Barbara Kurtzon and Dave Rudolph were crowned king and queen of the 1956 Junior Prom. A Bit of Heaven” was held at the High School for the first time on June 9, 1956. Dan Belloc and his orchestra played for the crowd on this warm summer evening. Under the leadership of our Junior Executive Board, the entire class helped to make our Junior Prom, one always memorable, especially since it set a new and happy precedent. Besides dancing inside, much of the crowd adjourned to the court where a flowing water fountain was the center of attraction. Presiding over “A Bit of Heaven” arc Ann Tighc. Shirley Wyatt, Barbara Balaban, Barbara Kurtzon, queen; David Rudolph, king; Fred Krase, Bob Wilson, and Buxzy Joseph. Snake Dance When the hour of seven arrived on the evening of October 19. 1956, the annual Homecoming week-end began. Led by the cheerleaders, many eager HPHS students, wearing blue and white beanies, formed a snake dance through the streets of Highland Park. With a “Blue, while, fight, fight” and a Go, Highland Park, Go” the stu- dents filled the auditorium with cheers and bright colored banners. These were only a few of the features of the rally, at which the seniors won the cheering contest. At the game on Saturday against Proviso, many of the alumni were seen cheering our Giants on. Hoarse from the game, Saturday evening found us completing a festive day at the Homecoming Dance. Ivor Buerk and his orchestra provided music for the evening, made possible by the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs. There was a record sale of 274 tickets, making the dance a profitable good time. Where are the snakes at their dance? Hail, hail the gang's all here -— consoling themselves over the day's loss. Political Pot-Pourri The campaign came to Highland Park on October 25. 1956, in the form of the Girls’ Club Banquet and Benefit. Limited space allowed eight hundred girls and their mothers to attend the Ban- quet, while 1019 flocked to the Benefit show. The latter, consisting of songs, dances, and skits by an all-girl cast, provided $6 X) for the Girls’ Club scholarship fund. The waiters (better known as the Boys’ Club) did a fine job serving the dinner. By the way, they cut down on accidents this year. The script committee consisted of Ronnie Johnson. Richie Kushen. Mollv Mason. Karen Lauter, and Roger Mandel. As always, the annual production was sponsored by the senior class. The proceeds, unusually good as the auditorium was packed to the gills, were put toward the publication of the Little Giant,” with the drama department and the senior class getting some of the funds. Goofin’ off as usual that is what Mr. Munski. publications adviser, usually says about the Shoreline staff and it seems to be true. This year Shoreline has strived toward a better school paper. The class columns were removed and replaced by better feature material which was the first big step in the right direction. Shore- line had three special issues the year ... a Christmas issue printed with red and green ink, an April Fools issue with take offs on the regular columns and an election issue in coordination with the Student Council. The paper is published once every two weeks and eighteen issues were published during the year, with the first issue coming out the first day of school. When Those Little Giants Fall In Line Coach I)on Burton's varsity failed to win a league contest; however, they won their only non-league game from Fenger and in league competition they tied Niles. 'Hie Little Giants were led by Bill ('ora, one of the league’s best fullbacks, and signal caller Hugh Seyfarth. Halftrack Dave Rudolph, hampered by a knee injury, looked especially good in the few games he played. John Gugliclmi, Rich Giangiorgi, Mike Reeb and Bill Harris were standouts in the Parker line. At the beginning of the season, the best of the freshmen were brought up to aid Coach Hammerberg’s sophomore squad. Midway in the season it was decided that, in consideration of future football, it would lx better to let these freshmen play with the frosh squad. After the freshmen went back to their team, the sophomores forfeited their remaining games so that juniors might play sophomore ball to gain experience. For this reason the sophomores are not pictured. (k ach Richard Baldrini’s freshman squad was one of the best in recent years. They were especially successful after receiving the players from the sophomore squad. Halfback Jack Jashclski and quarterback Bob Ltickman were among the frosh standouts. The contest consists of a two-mile run (one and one-half miles for frosh-soph) over an irregular course. This year, all home meets were held at Exmoor Countrs Club. Despite their unimpressive record, the harriers steadily improved during the season. Showing special promise for the future was John Farr, a sophomore, who placed third in his division at the Suburban league meet. The varsity, suffered from an undersized squad. Nevertheless, I.anc Kendig and John Schiffer scored consistently in the meets. Coach Ault looks for Highland Park to be a major power in cross country in coming years. The grapplcrs beat such schools as Zion, Lake Forest, Glenbrook, and Libcrtyvillc. Next year, the wrestlers will compete officially in the Suburban League. The varsity squad was comprised largely of juniors. Among these were Dick Yerxa, Keith Burge, Dick Zartlcr and Dan Gottlieb. Dick Giangiorgi did an ex- cellent job in the 175 lb. division. The Frosh-Soph squad also turned in a good record. Standouts were Jim Marchi, Jim Johnson and Jack Jashelski. Coach Don Kane also doubled as coach of the varsity while Mr. Ostrander was ill. Sharpshooters