One of the organi'zation's biggest projects for the year, the interschool visitation program tor Border Cities League schools, took place crt Highland Park when the school was host to dele- gations from schools in the area around Detroit. The delegates discussed problems common to all of the schools, and talked about athletic plans for next year. The Student Association was busy in other fields and accomplished a great deal for the Student Policy Makers good of the school. One of these accomplish- ments was the new juke-box, purchased for use in the student lunch room. The group sponsors and supervises class elections, and has charge of the various charity drives. The movies, shown to students during lunch hours, is another pro- ject. Plans underway for next year include a homecoming program for alumni and a huge pep rally. But the Civic League has continued in many worthy projects by itself, in addition to its new responsibilities. The most successful of these projects was the All-School party, first held last fall, and which will become an annual activity. A dance, held this spring, was an additional part of the group's recreational program. One of the most important of the Civic League's many activities is the work done by the Sanitation and Safety Committee, which has accomplished much to improve the condition of the school buildings. The general aims of the organization are to promote safety, help keep the school clean, and sponsor welfare and recreational programs. The sponsor of the Civic League is Miss Flor- ence Pendell. Gentlemen of the Press When the Spectator staff members met forthe first time in September, little did they visualize the year ahead of them. With the job of putting out an issue every other week looming before them, the staff, under the direction of Cynthia Stafford, editor-in-chief, did their best to produce a top-notch publication. Editors and faculty ad- viser, Mrs. Mary Harlan, spent the Tuesday night before publication at the Highland Parker Putting the Spec to bed, and enjoying every minute of it. In October the staff attended the annual High School Iournalism Conference at Michigan State College. Spec headlines in November and t 1' , , g.M.,,.,, December told of football season, the opening of the basketball season, the fall play, and elections, While in Ianuary banners on the Carnival and graduation heralded these events. February brought the Spec a Freedom Foun- dations Editorial award-a gold plaque-for Sarah Leuedders', last year's editor-in-chief, editorial Spec Speaks-on Easterf' Represent- ing the Spectator, Cynthia and Mrs. Harlan flew to Valley Forge, Pa., for the presentation ceremonies. March found the staff busily putting out the issues concerning basketball finals, April saw Don Lyndon, third page editor, off to Europe, and May found graduating seniors with the Washington trip and the University of Michigan Iournalism Conference foremost in their minds. Iune came all too soon, and as a climax to the year's activities, members of the Spec and Polar Bear staffs held their annual Publications Banquet. Graduating seniors were honored, editors for the coming year were announced, and new members were received into the Ad- dison and Steele chapter of H.P.'s Quill and Scroll, National Iournalism Honorary. After sending the book to the printer, the staff turned to the job of selling yearbooks to the students. The two sales drives made the Polar Bear a financial success, and much credit goes to the advertising manager, Pat Anderson, who did a splendid job. G The fall play, Our Town differed from most H.P. productions in that the only major props used were two tables and two ladders. The re- mainder of the setting was left to the spectator's imagination. The scene at the left shows Caro- lyn Parker portraying the part ot Emily in the scene directly after Emily's death. Iane Hamil- ton portrayed the same role on the following nignt. Our Town, the fifth play directed by Mrs. Gwen Young since her arrival as Highland Park's Dramatics Coach, was, in Mrs. Young's opinion, a production of real artistic achieve- ment. The orchestra participates in a number of school activities, and has an annual concert each fall. The concert orchestra played in programs for the grade schools, and a group from the orchestra provided the musical background for the opera, the Mikado Student soloists in the group are Richard Eshkanian and Ianet Ryan. Director of the orchestra is Mr. Dacho Dachoff. The high school band, directed by Mr. Iohn Blanock, held its annual band concert in March and in addition to playing in many programs out of the school, including the Thanksgiving Day parade, the group played at all High- land Park football games in the fall. The students in the band participate in the group's camping trips, and also have a chance to eam music scolarships, established by the students, and financed by the famous Tag Day and other contributions. - Engllsh Singers FIRST ROW: N. First of all, the trip is the result of the combined work of every student. For the first time the seniors have a chance to get to know many more of their classmates as they work together side by side. Of course, the sight of the majestic buildings of the capital city is important: Trippers view the Washing- ton Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon, the Capitol, and other historic sights. In truth, at Highland Park, the Washington trip is one of the high points of the entire four years in the school, and