Members of the Class of ’69 were readily distinguished as those students haphazardly clad in baby blue, severely shrun- ken Prom sweatshirts whenever a show of school spirit was required. However, seniors did gather the strength to sweep into downtown Highland Park on November 11 for the annual Work Day. More energetic seniors, who were sufficiently demented to be carrying five solids, were offered the opportu- nity to officially take one course pass-fail. If seniors did learn anything at all this year, it was undoubtedly their names, addresses, and social security num- bers, the three mysterious universal requirements for college applications, SAT’s, ACT’s, and numerous other infamous institutions. Besides suffering through this mental stress, seni- ors also increased their physical endurance by trying to outrun the faculty on Blue Tuesday. Again, it was the seniors who stirred their old bones to produce Stunts and create a new organization, Student Movement. However, the seniors’ main desire was to graduate, which they did in large numbers. NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS: BACK ROW: Rick Weil, Liz Cheresh, Tina Barr. No more drab study halls or library passes. The South Cafeteria was transformed into junior lounge! October PSAT’s gave juniors their first taste of the super test. When January came, they were at it again, memori- zing the Constitution-for a day. As befitted a pace-setting class, Buzz Book was later than ever, not appearing until second semester. Prom occupied a lot of junior talent and energy, but it was well worth it. Elegant prom-goers tripped the light fantastic in the miraculously transformed cafeteria, romantic as never before. They decided to go “Up, Up, and Away” at Homecoming, and beat Evanston in the final three seconds of play. But, on or off the field, their driving ambitions carried them far. After several exhilarating classroom sessions and finding that the stimulator didn’t get them anywhere, almost everyone felt at home on the range. In speech class the modern sophs learn how to demonstrate, and also how to persuade and convince, should they ever have the opportunity to negotiate. Biology students, enticed by the pro- mises of their freshman health courses, learned about life. With their own dance and a slip of Sweet Sixteens, the Sophs were a vital part of the school. Then, running from the South Cafeteria to E306 and forgetting the combination to your lock and being stampeded in the main staircase and your books going up as you go down and your spiral notebook getting caught in someone’s sweater, and wondering whether it’s Monday’s or Tuesday’s schedule and maybe you should have taken Spanish instead of French and you’re lost in the crowd. THIS is what waited in line for? IN THE BEGINNING . . . Freshmen meet the Intelligentsia Cafeteria style 79 UNDER THE a roller... Attila and his Huns The Darling Dainties During Homecoming Week-end, HPHS students had several opportunities to remind Highland Park residents of their existence as Little Giants-in noise production, at least. On Thursday, the entire business district was disrupted by the whooping hordes of window painters. The sometimes-walking, sometimes-stampeding snake dance paraded through the streets, vocalizing spirit every foot of the way. At the pep rally afterwards, the cheers were the loudest in HPHS history. Unfortunately, we lost the best opportunity to tear up the town when the Giants suffered their only defeat of the season. As a result, there were only a few timid toots on car horns after the game, instead of the full-scale assault on everyone’s eardrums that would have followed a victory. 81 HOMECOMING COURT: Andrea Ivanhoe: Jody Krafsur; Randi Gore: Jody Earhart: Debbie Eppstein; and Queen. Yet his somewhat strange behavior was nothing in comparison to the eccentricities of his two sweet, harmless sisters, played by Judy Ragir and Ann Wcissman. These epitomes of littlc-old-ladyhood, Abby and Martha, were humanely sending lonely old men (twelve to be exact) to their final resting place, a basement-sized Panama Canal. These old gentlemen found that the sweet old ladies made an elderberry wine with quite a kick to it, combining an excellent vintage with an ability to camouflage the potent tastes of strychnine, cyanide and arsenic. What. You re boycotting elderberries.' 