As freshmen, we know only the parts of school which directly concern us — the cafeteria, sessions, snack bar, the bus foyer, and a few classrooms. Our activities are only a small part of all those offered. During our sophomore and junior years, we par- ticipate in more activities and discover other areas of the school. We begin to understand that to learn is not merely to take first-year French, then second- year French, or algebra, then geometry. The process of learning is cumulative and cannot be divided into definite stages. As seniors, we see even more clearly that, just as a poem is more than imagery, rhythm, and diction, an education is greater than individual courses, ex- tracurricular activities, and beautiful school buildings. THE M OF (15 PARTS Wearing wool coats or cotton windbreakers, we enter the high school 180 days a year. With each year, we discover more shortcuts, more tricks. As freshmen, we queue up for lunch; by our junior year, our timing sharpened, we know exactly how to slither into the line. Our hockey and football games as fresh- men are far different from our pol- ished performances as upperclass- men. 5 Four years of high school hove brought us mo- ments of both satisfaction and futility. In future years we will remember entering the doors as lonely freshmen, as well as graduating as confident seniors. Our lasting memories, however, will be of the sum of our experiences, the education which we received here at Highland Park High School. I Miss Morgan advises her Ameri- can Lit students to use concrete examples in their thomes. Miss Edith Morgan DEDICATION TO THOSE WHO DEDICATED YEARS TO US The teacher is a person, but if we were to follow him through a school day, we might readily believe that he is superhuman. From the 6:30 a.m. alarm to the 1:00 a.m. lights out, the teacher moves through such varied activities as meeting 27 fidgety and eager session members, helping plan the next faculty meeting or PTA program, facing four or five classes and often a study hall, grading anywhere from 120 to 150 papers, planning lessons, and talking to parents. Despite his full schedule, he makes time to counsel us or give an extra thirty minutes for an explanation. We recognize four of the outstanding members of the HPHS staff in this dedication, realizing that to pay tribute to any dedicated teacher is to pay tribute to all of them. 8 Miss Beckmire explains a principio of diagramming to one of her English classes. One little-touted service of Miss Losswell is the teaching of a homo nursing unit to the home ec girls. SCIINCf FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Mr. A. E. Wollers, Superintendent of Town- Mr. C. S. Stunted, Principol of Highlond Pork ship High School District 113. High School. BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Harold E. Foremon, Jr., Mr. Horry W. Knoll, Mr. John H. Thomson, Mr. Poul Martin, Mrs. James Tibbetts, and Mr. William E. Nelson. Mr. Francis D. Weeks — insert picture. ADMINISTRATION The Board of Education has many vital functions. It not only acts on financial requests and sets school policy, but it also approves Homecoming and Junior Prom. Mr. Wolfers works closely with the Board in supervising and carrying out Board policies. Mr. Libakken scouts for new teachers and is in charge of such experimental programs as CBA in science and the aural-oral approach in language. One of Mr. Stunkel's major duties is approving our school's activities and projects. Maintenance of the school buildings and planning the budget for such maintenance are the main duties of Mr. Devereaux and Mr. Zaeske. Working together, all insure the quality of our education. Mr. Libakken, Assistant Superiniendent of Township High School District 113. Mr. Dovereaux, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. 10 ADMINISTRATION Most of the seemingly routine jobs moke the dif- ference between chaos and order in the school. All of the paychecks for the staff, mimeographed final exams, transcripts for colleges, messages from the switchboard stem from the administrative or main office staffs. Miss Tucker and Mr. Wisner oversee bookkeeping and budgeting, while Miss Appleton supervises the sales of books, supplies, and tickets in the bookstore. Mr. O'Neal, Director of Guidance. Mr. Panther, Dcon of Students. When a marshal hands us those long, white summonses, our usual reaction is both alarm and excitement. Often the mes- sages emanate from Mr. Panther, dean of students, or from Mr. O'Neal, guidance director. These men solve problems in- volving testing, travel, and honors. The adviser chairmen perform invaluable tasks, such as supervising class projects, cultivating student interest in voca- tions and colleges, helping