is looked forward to with ever increasing anticipation -as the time for the trip approachesg It is the result of careful planning on the part of the faculty, and the work of the students themselves. Small wonder it is so long remembered! The big moment arrives at last . . . heels replace saddle shoes, suits replace jeans, and seniors are off to Washington. They were also among those groups chosen from vari- ous high schools throughout the city to twirl for the Detroit Lion's games at Briggs Stadium. The Reserve Officer Training Corps, a school-sponsored pro- ject in Highland Park, was es- tablished to give students who were interested in military pro- grams training which would be valuable to them in future mili- tary work. The chief aim of the group is to instill ideals of proper mili- tary knowledge and attitude in high school students. Reserve Officer Training Corps 1 Competitive exams are given to applicants to determine fit- ness and rank in the program. The examinations are both written and oral, and indicate aptitude to military life, and ab- ility to serve under the program. Promotions are given accord- ing to the merits and abilities of the students. The ROTC was sponsored by Mr. Richard Berryman for the- first semester and by Mr. Leon- ard Demak for the remainder of the year. The ROTC program consists mainly of marching drills, and instruction in proper military terms of command. Members are also given prac- tice inthe handling of weapons, as shown in the photographs. The spirit of the group pro- motes co-operation and in- creases the knowledge of the members, making participation in the ROTC activities good training for the future. I L4 YS 7 1952 Class A State Champions The Red Head and his boys walked off with the big trophy this season. After sweeping through an 'unbeaten 14-game regular season, and taking a second straight Border Cities League crown at the same time, Coach lim Wink and his crew of basket- eers started on their long and rough tournament trail. Some observers thought that the top-seeded Parker cagers would fold under the great tourna- ment pressure which was to follow, but the Red Head and his court specialists knew a little different. Royal Oak and Hazel Park were the first to feel the Highland Park tournament punch - the same punch that opponents got all season long. Then came a previously unbeaten Fern- dale team, which the Glendale team blasted, 58-26. The last payment on the Highland Park ticket to Lansing was made on March 19, as the Polar Bears won their quarterfinal test, 48- 34, from a stubborn East Detroit outfit. It was on to Lansing now, for the second season in succession. And this time the Red Head and his boys weren't going to bring back the runner-up trophy. The Parkers met a tall, sharp-shooting Hol- land team i.n the semi-finals. The 9,000 people who witnessed this game called it the greatest comeback in the 27-year history of the tourna- ment, as the Polar Bears, 11 points behind with 2:34 remaining in the game, stormed back to knot the score at 80-all and win 65-62 in an overtime thriller. The following night, the same group of fight- ing lads slowed down fast-breaking Saginaw Arthur Hill to walk away with a 43-42 victory plus their first state Class A cage crown. This was the first time any suburban school had captured a state basketball championship. In addition to a perfect 20-game season, tl:1e Parkers set a few other marks during the cam- paign. ' The team scoring record of 65 points was broken as Highland Park chalked up 66 mark- ers against Royal Oak, and the same total later against Hazel Park. The old individual scoring mark was also erased as 6-foot 4-inch captain and center Dave Parks threw in 38 points against Fordson on February 22. At season's end, Parks was named to numerous all-state teams in Michigan. The last time a Parker cager received first-team re- cognition was in 1929. Ioe Carlson, Dave Parks, George Lee, Charles Duncan, George Duncan, Bernard Iones, Iames Engram, Don Anderson, Don Lisle, Ierry Griffin, Bob Birk, and Coach Iames Wink had done a thorough job of rewriting a few pages of High- land Park athletic history. The Red Head and his team will be remem- bered for a long, long time. ? kix ' ilCFfZ TIL- wig IK iii! Hiul' Baseball Season Opens . . Students in the class, which is directed by Miss Marjory Pieper, are encour- aged to create movements as they listen to types of re- ligious, classical, or popular music. This type of dance is a living, growing, and changing dance fonn, which gives the students poise and builds co-ordination. The girls in the picture below are expressing their feelings as they listen to records during one of the class periods. One of the class's extra activities has been its participa- tion in the Christmas Pageant. 90 En Garde! Especially when she had her headset on- all six pounds six ounces of it. That 1880 headset, though, was a good piece of equipment-the best of its day. But with its box-like transmitter and leather harness, it couldn't, by any stretch of the imagination, be called comfortable. Today, of course, it's a diHerent story. The telephone operator now wears a streamlined headset that weighs only nine ounces-93 ounces less than the 1880 model. It fits her like a new spring bonnet and makes her job as the uVoice with a Smilen easier than ever before. And speaking of jobs, if you're graduating this year, and are looking for an interesting, important job, Michigan Bell may have one for you.