84 What a piece of work is a man. All said was that you look like Boris Karloff. didn 't know there hoj yellow fever in the window seat. Remember what happened to Mr. Spinoza can happen to you. 85 STOP THE CLOCK! When Peggy Richland, President of Girls’ Club, called “Time Out for Mom,” 450 chickens marched to their doom, along with dozens of cabbages and heaps of potato chips, to provide 900 mothers and daughters with one of the most delicious banquets ever. The decorations of diaries, toys, and books traced the maturation of the daughters from goo-goo to graduation, and this was also the theme of the banquet. One of the skits recalled the “Boom- Chicka-Boom” high school days of the moms, while a more contemporary reference to personnel forms brought down the house. The senior moms hoofed their way into the hearts of Highland Park with a spirited tap-dance, a socko finish for a bang-up evening. The huddled masses yearning to be free. Dear Diary . . . The senior girls tell it like it is. 86 CITY SLICKERS AND COUNTRY CHICKS Country chicks lured city slickers to the county fair for H.G.A.’s Father Daughter Banquet. After arriving at the North Cafeteria Fairgrounds, Slickers and Chicks together participated in the eating contest, munching rural favorites like fried chicken and apple pie. Rivalry was too fierce, though, because travelling salesmen and farmers' daughters tradition- ally have gotten on rather famously. Midway through the evening, a group of daddies and daughters collaborated on a skit which included a lot of corny humor, because what else can you expect down on the farm? The cultivated farm girls of each class then presented the fair’s main attraction, the song contest. After the juniors were declared the blue ribbon winners, the fair grounds closed for the season. The juniors may have won but the seniors showed them how! 87 STUNTS BOARD, TOP ROW: Steve Fishman, Sue Patterson, Peaches Rcdfield, Jan Michcli, Hal Fischer, Karen Birstein, Jon Roscnblum, Julie Dean, Jim Brinkman. There was no love lost in this year's Student Stunts, “Oh, What A Bite!” Stunts began at the beginning, the Garden of Eden, and covered love up to the computer age. The waltz of the fruits set the mood for the show. The days when knighthood was in flower were recreated by Sir Clutzy, the fearless avenger, and Princess Sweetness, a damsel in distress. However, love did not conquer all—the Mission Improbable Force had to self-destruct. The Senior Girls’ Chorus Line aroused patriotic and other emotions in the audience. A Romeo-like Coach Davis made theater history. Outstanding features were the excellence of Stage Band and the elegance of the costumes. Stunts presented an entertaining and infor- mative (several freshman were seen taking notes) review of love. By the way, what WERE they doing in that car? Four Kisses 88 How dare you call me four eyes! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. OH, WHAT A BITE! 89 90 Mike and Mace found this skit too hard to stomach. There she goes down the hootch. However, this phenomenon was only an indication that Junior Giants Make Big Tracks.” Not to be outdone, sophs and frosh sported blue and white, while sophisticated seniors donned their '69 sweatshirts. Another innovation was the selection of the most spirited teacher. Miss Giffhorn, the winner, was presented with a Spirit Cap.” The runners up, Mr. Land and Miss Ott, were also rewarded. The Little Giants walked away from the Niles game triumphant, and the win was celebrated at the Winter Homecoming dance. THE LAND OF THE LITTLE GIANTS A pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon. 93 HGA IN ACTION The three subclubs of H.G.A. presented contem- porary shows this year. The Penguins waddled into the mysterious field of Superswishins and pooled the aquatic talents of the Loch Ness Monster, witch doctors, shooting stars, and warlocks. Charis pre- sented an Experiment in Dance and for the first time followed Penguin's lead with male dancers, showing that boys are not all wet, but can dance, too. Other innovations were a fluorescent number and interpretations in dance of various emotions. The Gymnastics show, still all female, exhibited the abilities of well-balanced girls. Free exercise and other tumbling routines were unparalleled highlights of the show. 94 HGA INITIATIONS Prospective HGA members disturbed the tradi- tional decorum of the lunchrooms this year with the annual rite of initiation. The girls cavorted through cafeteria aisles doing jumping-jacks and a passe' bunny hop. At the end of the day, all gathered for the solemn processional in the student auditorium to climax the making of an HGA member. Please don't feed the animals! Do the Bunny Hop 95 “We are the music-makers” The silver-throated warblers of the HPHS music department performed in several concerts during the year. In addition to awing the elementary schoolers with their musical finesse, the carolers sang a happy 100th birthday to Highland Park at centennial celebrations. The choruses serenaded the arrival of winter in a special concert and added cheer to the season by caroling in the halls. The band did its bit to bring back Guy Lombardo and Tommy Dorsey. The most exciting musical event was a performance of CARMEN by the combined Highland Park and Deerfield choruses. The leads were provided by the Chicago Lyric Opera. Giving the local songsters a rest, the Children's Choir of Chicago roused the inattentive. CARMEN 96 Practicing for the