Their courageous and self-sacrificing ef- forts to control Highline's teeming halls proved them worthy of their positions. Pep was their name, enthusiasm was their asset and school spirit was Their goal. f . K Pep Club members contributed more than their share in school spirit. The girls worked on commit- tees which publicized games, supplied our teams with after-game refreshments and added originality to Highline's assemblies. Each game day they wore purple outfits that demonstrated support and added color to the school scene. Once again Pep Club had a high membership of over 175 active participants. Highline's traditional two-day Homecoming, October il and 12, centered around the theme, Carousel. As always, Pep Club did its part in adding to the success of the school year. 0 o Pep Club Officers ' Mrs. Molly Bueschke, adviser, Bon- S me West, president, Ann Lally, vice-president, Sue Story, secretary-treasurer, Mr. Lou Tice, adviser. me ' ..,. School spirit was aided by the newly formed Hep Club. While Pep Club reaches primarily girls, Hep Club succeeded in organizing the boys. By wearing sweatshirts with the traditional mark of the pirates, skull and crossbones, Hep members demonstrated their interest in athletic activities. Under the direc- tion of Mr. Glen Hudson, adviser, and Brent Collette, president, Hep Club rechanneled the enthusiasm of the Highline boys. Concluding its first year Hep Club showed that under competent leadership it will have continued progress. We Can Do Anything The Boys' Club, under the supervision of Mr. Lowell Wig- gins, got off to a rather slow star but soon picked up mo- mentum. President Monty Edwards, and his cabinet worked hard to make Boys' Club an up and coming organization. By getting started in so many directions, they were accused of interfering with other clubs. This was by no means true, for their ideas were entirely their own, and not originated by any other club. The Boys' Club car push was one of their most unique and exciting exhibitions. Another project they com- pleted was the reinstatement of the student Traffic Court. They also published a second edition of the student direct- ory. However, due to a lack of sufficient talent, this had not been possible. With the brilliant and promising collection of students available, a musical was once again feasible. And so it was that South Pacific came to Highline's stage. This Rodgers and Hammerstein's play was produced by Mr. William Moeller, and the unusually large cast was under the supervision of Mrs. Virginia Sletner and Mr. Glenn Haggen. Heading the cast were Betty Weiks, Scott McDade,Jim Coccia, Phyllis Johnson, and Joan Gregg. This humorous, yet tragic, love story is set on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. Amid the antics ofthe characters the difficulties and hardships of inter-racial relations were witnessed. The energy and experience of all involved made South Pacific one of the highlights ofthe year. ,sm Seafood anyone? Bloody Mary, Liat, and Cable in Happy Talk.' But that's not where we are. Words of Pen and Tongue With the help and advice of Mrs. Kaitis, the creative writing class once again successfully published the Pirates' Pen. Sold to the student body every spring, this booklet is a collection of original stories, poems, and art work submitted to the Pen's staff by students. As in the past, the efforts put forth produced a true representation of the literary and artistic talent at Highline. Debate Club represented the power of the spoken word for Highline. Under the direction of Mr. Cosman, the debaters traveled to other high schools and colleges for their oral competition. At the Pacific Lutheran University Student Congress Brent Collette was awarded first place. The N.F.L. tournament held in Portland, Oregon, afforded a suitable climax to a successful year. Highline's unsung heroes of the year were the members of the stage crew. This group of boys, headed by Mr. William Moeller, made possible such school productions as the Homecoming show and the school play. Few people realize the importance and necessity of the crew's work. Not only do they assist with school functions, but also with activities put on outside of school. Without their diligent efforts, the suc- cess of many assemblies and school performances would not have been possible. Stage Crew and Ushers Club Greeting people, taking tickets, handling programs and giving direc- tions during football-basketball season, school assemblies, and plays were the duties of the Ushers Club. With the corn- pletion of the new stadium, the help of the Ushers was more noticable and ap- preciated than ever. Bonnie Glenn, head usher, was representative of this group of girls on the Girls' Club Cabinet. Unwillingly, be- cause he is engaged to a very wealthy and beautiful snob, Helen Chandler. The characters move from one mirth-provoking difficulty to another. Upon David's loss of Helen and his Uncle George's financial support, the play concludes with David and Penelope happily sing- ing their way off to the church. A ....with a bang! The leads were: Scott McDade as David, Betty Weiks as Penelope: and Chris Calkins as Wilkenson, a very English butler. Other members of the cast in- cluded Bob Bramel as Detective Sergeant Pidgeon, Beth Ann Horsley as Helen, Tom Dawson as Henry Shawn, Chris McMurdo as Lady Warren, and Ken Beck- er as Sir George Martin. We gave special acknowledgement to Mrs. Vir- ginia Sletner, directory Miss Anita Campbell, assistant director, Joanne Duffy, student directory and all others who helped to make this play a success. These boys spent many hours practicing in order to repeat the ex- cellent performance that Highline has shown in the past six seasons. The Golf team was led by three seniors and one prom- ising iunior. These were Steve Cole, Hurley DeRoin, Jim Trow- bridge and George Linville. Because of such a fine golf team this year, possibly Golf won't be considered such a minor sport. This was the frustrating story Highline's baseball 5 team met during the first half of their f J schedule. Two of the Pirates' first three league games were either canceled or stopped because of the wet, windy weather synonymous with spring in Seattle. At press time the Bucs had completed only three league games. They had topped Tyee and Evergreen, while losing to Ren- ton. The major part of their schedule, along with the two make-up games, still faced them. The Pirates appeared to be improv- ing with each outing and should again place high in the league standings. g W-UIQ., 0 Dickinson displays his hitting form.