Coach Wally Hammcrbcrg’s varsity had their moments of glory. Although they only won two of fifteen contests against league opponents, they had a five and one record in non-league games. Joe Borgini was second in league scoring and was among the best centers in the area. He possessed a deadly hook shot and was a constant threat from the outside. Buzzy Joseph, Hugh Scyfarth, Steve Sidari. Wayne Bellei and Pat Barker were the senior standouts, while juniors Tom Peyton and Grady Ellis excelled. Toward the end of the season there was marked improvement in their overall game. The high point of the year came in the second to last game when the Parkers swamped New Trier by twenty-one points. The sophomores, coached by Mr. Baldrini, had a mcdiocorc season. However, they did look sharp at times. Shelly Erikson, Marty Gmeiner and Tony Gualandri led the sophs. With improved shooting they may be a serious threat in the league in future seasons. Page 20 SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL TEAM Bottom Row: Barry Golden and Bill Sangerman, managers. The junior varsity squad participated in basketball for the first time this year. Several juniors obtained valuable playing experience. Ronnie Maestri, Toby Aaron, Wally Stein and Harry Vignocchi were the JV standouts. These players, along with Peyton and Ellis, should be the backbone of next year’s varisty. The freshman teams were especially successful. Coach Holding’s B squad won a fair share of their games and showed steady improvement. The A squad, coached by Mr. Hall, took third in the unofficial league standings. Tim Russell appeared to be one of the finest freshman cagcrs in recent years, averaging thirteen points per game. Other freshmen to watch next year arc Steve Oggel, Chuck Mau and Bob Hollmann. Page 22 FRESHMAN A TEAM Bottom Row: Bob Ohlwcin. Howard lashtz. Jack Peterson, Terry Somenzi, Jim Juul. The Mermen The varsity swimming team swam their way to the most successful season that HPHS has had in several years. They took third in both the Suburban league and state, won the Riverside-Brookfield Invitational, and were third in the New Trier Relays. They lost only to New Trier and Evanston in league meets, and had a perfect record in non-league meets. Bill McycrhofT, a junior and the team’s high scorer, placed second in the 100- yard free style in both the Suburban League and state meets. Dave Drake, swim- ming in the 100-yard breaststroke, also took a pair of seconds. Don Strand finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in the league meet and fourth in the state meet, while Bob Wilson won the 50-yard free style in the league meet and placed third in the state. The sophomores and freshmen had records almost identical to the varsity. Both placed third in the Suburban I-caguc and were undefeated in out-of-league competition. Tops among the sophs were John Newmann, who took third in the 50-yard backstroke in the Suburban Ix-ague meet, Chuck Thompson, who took third in the 100-yard free style, and Richard Albin, who placed fourth in the 50- yard breaststroke. For the first time in many years the varsity nine had enough pitching depth to be a winning team. This year’s mound staff consisted of Roger Lunardi, Charles Root. Dick Kushen, R. Foreman, and Mike Morris. Other regulars in the lineup are Fred Krase, Denny Herrmann, Steve Shankman, and Terry Trcgcr. The first games showed a terrific improvement over last year. Tile sophomores seemed to be taking up where they left off last year. After winning most of their games as freshmen, they dropped only one early season contest this year. If this season’s freshman team improved its fielding it could equal the achievments of last year's frosh. FRESHMAN BASEBALL TEAM Front Row: Tom Wilson. Jack Peterson, Bob Gagcn. Dick Kubalck. The Racket Squad Although the stificst competition was yet to come, both tennis teams looked good early in the season. The varsity was almost the same team as last year, only the players had another season behind them. Dick Schnadig, I.in Simon and Pete Fcchhcimcr were slated to play singles while there was likely to be some shifting of the doubles pairs. Freshman George O’C-onnell could be all the team needed to beat traditional champs New Trier and Oak Park. The turnout for the frosh-soph squad was the largest ever, and also one of the best. Sophs John Newmann and Harry Oppenheimer wen able to help out on the varsity when needed. Lin Simon. Peter Fcchhcim- cr, and Fred Glazer of the varsity net squad certainly aren't practicing assiduously here! Putting Around litis year’s golf squad appeared to be a threat to the defending state champions. Composed of veteran lettermen, the varsity looked like it could be one of the best in Highland Park’s histon'. Pat Barker, Hugh Seyfarth and Steve Sidari were the nucleus of the team, and supporting them were many experienced players. If the golfers could go all the way, HPHS will have won more state golf titles than any other high school. The freshmen and sophomores participated in more interscholastic con- tests of their own this year. The overall picture for golf was excellent, both for this year and next. Recently, competition in swim- ming, badminton and ping pong was introduced. Conducted between sessions, intramurals stimu- lates homeroom loyalty. Scoring is done on the basis of games won, number of participants and number of games refereed by a session member. A losing ses- sion with many players may obtain more points than one that wins with few players. Every' year the point total of each session is compiled, and the session in each class with the most points is awarded a plaque. Also, the