spring band concert Madrigals sing for the H.P. Centennial Dinner AFS WEEKEND In Chile we make jewelry out of these. To boost international good will and help foreign exchange students miss as much school as possible, HPHS sponsored another A. F. S. weekend. The visiting dignitaries were introduced to the PTA Thursday night and to the student body Friday morning. While Remi observed that he had expected Chicago to be run by gangsters, not cops. Lennart rested his eyes on a Swedish export. During the day, classwork was often abandoned to question visitors on dating, home- work, and other issues of international importance. The group was then ushered to a dinner. Stunts, and an A. F. S. party. On Saturday, the guests and hosts spent two hard hours in the humid climes of the Highland Park High School swimming pool. Music-lovers know that Oklahoma is not merely a state of oil wells and ranches. It is a land where every lovelorn cowboy bursts into song when a cactus reminds him of his lady love. Besides the aforementioned cowboys, Oklahoma is populated by dogics, honey lambs, Persian rug peddlers, and elephants used for measuring corn. Indeed, this year's musical was truly educational. The audience learned of primitive means of transportation (“Surrey With the Fringe on Top”), weather analysis (“Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”), and current events (“Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City”). Ali Hakim personified the Arabian point of view on rugs and marriage. Jud Fry ex- pounded eloquently on the evils of jealousy, and Ado Annie dissected the drawbacks of hyper-acquiescence, a technique familiar to HPHS health graduates. The show ended with every marriageable character firmly hitched. We must assume that this is the happy ending. 99 I'm fist a girl who coin'1 soy no! 100 101 ORGANIZATIONS Mr. Richard Edwards Sponsor Terry Gips President Ira Hirschfield Vice President Jody Earhart Walter Lehman STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD Student Council strove for a dynamic new look this year in an attempt to be more representative of all students. Through the work of Forum, the grape earned a reputation as despicable as the prune, and other notorious fruits. Although “Boycott grapes!” was the rallying cry and favorite bumper sticker of Human Relations Forum, our beloved cafeteria staff was relieved to note that no reference was made to raisins. The members did take time out from their campaign to sponsor discussions and lectures on Japanese concentration camps, the Socialist party activities in the U.S., the participa tion of the Friends’ in American politics, and of course the United Farm Workers’ movement. Carla Steiger, Jan Friedman, Laura Cohen, Carrie Cianchctti. PROJECT 18 Project 18 supporters took to the streets this year, armed not with shaving cream and toilet paper, but with tally sheets. By canvassing for Con-Con, while also polling public opinion in regard to lowering the voting age to 18, the members hoped to inform every Highland Park voter about these two vital issues. The passage of the proposal for an Illinois Constitutional Convention was a major goal for the project, since some of its representatives intend to testify before the Convention, as they did at the Illinois Democratic State Party platform hearings. Spreading the doctrine of a lower voting age, representatives from Project 18 propagandized in many of the Chicago suburban high schools in hopes of making the project a state-wide group. The half-time glamour girls, the majorettes, earned solo performances at basketball games, but Varsity Club used their same old lines to keep the fans off the court between halves. For the more coordinated, sport-minded individuals, H.G.A. also offered the dance club. Charis, the water ballet club. Ill CHESS CLUB Meeting more or less unofficially almost every day that Mr. Asplund stayed after school, Chess Club members continued to wage their lengthy battles of intelligence, foresight, and endurance. Often taking more time to move than the hands of the clock ninth period, the chess players tried to outlast HPHS opponents. In addition, they ventured forth to other high schools to psyche out any chess team fool-hardy enough to challenge them. Although slightly perturbed that no cheer- leaders appeared to spur them on to victory, the Blue and White Chess team was never matched. Richard Lowcnthal (Treas.), Gary Linz (Sec’y), Kerry Flom (Pres.), Peter Thicscn (V.P.). BRIDGE CLUB Bridge Club was the only one of the school’s many clubs in which a member could get away with calling a teacher “a dummy. Every Thursday morning at the unbelievable hour of $ a.m. bridge clubbers gathered in the South Cafeteria to explore the complexities of the Goren and Schenken bridge systems. They also learned the sly art of footsy communica- tion with a partner. Members of the Bridge Club put their long early