Bechtold-Middleton Reign Hcrnecceing festivities started Thursday evening with the crowning of the King and Queen, Janes Middleton and Noretta Bechtold, at the auditorivsn program. Later a pep rally was held and the annual snake dance wound-up” in the intersection of Main Street. The royalty candidates were: Noretta Bechtold, Donna Jean Baloun, Catherine Pellicotte, Ronald Pekarek, Jim Middleton, and Michael Me Dermott. The Pirate Day Marshall was Janes Palon. On Friday a beautiful parade was held using the theme of States on Parade. The winners in each division were as follows: Division I - Seniors, Division II - grade 3 Division III Brarhall School, and Division IV - History Department. Rural school participants were treated to a free movie at the local theatre The feature highlight of the 1957-58 Pirate Day was the defeat of the Gettysburg Battlers by the Highmore Pirates to bring sweet success to the occasion. The season was started by a loss to Chamberlain a non-conference team. The homecoming game was won against Gettysburg. This was also the first win of the season. For the first time in 22 years the Pirates beat Miller on the Rustlers hone field. The highest score of the season was against Eureka, U7-0. This game was played in 20 degree weather. The last game was lost to Mobridge, the conference champs by a score of 20-0, on a flooded gridiron. Football THE B SQUAD MEMBERS ARE: Seated; Edward Hague, Dean Cline, Charles O'Rourke, Leo Beranek, Leo Huber, John Hadom, Lysle Lusk, and Kenny Huber. Kneeling; Jerald Garrigan, Donald Durfee, James Gunderson, Ton Melboum, Dean Curtis, Darwin Sampson, Larry Tompkins, Terry McDermott, and Wallace Underhill. Standing; Coach H. W. All-State Fullback Jim Palon, who was this Year's high scorer including five touchdowns against Eureka, was named to the all-state foot- ball team which is sponsored by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. With five lettermen returning tc the nev cage coach, Mr. William Adney, a season of four- teen losses and two wins summarizes the 1958 basketball season for Highmore High School's Pirates. Jim Palon, Irvel Morford, Jia Middleton, Dick Weber, and Ron Pekarek were the re- turning letteraen; all were seniors. In Central Conference standings, Highmore defeated Hiller, the only conference loser to the Pirates. Highmore used their B's to succiadb Ree Height in the opening rounds of the 1958 District 16 contest. In semi-final play, the Pirates lost to incumbent Wolsey in an over-time period. Wolsey went on to get the championship trophy and a berth in Region Four. In the last game of the season and the last game for the Pirates of the year's tournament, St. Lawrence proved too powerful and took a position as third place winners. Good Prospects for the Future The Pirate B s ade up for the A’s deficit in an exceptionally good season. They played 15 gases, winning 12 of them. bklp Cline, Jin Cisler, and Gary Erlandson were the high-point getters for their crew. Erlandson, incidentally, plyed 63 quarters for the A's in their gases. A letter winners were Sharp, Lusk, Melboum, Erlandson, Taylor, Cisler, and Cline. This tea , which holds good prospects for next year, averaged 36.7 points per gane over their oppentents who had 25.6. Filler Dick LaFortune Hurdler Dick Weber Nine Qualify For State Meet Highmore fielded one of their best track squad in years. Led by Dick ’Weber, who is the new conference record holder in the high hurdles who won three firsts in the Region IV Meet. Discus Carl Durfee The relay teams,consisting of six boys,all qualified for the State Meet. Dick LaFortune and Carl Durfee qualified for the State Meet in the Mile Run and Discus, respectively. Highmore received 5 points in the State Meet on the strength of Weber’s 3rd in the high and Ltn in the low hurdles. Eighteen tracksters won varsity letters. Coach H. W. Solos and small ensembles were held on Wednesday and the large ensembles were held on Thursday. Superior ratings were won by Don Grable, Bass Voice and by the Brass Sextet. The Music Department received 2 superior rat- ings, 10 excellent tatings, and 8 good ratings. Goehring Excellent In District Declam JOAN GOEHRING Oratory Champion Twenty-four students under the super- vision of Mr. William Adney vied for the four local honor in declamation. The local winners were: Donna Jean Baloun Poetry; Catherine Pellicotte, humorous; Joan Goehring, Oratory; and Joan Melboum, Dramatic. The district meeting was held in Ft. Pierre on October U. IXie to illness Joan Melboum, dramatic winner was unable to tend. The regional meeting was held in Mob- ridge on Noveraoer 12, 1958. Joan Goehring district oratory winner competed there. Alright - Be that way I i Present Former Broadway Play Tine Out For Ginger , a three-act comedy was presented by the senior class of Highnore H’gh School, Monday and Tuesday, April 28 and 29 in the Memorial Auditoriun. Tine Out For Ginger centered around Ginger, the Carol's fourteen year-old dauohter who made the scrub football team in the high school after her father, Howard Carol, made a speech in the fctoh school to the effect that -everyone; should be allowed to do what N wants to do. Junior Class Play Mystery and Intrigue On March 10th and 11th, the Jr. Class presented the play Stranger In the Night , under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jungwirth. The plot is developed around a box of stationery which contains the name of an intended murder victim. It takes place in a hotel book and gift shop which is run by two young women who are afraid their name is In the box. With romance and mystery «ixed together the secret is revealed. The Future Homemakers of America Chapter is an organization of hooer.aking students. In this organization there are special goals some of which include the promotions of better family living and the providing of training for each chapter member for participation in home, school, and community activities. To fulfill these objectives, our F.H.A. Chapter has contributed to the Crippled Childrens Home, The Scholarship Fund, and has observed a handicraft demonstration. We have heard qualified guest speakers, entertained mothers and eight grade girls 8t the local meetings. Mrs. Elden Tompkins is the local F.H.A. Chapter Mother. Sociel group activities are part of the program. We were honored this year to be hosts for the Region Seven F.H.A. convention held in March. We also attended the State F.H.A. Convention. The officers this year were Pat Faulstich, Anita Shepherd, Linda Tompkins, Sharon Mehrer, Donna Jean Baloun, Rita Lusk, and Janet Van Balen. Prom-Banquet Seniors To Musidand On Saturday, Kay 3 1958 the Seniors and Faculty were guests of the Junior class at the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The guests were ushered Into Music Land by the six sophomore waiters and waitresses. They were then served a delicious dinner of Mule Train , Pot of Gold , Snow- balls , Tequila , Whole Lot of Shakin Going On , and Cherry Pink and Appleblosscro White . The cool cats at the main bandstand directed the festivities with choice gens of wisdom which helped to make the chow a real gone affair. After the banquet the Juniors and Seniors moved into the Grand March. Dancing to the music of Larry Kampa's Orchestra followed until 1:30. The actual Prom was over at 1:30, then the Juniors, Seniors, and guests embarked on the first all-night prom-party. The entertainment consisted of a movie at the Grand Theatre and dancing to the Juke box. The evening was broken up by drawings for prizes given by the local merchants. The wonderful evening was brought to a close with a pancake breakfast.
