Here's Mrs. Mur- phy's geometry class . . . cmd just look at those conscientious people studying in the library! Moving on we catch a glimpse of Miss Rish and some of her very enthusiastic typists. Wonder if Mr. Moles would mind if we sat in on his sociology closs for a few minutes? Classes such as this one are really something for you to look forward to for when you become a senior. Oh, there goes the bell and l've got a class. See you tomorrow, and we'll continue our tour around the buildings. Skowneski was named to several All-Star Teams, and was chosen the most valuable player in the Border Cities League. The football team of 1950 looked pretty good before the season started, and when the Bears tied the first game and won the second, everyone felt that they were on their way. But the victory bubble burst when the Bears dropped games to Hamtramck, Fordson, and Grosse Pointe. The Parkers got back on the victory trail to down Mon- roe, and wound up the season by losing to Catholic Central and Royal Oak. f' .sf ' S 2 H 9 IN Q' I E ohn Adam eG R hadPe T Seman x. u U P- .C o 3 w .. o .. Coming through with five wins and only one loss, with Redford the thorn in their side, the team had a sparkling win-as-they-went spirit. The Paddlers were co-captained by Gay Adams and Norma Morrison, while the iob of managing the squad was Laurel Adler's for the second year in a row. Although years season was a one TGCHTI never lacked the fighting spirit needed to carry them through. Coached by Mary Lou Marsh, the varsity squad was made up of Marlon Ayers, Margaret Wullman, co captains Pat Woltman, Barb Liba, Ida Dumas, Dorothy Wymer, Judy Chadbourne, and Elbez Paulian, who was C5 Z I' U7 P U9 I l'l'l -I W P I' I' Q - 1 p .1 5 1, 00 I Q in 1 1 X A 5 I x Q l I 'ln-f 1 4,5 is fl QQ! if B.C.L. CHAMPIONS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS M.H.S.A.A. 1951A STATE RUNNERS UP Coach Jim Wink's Parker cagers roared to the most successful season ever experienced by a High- land Park team. They won 13 out of 14 games in the regular season to finish on top in the Border Cities League, then fought their way to the regional cham- pionship at Ferndale. In a State quarterfinal game, they defeated powerful Grosse Pointe for the third time in as many games, and thereby earned the chance to go to Lansing to the State semi-finals. Al- though they were expected to lose, they downed Flint Central and the following evening met Kala- mazoo Central which was shooting for its third straight state championship. Although the experts predicted a slaughter for Kazoo, the Parkers kept the issue in doubt until the final buzzer, and gave the Maroon Giants the scare of their lives. Seniors Ray Pogliano and Joe Duby were the nuc- leus of the team after John Adams and Ron Wegert graduated at mid-season. Other new stars who appeared on the Highland Park scene were juniors Dave Parks and Joe Carlson, and freshman George Baby Duncan. g , 4 Q ff' Q , a If ' at !f' I' 3 19 5 'I 41 'H ' 'ii x, JANUARY BOOKCMMUIE 33 4 'fag' 5353:-5' 'la JI! Perhaps it is not always the mental color of know- ing that our team has won, but there can be no denial that between the marching band, cheerleaders, and maiorettes every game is enioyed thoroughly. Our cheerleaders and ma- iorettes this year showed top school spirit. Appearing at every game in full strength, they constantly had winning smiles and pep. The marching band would consistently pace any high school band that it would encounter while the different formations displayed, and music played always added extra en- ioyment to the games. With Don Gault, Highland Park's high stepping drum maior at the helm, the band drew much applause and favorable comment from every spectator. Truly, the 'Foot- ball season would not have been as fully enjoyed without these fine groups of students. -as 1 va H9 S534 Q9 98' S X6 .79 KW 9 . Bennett, president, D. Baum, vice-president, P. Kanterman, secretory, and B. Kanterman, treasurer. This spring the officers are: D. Stevens, president, L. Ward, vice-president, D. Hill, treasurer, M. Andrew, secretary. The club is actively engaged in sponsoring a Navaio Indian school and sent Christmas packages to every child last Christmas. The biggest project is to earn money to help support the school. Club members also had an exchange assembly with Miller High School. The two sponsors, Miss Lillian Taylor and Mr. Harvey Jackson, endeavor to further the theme: That of good relationship to all roces, creeds, and religions. You'll want to meet the students in one of our most active clubs, the Y-Teens, under the sponsorship of Miss Mildred Ulmer. Their goals are to