practice hours to the test by competing in a number of tournaments and by giving a good account of themselves. The word is that by really putting their hearts into the game, they learned to call a spade a spade. For the student interested in playing his cards right, Bridge Club is the place to be. John Levine (V.P.), Dan Engel (Tourn. Dir.), Lance Ellmann (Sec’y - Treas.). Cary Root (Pres.). MATH CLUB Magic squares, Fibonacci theories that involve series of numbers with weird properties. Boolean or computer algebra, and group theory - not to be confused with group therapy - all might bewilder the average math student, but to the calculating members of Math Club, these intricacies of mathe- matical logic were the joys of their existence. Students and teachers took turns presenting many of the little-known algebraic and geometric principles which might otherwise have been left in the diaries of obscure mathematicians. Although very few girls have taken refuge in the club, the members are convinced that there is safety in numbers. 112 Rhonda Ellman (Sec’y ). Brad Walters (V.P.), David Sirotti (Pres.). SCIENCE CLUB Science Club is alive and well and met the first and third Tuesdays of each month in M102a. They would have appreci- ated more females of the species actively participating in their afternoon programs. In the great Copernican tradition, our Science Clubbers perfected a proof which definitely showed the Earth to be the center of the universe. Future plans include a trip to one of the Earth’s four corners to study the sex habits of the tse-tse fly. Actually, Science Club did provide lectures by both students and teachers, movies and slides covering various topics from ecology to spectrophotometry, beta-minus particles to the Hale telescope. Alan Cliausow (Prog. Chmn.), Mr. Hanson (Spons.), Rhonda Ellman (Pres.). GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ RIFLE CLUBS Boys’ Rifle Club and its female counterpoint. Girls’ Rifle Club, offered a small group of enthusiasts the opportunity to sharpen their target shooting skills. They were assisted primari- ly by the United States Post Office. This venerable institution mailed their scores in the postal matches and in return brought them their genuine NRA membership cards. Members eagerly looked forward to Wednesdays this year when boys and girls could shoot together. Modest male members attributed their rising scores to the enthusiasm generated by their armed playmates. Many others derived enjoyment, not only from striving to improve their scores, but also from preparing to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms. The members presented various workshops on pantomime, improvisation, and other facets of acting. They also produced cuttings from such plays as Harvey, Impromptu, and Little Foxes. The initiation of regular meetings resulted in a rise in attendance and member- ship, which was somewhat of a surprise, considering that temperamental actors are not known to be regular about much of anything. STAGE CREW If “All the world’s a stage and the people arc merely players,” the lack of Stage Crew would be quite a problem, for at HPHS they are a vital part of every production. It was Stage Crew that lit up the stage performance after performance, and it was Stage Crew that always brought the curtain down. Although no longer exclusively their trademark, the Stage Crew people still wore those spiffy head-phones while shouting at each other across the auditorium. On the whole, Stage Crew is an organization that knows the ropes. Gil Sapcr, Richard Barris, Scott Axclrood, Jay Bums, Ed Konowitz, Steve Eishman, Chuck Eisner. CREATIVE ARTS CLUB Refusing to be daunted by the conformity inspired by the pink, beige, and turquoise I.B.M. cards, Creative Arts Club encouraged diversity and individuality of all colors. The more juvenile members were rumored to have favored brownish-grey mudpies, but most of them found mature self-expression in white plaster, reddish-brown clay, and multi-colored crayons and paints. They also gained satisfaction from judging Home- coming windows, making Turn-About decorations, and creat- ing scenery for various dramatic productions. 