plan each student's academic pro- gram, and establishing a relaxed, beneficial relationship be- tween the adults at HPHS and the students. Without the efforts of the competent office staff, under the direction of Miss Watts, the rest of the Guidance Department could not function as efficiently as it does. 12 ADVISER CHAIRMEN STANDING: Mr. Floyd, Mr. Broming, Mr. Mihura, Mr. Cosh. Dransfeldt not only lends authority to friendly admonitions, but also proves that a policeman can be a friend. Miss Thompson super- vises several study halls and a session. Under the direction of Mrs. Bock, the attend- ance office works with the nurses, study hall proctors, and teachers to see that we are all [present to take advantage of the educational op- portunities offered. Our speech instructors guide us in learning to talk with assurance before others. By teaching us to outline and organize, the English faculty help us to develop concise, logical writing styles. Through their efforts, we have emerged from their courses knowing not only how to read, write, and speak, but also how to think. These English teachers demonstrato tho usefulness of the overhead pro- jector. SEATED, Miss Meisterhcim, Miss Borman. STANDING, Mrs. Massover, Miss Palmer, Mr. Stoyanoff, Mr. Munski, Mrs. Rcdbro. FRONT ROW: Mr. McCord, Mr. Pofahl, Mr. Chickerneo, Mr. Brotzman, Mr. Winklcy. The math department is no longer sure whether 2 + 2 = 4, With the new mathematics program, teach- ers are de-emphasizing computation and stressing an understanding of theory. During the past few years, the science department has also revamped its pro- gram, using experimental courses, such as CBA and Chem Study, as well as the more traditional ap- proaches. The students in the experimental groups per- form experiments and draw their own conclusions, rather than finding the expected results in the text- book first. An industrial arts student, working with fine equipment, applies to practical ends the theories of math and science. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT BACK ROW: Mr. Edwards, Mr. Hanson, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Eisemon. ABSENT: Miss Spencer. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT STANDING: Miss Wagner, SEATED: Miss Cairncross, deportment chairman. Miss Winkelman. Unlike most home economic courses that just offer sewing and cooking, our department furnishes interior design, home nursing, home management, as well as a complete course in child care where students actually take care of nursery school children. BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STANDING: Miss Wall, Mr. Spears, Mr. Voss, Mr. Mihura, deportment chairman. SEATED: Mrs. Mount, Mrs. Freehling. Today there is more of a demand for business education than ever before. Meeting this demand, the department has expanded its program to offer courses in office machines, typing, short- hand, bookkeeping and secretarial practice. The language department offers an unusual number of languages — French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. Different methods used to teach them have placed equal stress on the spoken language, grammar, and vocabulary. Students in social studies classes emerge well aware of the presence of the post. They learn the importance of current events by seeing how today's problems originated. 17 FACULTY GIRLS' GYM DEPARTMENT Miss till, deportment chairman, Miss Grabin, Miss Hayes, Miss Bond, Miss Hulbert, Miss Ponozzo, Miss Haddy, NOT PICTURED: Miss Gamble, Miss Tank. The physical education department heartily endorses the President's physical fitness program. In four years of school, students work out a total of almost 480 hours in such pur- suits as basketball, volleyball, swimming, trampoline, gym- nastics, and dance. Like the gym department, the music department is inter- ested in the development of basic skills, timing, and co- ordination. The two music teachers direct several choruses, an orchestra, and two bands. To our two art teachers, art is both a vocation and an avocation. One is an expert potter, and the other an expert painter. In addition to instruction in these areas, the de- partment offers courses ranging from art appreciation, to commercial art, to design. MUSIC DEPARTMENT What'j the score?'' Mr. Finch, department chairman, asks Mr. Haberlond, seated. ART DEPARTMENT The still life looked good enough to cat so Mrs. Esser- man, department chairman, and Mr. Prokos had a foost. The junior sessions nominate candidates on the basis of leadership, character, and service. After the principal, deans, and junior session advisers have narrowed the list to three girls, the juniors vote on these three. Mary Amidei was selected in 1962. The