Cooks and custodians serve in the background For most of the students at Highline, lunchtime begins when the lunch bell rings. For the cooking staff, however, preparation for lunchtime begins at approximately eight o'clock every weekday morning. Whetting the appetites of 1300 students is not a simple task, and hours of plan- ning and assembly are devoted to each meal. Although she had been ill and unable to serve High- line for the most part of the year, Cook Manager Mahala McKinnis deserves a special recognition for her part on the staff. The other members include Head Cook Eleanor Thompson, and staff cooks Mary Ellis, Eunice Boardman, Myrtle West, Phyllis Dettler, and Sally Rendon. An extremely important part of the makeup of High- line is the custodial staff. Head custodian Fred Daiberl and each of the other janitors have every day's work cut out for them. Before School, during each class, after school, and even in the evenings, these people can be found diligently at work to keep Highline an example of cleanliness, a standard not always foremost in the minds of the students. ff, nf 6 4. .31 i Home-ec: experience for the future Mrs. Colleen Castner, in charge of the sewing depart- ment, and Mrs. Virginia Pleasants, in charge ofthe cook- ing department, have designed a home-economics pro- gram that is valuable and rewarding to all who participate in it. One of the newest home-economic courses offered is one called Home and Family Life. This course teaches students the basics in home management and child de- velopment. This year a kindergarten class was taught at Highline and several of the home-ec students took part in this program. The students enjoyed working with the chil- dren, who gave the students experience and added color to Highline's atmosphere.