114 BACK ROW: Andy Zucker (Pres.), Lisa Fischer, Toni Easton, Cathy Crane (Trcas.). FRONT ROW: Judy Epstein (V.P.), Robin Huft. LITERARY CLUB Literary Club provided an escape from the standardization of the English curriculum by encouraging creative writing and thinking. Provocative subjects were discussed frequently (al- most obsessively); Hindu sex-life and revolutionary poetry dominated several meetings. The failures of the American education system and the radical education proposals of Paul Goodman and Edgar Fricdcnberg were analyzed by students and teacher. In these meetings, Literary Club tried to dispel its image as a refuge for stodgy intellectuals. The club’s most concrete achievement was Oliphant. a fine arts magazine promoted, edited, and sold by members of the club. This is the only issue on which all of the HPHS debators would be affirmative. As far as this year’s debate topic, the establishment by the U.S. of a system of compulsory service for all citizens, they generally took opposing views, and, upon, occasion, even switched sides. VARSITY SWIMMERS CLING TO UPPER ECHELON The Varsity swimmers, initially termed a lower echelon” team by Coach Don Davis, nevertheless managed a fourth place finish in the Suburban League. Though Highland Park traditionally finishes behind Evanston and New Trier, an exceptionally strong Oak Park team took third. Despite the seniors’ marked improvement this year, the juniors provided most of the winning power. The medley relay of Kurt Keeler, Ed Silverman, Nick Rosa, and Rick Osberg broke the junior record with a time of 1:46.4, only .1 seconds off the varsity record. Silverman got his name on the board again by breaking the junior butterfly record with a time of :59.3, and Keeler established the only varsity record of the year by doing :59.4 in the backstroke. Co-captain Daryl Schocnstadt again strengthened the team, and culminated his fine season of diving by taking tenth in the state meet. The seniors, easily identified by their baby blue jerseys, were given the arduous task of enforcing curfew rules as members of the Board of Controls. More importantly, they provided the necessary depth for the successful dual meet season the team had. 130 “There’s the door. ” SOPH TANKERS “DO THE JOB”; TAKE SECOND Coach Davis’s favorite Saturday pastime this year was rearranging the always fluctuating sophomore record board. Having both talent and depth, the squad has been justifiably acclaimed the best soph swimming team in the high school’s history. They beat Evanston, something that hasn’t happened in eleven years. They also became the first soph team in Highland Park’s twenty-three years of competitive swimming to win second place in the Suburban League. In the newly established Frosh-Soph Invitational, they left the competition far behind. Aided by the juniors, they also won the annual six-team Soph-Junior Relays. They celebrated by pitching Coach Davis, Coach Harris, Coach Ratliff, and sundry innocent bystanders into the pool. The frosh swimmers were heard from. too. They finished a prestigious third in the Suburban League. Jeff Brinkman proved to be the outstanding baby merman by placing second in the Suburban League Meet in the 300 yd. freestyle, breaking the record set just last year by Bruce Ratajczyk. Among the seven victories was one over New Trier East, the first time Highland Park has ever beaten the Indians in wrestling. Luca Poeta, whose 24 2- 1 record led the team, was the only Highland Park wrestler to go downstate this year. Highland Park's J.V. wrestlers extended their unbeaten streak to 32 straight over three years while capturing first place in the Suburban League. Sophomore wrestlers compiled a 5-2 record, finishing third in the league. The freshmen grapplers, like the varsity, finished fourth with a 4-3 record. The team lived up to its billings compiling a 15-9 record for the year. The season started out fast with nine consecutive victories. However, Highland Park ran into a tough Niles West team for their first loss. Of the nine defeats suffered by Highland Park over the season, eight of them came at the hands of teams ranked in the top sixteen in the area. Although the record shows Highland Park strongest in the early season, their best games came in the last contests of the year. In their final home game, the Little Giants came within three points of upsetting the top team in the state. Proviso East. Highland Park enjoyed a three point lead with four and a half minutes left in the game. However, the tough Proviso defense rallied, and the Giant cagers came out on the short end of an exciting 44 41 struggle. In the state tournament. Highland Park started well by upsetting the North Suburban League champions. Libertyville, and downing ‘arch rival’ Deerfield. In the finals of the regional, Highland Park met Waukegan, ranked eighth in the state. Highland Park managed to pull even with Waukegan at the end of the third period but succumbed to the team’s power in the end. Season standouts included sophomore Steve Borenstcin whose ball handling and sharp shooting led Highland Park. Coupled with Steve in the back court was Dave Ori with his deadly outside shooting and tricky moves. Dave Kaye played clutch ball, switching between forward and guard. Art Elliot and Kim Hammerberg proved to be a potent rebounding- scoring threat. And sixth man Bob Wilson pleased the crowds with his fantastic hustle. 