Wrestlers Ready With a year’s experience behind them, the wrestling team had a comparatively good season. The grapplcrs beat such schools as Zion, Lake Forest, Glenbrook, and Libcrtyvillc. Next year, the wrestlers will compete officially in the Suburban League. The varsity squad was comprised largely of juniors. Among these were Dick Yerxa, Keith Burge, Dick Zartlcr and Dan Gottlieb. Dick Giangiorgi did an ex- cellent job in the 175 lb. division. The Frosh-Soph squad also turned in a good record. Standouts were Jim Marchi, Jim Johnson and Jack Jashelski. Coach Don Kane also doubled as coach of the varsity while Mr. Ostrander was ill. The contest consists of a two-mile run (one and one-half miles for frosh-soph) over an irregular course. This year, all home meets were held at Exmoor Countrs Club. Despite their unimpressive record, the harriers steadily improved during the season. Showing special promise for the future was John Farr, a sophomore, who placed third in his division at the Suburban league meet. The varsity, suffered from an undersized squad. Nevertheless, I.anc Kendig and John Schiffer scored consistently in the meets. Coach Ault looks for Highland Park to be a major power in cross country in coming years. VARSITY BASKKETBALL TEAM Bollom Row: Grady Elli , Steve Sidari, Pat Barker, Wayne Bellci. Top Row: Tom Peyton. Hugh Scyfarth, Buzzy Joseph, Joe Borgini. Mr. Hammcrbcrg, coach. Sharpshooters Coach Wally Hammcrbcrg’s varsity had their moments of glory. Although they only won two of fifteen contests against league opponents, they had a five and one record in non-league games. Joe Borgini was second in league scoring and was among the best centers in the area. He possessed a deadly hook shot and was a constant threat from the outside. Buzzy Joseph, Hugh Scyfarth, Steve Sidari. Wayne Bellei and Pat Barker were the senior standouts, while juniors Tom Peyton and Grady Ellis excelled. Toward the end of the season there was marked improvement in their overall game. The high point of the year came in the second to last game when the Parkers swamped New Trier by twenty-one points. The sophomores, coached by Mr. Baldrini, had a mcdiocorc season. However, they did look sharp at times. Shelly Erikson, Marty Gmeiner and Tony Gualandri led the sophs. With improved shooting they may be a serious threat in the league in future seasons. Page 20
