Each year of high school adds to our knowledge of ourselves and the world about us. As freshmen, we know only the parts of school which directly concern us — the cafeteria, sessions, snack bar, the bus foyer, and a few classrooms. Our activities are only a small part of all those offered. During our sophomore and junior years, we par- ticipate in more activities and discover other areas of the school. We begin to understand that to learn is not merely to take first-year French, then second- year French, or algebra, then geometry. The process of learning is cumulative and cannot be divided into definite stages. As seniors, we see even more clearly that, just as a poem is more than imagery, rhythm, and diction, an education is greater than individual courses, ex- tracurricular activities, and beautiful school buildings. Wearing wool coats or cotton windbreakers, we enter the high school 180 days a year. With each year, we discover more shortcuts, more tricks. As freshmen, we queue up for lunch; by our junior year, our timing sharpened, we know exactly how to slither into the line. Our hockey and football games as fresh- men are far different from our pol- ished performances as upperclass- men. 5