134 CAGERS ENJOY BEST SEASON SINCE 1960 VARSITY RECORD TEAM HP Opp. HP Opp. Glenbrook North 72 67 Niles West 54 52 North Chicago 49 47 Deerfield 74 55 Oak Park 68 58 75 67 Morton East 71 61 58 67 Niles East 57 45 72 62 Waukegan 55 67 44 78 Evanston 57 56 67 60 Proviso East 34 55 42 44 New Trier East 60 74 62 64 Niles North Christmas Tournament - Second Place State Tournament Libertyville 65 62 Deerfield 75 53 Waukegan 39 46 135 SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL TOP: Piacenza, Roshto, Travetto, Casey, Isenstein, Bartolai. Feats of heroism were com- monplace, as counselors wrestled with the fearsome computer for long overdue schedule changes. Counselors were always available if you were willing to wait a few weeks. Pupil personnel with ivy in their eyes found guidance to the college of their choice—not necessarily their first choice. The coun- selors coordinated an alaphabet of college tests, from CEEB’s to NMSQT’s. Those who wanted to work after graduation received helpful advice (“Well, Dow Chemical is looking for recruits. ) at the Pupil Personnel Services Center. The Administration, mindful of growing student unrest (even HPHS has its home-grown Student Movement and “underground” press), sought to establish happier lines of communication with the younger generation. This was the year of Dr. Price's Open Line, Friday afternoon question-and- answer sessions in the Senior Lounge, and of the administra- tion's blessing of student faculty committees to develop a new rules structure and a pass-fail system. On the other hand, the Administration was also doing business at the same old stand. Daily notices carried their share of friendly little reminders that snowball throwing and PDA are no-no’s. The stern “It has come to our attention reassured students that administrative antennae were sharply attuned to all the potential sources of trouble within the vast confines of HPHS. Students moving through the hall still needed to clutch one of the multi-colored passes which brighten up an otherwise uneventful school year. Peppermint pink was the most popular color, although it was little in evidence on “Blue Tuesday.” Miss Jane Bond Mr. James Alexander Mr. Abraham Silverman Mrs. Joyce Silverstein College Consultam School Social Worker Special Education 147 ART New York’s Greenwich Village is to the free spirits of America what the HPHS art department is to the local free spirits, especially those who combine their love of freedom with a creative bent. In this remote area, far from the madding main halls, one can find the independent souls deeply absorbed in using paint, chalk, clay, and metal to give shape to their ideas. Every year the art department walks off with a bushelful of honors for student work entered in various competitions. The art depart- ment also makes a major contribution to the rest of the school. This year, for example, it became deeply involved in the humanities program. Those who hold that there is no place for creativity, originality, and personality at HPHS obviously need to get acquainted with the art department. Mr. Thomas CarboI Mrs. Ghita Hardimon Chairman Miss Sandra Groh A little dab’ll do ya. Mr. Jerry Deasy 148 Mrs. Alice Kaplan Mr. Robert Cardiff BUSINESS EDUCATION Mr. Kenneth Jorstad. Chairman Mrs. Betty Freehling The shortest distance to the Executive Washroom is through the Business Education Department. But even if a student plans to go no farther in the business world than to put his feet on a desk, he can always use an understanding of economics, skill in typing, and knowledge of other phases of business. Students seriously interested in a head start in business careers have the opportunity to get on-the-job training through the Distributive Education and Office Occupations programs. A new study in the Department this year was data processing, which is not the same as dating by computer, although card sorters, key-punch machines, and a small calculator are available for an enterprising B.E. scholar who wishes to provide a new service for HPHS students. The keyed-up future captains of industry found artistic relief from their tensions by creating eye-catching bulletin boards outside their headquarters in the M200's. Some business students continue their vocational training in college; others graduate ready to pursue their fortunes. ENGLISH Mr. Jerry Grunska. Chairman Mr. Thomas Mellonig ‘To detail or not to detail?” is not the question for the English student at HPHS. From the moment he enters the doors of freshman English class, where he will learn to see, feel, taste, smell, and hear them, details are his constant, and frequently exasperating, companions through a four-year odyssey in search of writing competence (or so it says in the course descriptions). On this long journey he and details must out-wit and out-fight many an obstacle, all of which arc aided and abetted by the Olympian presence of a myriad of angry Poscidons, armed not with tridents, but with red pencils, grade books, and failure cards. Each has a son, a sadistic one-eyed monster who dashes detail after detail against darkened walls, smashing them