grow in body, spirit, and mind, to grow in friendship with people of all races, nationalities, and religions. The club officers are Donna Sandusky, treasurer, Sue Johnson and Shirley McPherson, co-program chair- men, Sally Gartman, president, Idamae Sullivan, secretary, and Margaret Knapp, vice- president. I D V FUIUR E TEAC HERS One ofthe more informal of the school's clubs, the Ukulele Club, has become very popular since it was started earlier this year. Formed for students having talent in playing the ukulele, these future Godtrey's gather every week and enjoy harmonizing on their own ukes. Under the direction of Mr. James Buckborough, they have pre- sented two musical assemblies which were both thoroughly enioyed by everyone. Many groups of these students now gather outside of school and play tor their own pleasure and enjoyment. The music that you may hear floating out of room 207 is no doubt the Gershwin Club in action. This newly organized club meets every Wednesday, third hour under the spon- sorship of Mr. Walter Conrad. The purpose of the club is to make music listening more enioyable. On the agenda for listening pleasure the club featured selections from opera, musical comedy, iazz, and symphonic music-everything from Bach to Boogie Woogie. Student response was so enthusiastic, that membership was limited to Seniors only. Many Juniors are patiently looking for- ward to their Senior year in order to qualify for member- ship in the Gershwin Club. UKULELE The weekly opportunity of listening to the playing talent of others helps each member of the H. P. Piano Club cor- rect and improve his own technique. Under the direction of Mrs. Helen Wortley, the club has long been very popular among Parker-pianists, and their annual Sole-Nite, pre- sented at the MacGregor Library every spring, is now a treasured tradition. The praises of Robin Seymour, disc- iockey and star attraction of Plotter Paradise, were sung by the Dance committee, headed by Maureen O'Harra and Pete O'Rourke. 7 SODA Cum ru g 1' i , v 20 Further on down the hall was seen the banner inviting all Gullible Travellers to the Auditorium Show. Jim Slear and Grace Cochrane were in charge of this. Following the crowds led you eventually to the Girls' Gym, where Dick Baum and Mary Louise Raytis displayed many and unusual Features. In the Girls' Pool the Aquacade offered variety in entertainment and a chance to sit down. Dashing through the halls, guarded by Jay McKeown's police squad, could be seen Betsy Butler and Pat Richards, Ticket chair- men. The annual fall concert was given on November 8, and everyone agreed that it was a great success. Besides the concert, the orchestra partici- pated again in the Southeastern Band and Orchestra Festival this year. Last year they received a First Division award for the first time. li One of the other activities of the orches- tra is the annual operetta presented every spring through the combined effort of the vocal and instrumental music departments. The orchestra has also participated in various assemblies throughout the school year. President of the orchestra is Ray Pogliano, who is the concert-master. Janet Ryan is the secretary and Celia Leighton is treasurer. Managing the orchestra is a big responsibil- ity and Harry Avesian has done a fine job. Richard Weber and Danny Goodearl share the librarian's responsibilities. 1 - N- l'l Thus year the efforts of the Spectator Staff were durected toward gettung out a champuonshup publucatuon Wuthun few ussues a notuceable profut was shown wuth credut goung to Muss Mary vertusung manager and Angello Zannus busuness manager In October some of the staff members attended the MSC Journalusm Day where the Spectator receuved the John S Knught Yrophy whuch us annually awarded to the most outstandung Muchugan hugh school news paper Later on un the year furst class ratungs were receuved from the Natuonal Scholastuc Press Assocuatuon and the Columbua Scholastuc Press Assocuatuon Sarah Luedders edutorun chuef and the other edutors Duck Pyle Cynthua Staf ford Jum Weber Carolyn Parker and Barbara Muruk were those who worked hardest to make the paper such a suc cess Sarah Duck and Cynthua were furst semester Quull and Scroll members and others who came un later were Duck Jones Carolyn Barbara and Toby Cltrun PECTATOR STAF gif' Luedders Heads Spec Staff' w Page Edutors Appointed Every year the Quull s. scfouu houds Q publuwtuofus lmnquel fo' 'he Spec C tha and Polar Bear staffs Puctured above Phomng f0f YGSEYVGUOHS are yn I Stafford Sec,-etqry Sarah Luedders presudent and Duck PYle I of 7 n ' ' 4 ' - 1 I Q , , A b QW' Ivy' i f, -f ll -f . . . . . . . .