Harvard Book Club offers an award to the most outstanding junior boy, who is chosen by the principal, deans, and junior boys' session advisers. In 1962, Charles Redman received the Harvard Book Award. On the basis of the Notional Merit exam token in their junior year, 7% of the seniors qualified for the semi-finals. The 24 semi- finalists mode HPHS one of the highest ranked schools in Illinois. SCRUBBING, RAKING EQUALED SCHOLARSHIPS SENIOR OFFICERS Top to Bottom: Kenneth Brecher, President; Brian Marcus, Treasurer; Kay Landau, Sec- retory; Ellen Kotz, Vice-President; Gerry Heyman, Social Chairman. The senior class engages in many activities, oome have the purpose of raising money for senior scholar- ships. One of the most important activities, initiated in 1961, is Senior Work Day, a day when the seniors do household jobs for those in the neighborhood, and donate the money they earn to the class. This year on October 19, after a day of hard work, the class spon- sored a picnic at Sunset Park. Raking leaves was only ono of the many jobs we undertook. After our tasks were finished, Mr. Floyd, class adviser, provided entertainment for the picnic. 26 SENIORS Even though HPHS had grown smaller and more familiar to us we seniors still found it a hike from M210 to the boys' gym or the audi- torium stage. As we moved from college rejection jitters and job inter- views to second-semester senior-itis, we realized how quickly the pres- ent was becoming the past. Too soon Senior Work Day, Stunts, Oper- etta, and Graduation came and went. The weeks flew by os we wrote yet another English theme, crammed in chemistry formulas, and finished history projects. We couldn't believe it was our turn to sing We're gonna graduate soon. It took that last long march to receive our diplomas for us to realize that four years at HPHS were symbolized in that one small bit of paper. BONNIE AARON Excc. Bd. Rep. 2,- HGA 3,4; Chr. UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS Our organizational ability was pitted against that of AT T, as we juniors supervised and published the Buzz Book early in the year. Participation in col- lege days and career conferences con- vinced us that we had better begin to study and consider some important de- cisions we would hove to make. In the spring, the Pat Floyd and Harvard Book awards reminded us of the object of our years at HPHS — a well-rounded education. The climax of the year was Prom, the culmination of three years of unity and apprenticeship. But increased activities and difficult courses tested our new-found sophistication. We had to cope with dissected frogs and bisected angles. We developed class consciousness ( 65 Best Alive ), which we put to good use by promoting class projects like Sophomore Dance and Sophomore Picnic. And most of all, we began to appreciate some of the bene- fits of a high school education. SOPHOMORE CLASS EXECUTIVE BOARD BACK ROW: Miss McKichon, Scot! Williams, President. Brad Aten, Pool Eisner. We freshmen seemed fo be always in a hurry, confusedly charging up the down stairway, our arms trying to en- compass an unwieldy mass of books. We expended our energy on the class picnic, four-year plans, student gov- ernment day, and selling a myriad magazine subscriptions. After the first semester, we became used to hours of homework, algebra quizzes, and haughty upperclassmen. We knew what was expected of us and, by the end of this year, we felt ourselves to be an integral part of school life. 61 FRESHMEN MR. At HPHS non-studying school ac- tivities are called extracurricular activities or participation in organizations. These activities are carried on by student groups varying greatly in membership and interest. Organizations are flexible at HPHS. If we are interested in an activity or subject not already covered, we may induce a teach- er to sponsor the club, then write a constitution, and become recognized as an official organization. The diversity of the clubs shows the diversity among HPHS's 1800 students. Interests vary from semi-academic to artistic to athletic. Archaeology Club is interested in the past; the Science Club in the future. HGA and Varsity Club encourage athletic prowess and competition,- the Cheer Squads and Pep Club arouse sideline enthusiasm for sports. Garrick Club members face an audience,- the Stage Crew is reflected in the glow of the lights. Both Debate Club and Rifle Club allow students to let off hot air — but in different ways. Participation in one or several of the close to 30 organiza- tions and activities available at HPHS is valuable. While member- ship in too many clubs may cancel the benefits, activities are a vital part of our whole education. STUDENTS VOICED IDEAS ON HONOR SYSTEM STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES BACK ROW: J. They be- came members of two Highland Park families during their ten months' stay. To get better acquainted with our nation's traditions, Tania and Katsu studied American literature and history. During the year they participated in many American Field Service conferences and forums; their year was culminated with a transcontinental tour. Our friend- ships with Katsu and Tania have given us a warmer, less impersonal, idea of their native lands. Art Alschuler was chosen by the AFS to spend the sum- mer of 1962 in Germany. His stay with a German family in Schleswig allowed him to observe German school life and recreation. The highlight of his summer was a trip to West Berlin, the most magnificent place I've ever seen. Although the agenda emphasizes projects for senior schol- arship money, the real benefits are in working together. A welcome tea, Route 66, introduced the frosh little sisters, to their junior big sisters, and explained the rules of the school through skits. In November the girls competed for prizes, as individuals and for their sessions, with the top salesman be- ing awarded a stereo phonograph. Soon after the magazine drive came the Banquet and Benefit Show, Once Upon a Time, at which HPHS girls combined a money-making project and an opportunity to honor their mothers. During the all-school elec- tions in the spring, they sold I have voted tags. At the schol- arship assembly, the climax of the year, Kathy McGuire pre- sented scholarships to seven tearful, but very happy, senior girls. This year, two fun nights were held; the gyms, in which volleyball, basketball, trampoline, and dancing were held, as well as the boys' pool, were open for all students to use and enjoy. With the money earned from these projects. Boys' Club was proud to award $500 scholarships to two deserving boys. The muscular men in letter sweaters who patrol the up-and- down stairways are members of the Varsity Club. In addition to ensuring order in the halls, the 40-member club sponsors dances, including Homecoming Dance, and, to earn money for scholarships, sells pencils, programs at football games, and food at basketball games. This rite and fifteen points earned by participation in sports are the quali- fications for membership in HGA, girls' athletic organization of HPHS. HGA had many activities throughout the year. Early this fall, an introductory Coffee was held for the faculty to introduce them to the activities of the club. Among these activities were Home- coming favor sales, running the hot dog stand at football games, Father-Daughter Banquet, two playdays, the Swim Show, Freshman Initiation, and the dance concert. Miss Haddy and Maria Tatar, president, worked with the board members to promote intra- mural sports and dance activities and to raise funds to give $500 scholarships to five of its 175 members. The result of all their practice was evident at the annual Swim Show May 3 and 4. Under the guidance of Dr. Munski and Mr. Stoy- anoff, Terry Fischer, editor, brought many innovations to Shoreline. In general, the paper became freer in content. More opinion was expressed, and there were more articles for more people. Features such as Perspective brought the cultural aspect of the community to the students, and the series on the various school departments represented the academic phase. All in all. Statui Quo Moit Popular Activity THE BIG CAMP-PAIGN— On November 2, 1962, the senior class launched The Big Campaign, an almost completely original musical, based on activities at summer camp. The camp season began after a short STATION BREAK when parents put their kids ON THE RIGHT TRACK for summer recreation and fun. The campers were dubious about their summer at first. Tucker Whitson and Terry Hanck didn't quite understand the STATUS QUO; the girls found that WAKING UP IS HARD TO DO and many campers wrote tearful LETTERS home. But everyone soon got into the full swing of camptivities. The boys took an enthusiastic part in ACTIVITY HOUR; the canoe trip, BIVOUAC, was a success and the girls were having a HUMDINGER OF A SUMMER. A dissenter, Jon Abarbanel, responded negatively to athletics in an INTELLECTUAL'S LAMENT; the girls art class rebelled against COMPULSORY FUN and the infirmary became the MOST POPULAR ACTIVITY. Most of the campers, however, had a good time planning KITCHEN RAIDs and working out in their EXER- CYCLE. Neil Levin dazzled real parents as well as stage parents with his authentic impersonation and excellent piano technique. The campers may not have enjoyed parents' weekend but they loved the SOCIAL. Kafsu, our foreign exchange student from Japan, in his ORIENTAL OBSERVATION commented on American Life. All felt the glow of the campfire UNDER THE STARS. From the way the campers sang THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND and listened to Lynda Cooper's TASTE OF HONEY and Fred Gruber's JAB8ERWOCKY it was clear that they were rejoicing as they shouted out, THAT'S IT, WE'RE OUT, WE'RE THROUGH. Whether they liked it or not, however, the camp season was'over, and even the staff was forced to admit that THE BIG CAMPAIGN had been a big success. 