mercilessly and leaving our student Odysseus naked, alone, miserable. But he docs not despair. He sails on past unspeakable horrors past paragraphs and themes, past the tangled darkness of symptom-disease, cause-effect, problem-solution, not this-but this. Finally, with the help of the gods and other sundry powers, like counselors and parents, he arrives at golden Ithaca he graduates. Valiantly attempting to communicate in French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and sign language, HPHS students soon developed an affection for “good ole American. Nevertheless, they went to great lengths to master the foreign tongues. Adorned with headsets, the Martian-like languagc-labbers flicked disconnected switches with expertise to listen to Donald Duck spieling off French grammar or Spanish conversation. Identification with the language became complete. Italian students shook their fists at reruns of “the Untouchables, while German students hissed John Wayne in old World War II movies and boycotted “Hogan’s Heroes.” However, many ambitious plans for the year fell through. Schemes of Spanish students for a bullfight in the E-300 corridor were abandoned when Mr. Arrca .ola declined to play the bull. A cultural exchange between French and German class, designed to balance the number of boys and girls, was unsuccessful. Still deprived of female companionship, the German students were also thwarted in their desire for a “biergarten” of their own. Latin students held their Roman banquet as usual, but Miss Joiner firmly vetoed the drive for “a real orgy, just like the good old days. In this way, the boys of the Industrial Arts Department readied themselves for competitive jobs in the real world. Architectural and Engineering Drafting pre- pared boys for more advanced college work. Other courses were vocationally-oriented. Boys in Wood Shop and Metal Shop became artists of their medium. They gained intimate knowledge of the complex mechanical marvels of our day. Indeed, all Industrial Arts lacked was girls. The idea of Girls’ Home Technology was very appealing to the boys. They conducted a recruiting drive to entice members of the weaker (and prettier) sex to their domain. However, their sledgehammer techniques apparently failed. Mr. Lloyd Dcvcrcaux 156 Mr. Harold Carpenter, Chairman Mr. Paul McLaughlin SAFETY Mr. Fred Harris In futile attempts to dissuade students from taking Driver’s Ed. as a joke, teachers explained in full the serious consequences of bad driving through a three part formula. This consisted of classroom study in which students were taught what driving mistakes are, and how to avoid them. They then proceeded to the simulator, where films made visual the driving situations discussed. Finally came Behind the Wheel. The stu- dents spent half their time at the range, mostly trying to parallel park. They occu- pied the other half on the road, watching classmates attempting to avoid suicide. B.T.W. gave some students a chance to demonstrate 3ny bad habits they might have picked up, and also gave those who had initiative a chance to improvise. Mr. Michael Battista HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics Department was crucial for girls when it came to cultivating domestic talent. The Homemaking courses were expected to save untold future marriages by imparting the necessities of how to run a home. By the same token, who knows what reincarnation of Julia Child may emerge in later life from a food course, nor which jet-set couturiers might be inspired by the clothing unit. Interior Decorating stressed architecture, financing, construct- ion, and landscaping of homes, as well as what goes with a purple sofa and an orange chair. He scores 23 points less on the first quiz than on the third test, on which he docs 83.6% as well as the average of the first two tests plus the fourth quiz. Will John pass math? Well ... John is a typical student of the mystical art of mathematics, working his way from Essential Mathematics to Differential and Integral Calculus by counting on his fingers. John’s problems began with his first introduction to algebraic vegetable soup. He had trouble in geometry because of poor art work; his circles looked like triangles. Yet through it all, his soul was uplifted by the thought that some superhuman force was preserving him for nobler pursuits-advanced algebra. John has seen “Donald Duck in Mathcmagicland’’ five times. One must admit that there is something of the supernatural about a transcendental function above and beyond the bounds of mathematical logic. Recently, John took a nine weeks’ course called Introduction to Computers, where he learned “to talk to computers in their own language. Well-equipped (at the beginning of the year) laboratories were provided for testing theories. Students explored the inner workings of frogs and atoms. They learned how to compute the fudge factor (100%) and make