Just a “Passport, Please” was the only requirement for an evening of gaiety, fun, music, and original entertainment. Visiting England, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, the travelers saw such diverse sights as the Beatles, a German drinking party, and the “Small House of Uncle Thomas.” The show was an exceptionally well- balanced mixture of music, dancing, and creative skits,—one of the best Stunts in the history of Highland Park High School. backstage James Lee Toby Leeds Rachele Len .ini Lawrence Lerner David Leshtz 34 Jill Levey Joel Levin Joe Leuer Anthony Levy Peter Levy J. Before the storm brewed, semester finals took their toll January 20 to 22. Students eagerly awaited the opening of the doors to the test rooms, but even more impatiently for the end of testing. Started last year, the project was enlarged this year. The campaign adopted a symbol, the “dirty bird,” which was used in mysterious headlines in Shoreline before the campaign began, and in clean-up posters in classrooms, signs in the washrooms, displays in the showcases, murals in the cafeterias, and gum bags by the drinking fountains—all fea- tures of the campaign. H.P.H.S. took first place in the Illinois High School Speech Contest this year. At the district contect, held February 13, Mary Michell and Mark Lavin won first place, in prose read- ing and after-dinner speaking respectively. Adrianne Fishman placed third in comedy reading, Jeff Gusfield in original mono- logue, and Dan Gruber in extemporaneous speaking. All of these students went on to win the sectional meet. In April, Mary Michell won a first and Mark Lavin a fourth at the state meet. Roy Taibleson Randell Taradash Paul Grossman and Dan Gruber, Rebuttal. Absent: Jim Oliff and Mike Rosenfield. Debaters Paul Grossman, Dan Gruber, Jim Oliff, and Mike Rosenfield appeared twice on Rebuttal on WBBM-TV. On November 21 they defeated Homewood-Flossmoor, as they supported the affirmative side of the question: Resolved that the election of the President should be by direct popular vote. They took the affirmative again on March 13, defeating Aurora East on the question of raising the driving age to eighteen. 52 The 1965 Penguin Swim Show, held May 7 and 8, was the culmination of months of hard work. Starting in October, the girls loyally sacrificed their hair during the weekly practices. By March, a Chicago theme had been chosen, ballets had been written, and nightly practices had begun in the boys’ pool. The success of this year’s show was largely due to the encourage- ment of the sponsors, Miss Steinbach and Miss Nelson, and to the support of the club heads, Linda Manahan and Ellen Bernstein. Playing superbly all year, the Gi- ants finished with a 7 and 1 record. The season provided many thrilling moments that will be remembered for a long time. Who can forget Emmerich’s field goal against Evanston, the four touchdowns against New Trier’s vaunted defense, the amazing second half comeback at Waukegan, or the tremendous defensive battle at Oak Park? With the two touchdowns in the last three minutes of the Morton game, the championship was ours and the goal posts were down. At the special celebration assembly, the exultant student body honored the champs. Outstanding performers were Scott Williams, quarterback; Dick Emmerich and John Mauck, backs; Steve Glickauf and Peter Kroll, ends; Terry Sedik and Dave Joseph, linemen; and John Harris, center. The crowd would not stop cheering for the coaches John Chickerneo, Jay Sanders, Dan Wisniewski, and Cal Spears. Credit goes to managers Bud Bol- ton, varsity, and Tom Spitz, frosh-soph, and to coaches Dick Ault and Melvin Edwards. This year’s soph leaders, Charlie Cochran, John Hinde, and Bob Barancik, will strengthen next year’s varsity squad as juniors. The season started out with losses to Glenbrook North and North Chi- cago, with the damaging loss of the last year’s playmaking guard Dennis Rafferty for the entire season with an eye injury. After crushing Warren, the Parkers were pitted against their highly-ranked chief rival, New Trier, in their first suburban league encounter. After trailing 17-2 in the first quarter, the Giants put on an outstanding performance, led by Fred Lind and Jerrold Carl, and defeated the Indians by two points in a real thriller. It was a triumph for the team, a thrill to the delirious Highland Park fans, and of great personal satisfaction to coach Fred Dickman, for it was his team’s first victory over New Trier in his five-year tenure at Highland Park. In the next 11 games the Giants had rough go of it, losing seven and winning four. As they traveled to Morton on February 12, their suburban league record was 4-6 and they were facing a fast and hot-shooting Mustang squad which held second place in the league standings and was highly-ranked in the state. The game moved quickly and. as expected, Morton took a 27-21 lead over Highland Park. But then the tables turned, and the Little Giants, led by Fred Lind, Steve Glickauf, and Tom Gmeiner, outscored the Mustangs 30-9 in the second quarter to take a commanding 51-36 halftime lead. Morton gamely fought back to win four points late in the third quarter, but with Joel Koran- sky and Dick Wolk spearheading the offense and our tightening of the 1-2-2 defense, the Giants pulled away to a crushing 21 point victory 90-69. Highland Park finished its season with a significant improvement over the beginning. H.P. swamped Evanston with Fred Lind playing outstanding ball scoring 46 points and thereby breaking his own Suburban League scoring record with 403 points for the season. In the regionals the Giants fared well. They smashed Liberty ville and then in a fantastic game beat the Lake Forest Scouts who had beaten the Giants badly earlier in the year. This game was the highlight of the Giant Season for in the second and third quarters the Giants, led by Steve Glickauf, played terrific ball which completely destroyed a fine Lake Forest team.