93 LAURELS In its annual Adcraft Contest issue, the Highland Park NEWS prints the work of HPHS's commercial art closs; each student in the doss designs an ad placed in the paper by a local merchant; the NEWS awards a first place trophy and plaques. Under the forceful leadership of Coach John Chickerneo and his capable staff, the Little Giants battled to sixth place Suburban League finish with a deceiving 2—3—2 record. Despite injuries to key players, the Little Giants functioned as a unit. On frequent oc- casions in the waning minutes of a game when all seemed hope- less, our team engineered drives down the length of the field. It was Highland Park which produced the only flaw in New Trier's championship record; it was Highland Park which was the first team to score against Evanston in six games; it was Highland Park which tied Waukegan with a tremendous last minute drive. Al- though at times our offense lacked striking power, a staunch de- fense usually held the opposition at bay. A trio of all-state play- ers, Jim Panther, fourth highest Suburban League scorer, Kerry Green, and Leon Chickerneo, spearheaded our Giants. These boys and their teammates comprised the hardest playing football team at Highland Park in recent years. 96 SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL BACK ROW: Scott Williams, Bill Peterson, Bill Kurgan, Ed Houschild, Jacob Lewis, Bill Snow, Stan Mozzetta, Randy Tora- dash, Henry Koronsky, Coach J. The Highland Park harriers, defending state champions, suffered tremendous personnel losses due to graduation and injury. Chuck Redman was the only one of last year's top seven runners to return, although there were a few promising juniors and seniors new to cross country, who partially filled the vacancies. Early in the season Redman received a foot injury which placed him on the sidelines for the remainder of the year. Despite these handicaps, such swift runners as Eric Padderud and Jeff Goldman helped Highland Park place third in the Lake County Championship with all Little Giants finishing at least in the top third of the 110 participants. Next year's prospects appear excellent, with Dave Palladini, Alan Winkley, and Gary Fields returning to form a hard core for future action. Although the season was brightened with a few spirited games, such as a 64—54 win over Oak Park, and a crushing 79—51 victory over Niles, the Giants were frustrated by many disappointing losses. One example was a see-saw battle with Proviso which saw the cagers tied 60—60 in the last twenty seconds of play. The Pirates received an extra free throw, giving them the victory by one point. In a similar contest with Glenbrook, the Parkers lost in the final seconds 58—56. It was the excellent coaching of Mr. Fred W. Dickman, along with the skillful shooting of Mike Baer, Jim Panther, and Fred Lind which saved the Giants from worse defeat. GRAPPLERS SUFFERED POOR SEASON Last year the 1963 Highland Park wrestling team appeared as if it would become the finest squad Highland Park has ever produced. But misfortune struck a number of key men, who were injured in other sports before the wrestling season ever began. If the 1963 Little Giant deserves praise, the credit should go to the staff, who put in long nights laboring over layouts and copy; to the photographers, Lance Golden and Jon Shulman, who spent hours in the darkroom developing pictures for us, when they should have been studying; and to Walinger Studio for their patience and cooperation, especially during senior portraits and Stunts. I can never adequately express my appreciation to Miss Helen Palmer and Dr. John Munski, yearbook advisers. Without their indefatigable, selfless efforts, the Little Giant could not have been published. Warm thanks go to Marsha Goldberg, Walter Schwalm, Ellen Falkof, Nancy Bairn, Nancy Gordon, Ellen Shapiro, Kay Kohler, Laura DeKoven, Jill Rizzolo, and Diane Beins for the special devotion they gave, when help was most needed. And, of course, the Little Giant staff thanks the senior class and its advisors. Miss Roberta Shine and Mr. David Floyd, for their encouragement and cooperation. Our publisher this year is the American Yearbook Company. The S. K. Smith Company printed the cover. VIVIEN CLAIR 128