artistic DNA models; they did not learn to avoid thermometer breakage. Periodic crashes heralded the demise of another Erlcnmeyer flask or 500 ml. beaker. Gases from chemistry labbers’ bubbling test tubes perfumed the science corridor. Physicists applied their com- plex mathematical knowledge to stand their hair on end, a feat accomplished only by ordinary mortals running into Mr. Panther. Hard-working biologists spied on bacteria, macerated planarians, and cleaned up after baby chicks. Scientific studies raised new questions for students: “Is this gas poisonous?” “What experiment arc we doing anyhow?” “Where did that frog go?” “Are we seeing a movie today?” Science students were the envy of their friends as they told of roasting hot dogs over the Bunsen burners and sampling home-made wine in fermentation experiments. They bore wounds from the Wash Bottle Wars with fortitude and pride. And though a lab partner may have absconded with the lab notes or spilled hydrochloric acid on his buddy’s textbook, all was forgiven in the never-ending pursuit of scientific know- ledge. On the day before Christmas Vacation, these privileged people merely walked into the library and began to sing, which almost caused the severely shocked IMC staff to lose its composer. Another noteworthy achievement was the autumn present- ation of the opera Carmen. In keeping with the ecumenical spirit of the times, this production was the result of collabora- tion between Highland Park and Deerfield music students, and was highlighted by the gracious participation of the Chicago Lyric Opera Company. The always notable staff promoted fine student-teacher relationships exemplified by Younk's Place. Mr. Haberland showed that even word pollution could be fun, as long as he kept to his own quarters. In addition, the department snared some new members, who provided a change of tempo. The cvcr-popular old favorites of the department were instrumental in its resounding success. The Madrigal Singers and other clubs and choirs were tuneful as usual, and the Stage Band (always an essential organ of the department) won a rating of “excellent” in suburban competition. The Winter Concert “hallelujahed the beginning of the cold season, although by spring the scene switched to Oklahoma. Silver-throated studentsthought that they had found the keys to success as they trilled their ways up the chorus scale, beginning as Cadets and sometimes reaching Madrigals, the highest note of accomplishment. Passers-by could not help noticing that the halls were alive with the sound of music. Mr. Marlin Haberland. Chairman Mr. Donald Younker Miss Penny Spencer, Chairman Mr. Leonard Becker Mr. Robert Anthony SOCIAL STUDIES Miss Marguerite Prahl Mr. James Hayes The rapidly-expanding Social Studies Department spawned several new courses this year. Exceedingly proper sophomores studied British History, while their second semester comrades concentrated on Russia. “Politics of Change” was offered to mercurial upper-classmen. Not confined merely to history, the Social Studies Department absorbed more territory, and introduced an experimental philosophy course mysteriously located in the IMC. These new fields of study, in addition to traditional courses like the perennially popular U.S. History, involved hordes of students in the social studies. They all stormed the main desk of the library promptly at 3:31, frantically demanding Transcendentalist Revolt Against Materi- alism, The History of Africa South of the Sahara, or more simply, Ergang. Research papers took a heavy toll, as at least seventeen students disappeared into the 900’s, never to return. Those who survived ended the year with rich stores of historical gossip and a catchy new motto, “Cherchez the economic influences.” Students learned to question grammar school simplifications. Not all Africans were primitive savages, not all Romans lived in villas, and not all wars were fought in technicolor. Our politically-minded history students did, however, fail to shake one of our sterling traditions.. . the Amherst Series lives on. In concluding the 1969 LITTLE GIANT, thanks go to the Highland Park Herald and Walinger Studios for their innumerable photographs. We are particu- larly indebted to our photography staff, who, at the insistence of both our coordinators and section heads, were dragged to every school activity this year. ltis impossible to express our gratitude to Gene Weiss, head photographer, for his arty photos, long hours in the darkroom, and infinite patience with us when we lost the fruit of his labors. It goes without saying that we would have been helpless without the devoted aid of the entire staff, especially Krumb, Laurie, Nancy, Jean, Bob, Sandy, 176 is Judy, Nan, Ricky, Jane, Jayne, Martha, Mary, Brad, Michael, Larry, Cathy, Liz, Joanne, Judy, Kay no noise Gendron, Wendy, Laura who typed until her hands were blue, and last of all, Diana.
