saw action in world war II as an enlisted man in china, burma, and India, finish- ing as a staff-sergeant? but the list does not end here. reporter for the kansas city star and the new Orleans item, editor of a ceramic trade magazine in newark, following a term in advertising, designer of the or- iginal spencer gift catalogue, recipient of the lion ' s club award for distinguished service, author of a book on the history of missouri. didn ' t know all this, did you? if he ' s not directing plays, (for which he is well qualified), then he ' s out sailing the bounding blue, possibly he ' s moseying around in ole miss — faulkner country, you ' ve never heard of it? that ' s because you lack the tremendous literary background this man has. here is a guy who ' s not afraid of having a little knowledge. a quiet sort, he ' s one of the best teachers a student could hope to come by. he takes an interest in what ' s going on, having headed the yearbook produc- tion for ten years, ten years, a long time for a man to devote to something, a great job by a tremendous person, yet ask mr. schureman what he does, and he ' ll modestly tell you, i teach english. richey ' s regulars chip off the old block white badge of courage engine, engine no. 9 first student protest? thinkin ' lincoln bang! logs burn t ' was the day before homecoming, when all through the gym, not a player wasn ' t cheering, not even coach m. the lumber was stacked by the boys with care, with plans for a bonfire that soon would be there. the fans were nestled all snug in the stands, with visions of winning, and songs by the band.
