Our Pirate Day Home-coming Festivities began on the evening of September 23, when Willis Klebsch and Sylvia Wcidenbach were crowned Pirate Day King and Queen. Pirate dancers and singers entertained the Royal Party during the coronation festivities. After the coronation a pep meeting was held around a huge bonfire, where members of the faculty and student body gave pep talks, and cheers for a Pirate victory in the football game the next evening. Under the direction of Marshall Willie Cowan, the festive air of coronation was carried on the next day when the annual Pirate Day Parade began at 2 oâclock with thirty floats competing. The evening of September 24 our Pirates defeated the Ft. Pierre Buffalos 19 to 0 to climax the gala week end. With this victory laid before the feet of their king and queen, the Pirate Clan swarmed into the auditorium and celebrated a successful home-coming by dancing to the music of Lynn Dorsey. 25 Marshal: Willi« Cowan Royalty Most Beautiful White Christmas Senior Most Beautiful Stars and Stripes History Most Beautiful t Never See Maggle Alone Grade S First Most Beautiful Ten Little Indians Holabird Classes Subjects Grades Not pictured Second Most Beautiful Old McDonald's Farm Eagle Most Original Man With The Banjo Freshman Most Original Old Rugged Cross Shop Most Original Blacksmith Blues Grade 6 Star Spangled Banner Grade 4 26 Firat Mon Original Prisoner Song Loomii Second Moat Original Old Folk At Home tllinol Grades Moonlight and Roaea Grade 2 South Of The Border Grade J Lady Of Spain Sophomore Little Grata Shack Junior 27 King and Queen Royal Party Football The Highmore Pirates, under the direction of Coach Ferwarda, began the 1954-55 season with 31 boys reporting for practice. Even so, the Pirates, under the direction of Coach Hadorn. scored some notable victories over some of the better known teams in the state. Defeating such teams as Agar, Miller, Pierre, and Wessington Springs the home team showed well balanced power and some good defensive play under the basket. One of the most active departments in H.H.S, is the Music Department which has, under the direction of Miss Bonita Blanchard, again seen a very successful year. The H.H.S. band dressed in the snappy red and gray uniforms, was seen on many occasions--marching, concerts, and furnishing some of the pep at almost all athletic events. The 41 piece Band marched for Pirate Day and attended Hobo Day at S.D.S.C. It played at concerts such as the Christmas Concert and pre-contest concert. It furnish- ed music for some community events and did well at any of these. Another division of the Music Department is the vocal part with Mixed Chorus, consisting of 55; Boys' Glee Club with 29, and Girls' Glee Club with 35 members. Each of these groups dressed in their beautiful gray robes, which were purchased last spring by the P.T.A., did wonderfully well in their many performances. Stemming from these major groups were the small groups --ensembles, trios, sextettes, quartets and solos--both instrumental and vocal. B Band was also going strong this year with 53 members all preparing to be in the A Band and to make the music department strong in future years. A new group was added to the music department --that of the Band Council. Officers were- President, Sharon Faulstich; Vice-President, Bill Ellsworth; Secretary- Treasurer, Shirley Lusk; Librarian, Mary Jo Hardesty; and the ten student assistants who gave lessons to music beginners. Highmore High School was well represented at the Music Contest in Aberdeen, April 14th and 15th, and received many honors. Miss Blanchard and the music de- partment are to be congratulated for their splendid performances during the past year. 39 Brass Ensemble Don Sharp, Bill Ellsworth, Orville Charlton, Kathie Tippens, Myra Underhill, Ruth Hardesty âBâ Band ini ROW- Standing: M. To begin the season many of the members attended a Discussion Meeting in Huron on January 22. The purpose of this was to give the new debators a clearer view of what debate was and to give the experienced debators new ideas for it. The 12th of February a group attended the debate tournament in Aberdeen, which was nondccisional. The 26th of February Highmore was host to Murdo, Winner, and Gregory for several debates, which were decisional. The local debate tournament was won by Winner with six wins and no losses. All of these debates were in preparation for the debate tourneys sponsored by the South Dakota High School Speech Association, which were held later in the year.