boy with the highest point total in each session receives an award. A special award is given each year to the boy who has accumulated the most points in his class for four years. Interclass tournaments are held in the major sports. First, the sessions of each class conduct a tournament among themselves. The top two winners of each hold an elimination to determine the best team in the school. Mr. Chet Carlson heads the intramural program. He is assisted by the session managers. Page 33 Girls' Sports BULLY Bruised shins mark the beginning of the first girls’ intramural sport — hockey, of course. Al Alschuler, who was convention secretary, was in charge of planning the whole affair. Two of the Student Council’s biggest projects arc the presentation of the Honor System and the School Chest drive. This year both of these were more successful than ever. Presiding over a Wednesday morning Student Council meeting are Dave Rudolph, president; Al Alschuler. vice-president; Pat Shcahen, treasurer; and Barb Kurtzon, secretary. Bottom Row: Dave Rudolph, president of Student Council; Richie Kushen, president of senior class; Ann Tighe. president of the Girls' Club; Dave Echt, president of the junior class. Service Marshals are chosen on a basis of leadership, service, character, and scholarship by the Supervisory- Board from nominations of the session teachers. This board, which is made up of leaders from the main or- ganizations in school and the officers of the Marshals, also set the rules and make sure that all the Marshals arc do- ing their job. Checking passes in the hall, ushering at school events, and helping on College Days are some of the responsibilities of the Marshals, as well as setting a good example for everyone in school. Page 44 The Girls’ and Boys’ Clubs arc the largest organizations in the school and arc each in charge of many activities throughout the year. Together they sponsor the National Honor Society initiation and the Homecoming Dance. Girls' Club Thr Girl ' Club Board are always working hard in Miss Morgan's room. The officers arc: Top Row: Miss Mor- gan. sponsor: Laurie Pcpc, treasurer; Linda Johnson, social chairman; Jeanne Dicrking. secretary. Bottom Row: Ann Tighc. president; Barb Kriser, vice-president. The girls’ biggest projects during the year include the Big-Little Sister Tea given by the juniors for the freshman the first day of school, the Mother-Daughter Banquet and Benefit Show, the Magazine Drive, and selling I Have Voted” tags on election day. The money from all these ac- tivities goes toward the scholarship fund. At the end of the year three or four scholarships are given to deserving senior girls who are seriously in- terested in some profession. Boys’ Club, not to be outdone, also has many activities for the boys. They raise money by selling cokes at the school dances and ‘‘get logethers” after the basketball games. This year they were able to buy a new coke machine with the money they made. Also new this year are the cartoons shown in the Student Auditorium during the lunch periods, and for the first time in a few- years the boys are sponsoring a Father-Son Banquet. Boys' Club Found around their new coke machine is the Boys’ Club Board. They arc: Richie Stein, president; Terry Trcgar. treasurer: Bob Benvenuti (seated), vice-president; Mike Pchan. social chairman; Burt Kaplan, secretary. HGA For all you female Tarzans HGA is the answer. But don’t worry if you can hardly lift a baseball bat for you only need twenty points in one semester to get into this club. You get one point every time you go out for an extra- curricular sport such as swimming, table tennis, or hockey. However, HGA is not limited to athletic activities alone. There is a very impressive candlelight ceremony in Janu- ary to initiate new members. In May the Play I)ay is held where new members are initiated and the board for the following year is announced. One of the biggest activities of the year is the Father- Daughter Banquet. The theme this year was “Daddy-O Goes Rodeo. and everyone had a bang-up time. The song contest, which the senior girls won. was the highlight of the evening. This year something new was tried to take some pressure off the poor, hardworking representatives. A skit was presented by a father and daughter from each class as part of the entertainment. Scholarships were also presented at the end of the year. The money for these is earned by selling hot dogs, candy, and pop at the football games, the apple sales after school, and the regular HGA dues. “We won by golly, we won”. That was the cry of the senior girls when they finally won the song contest after coming in second for three years. Page 16 Cheerleaders The cheerleaders, led by Captain Diane True, cheer at ail football and basketball games as well as at many assemblies and pep rallies through- out the year. Varsity Club Varsity Club, formerly known as “H” Club, was changed this year to include only junior and senior letter winners. Although this is an almost all bov organization, our eight varsity cheerleaders keep it from being a monopoly. The boys sell programs at the football and basketball games, as well as the “Little Giant” cushions frem a few years ago. Other projects include waiting on tables at the HGA Father-Daughter Banquet and sponsoring various assemblies throughout the year. This year, as a special event, the Varsity Club opened the athletic facil- ities of the school to the members and their dates for a special Fun Night. It was such a success that these will be continued in following years. Page 47 Garrick Thrsc busy officers must be de- ciding what to do at the next Garrick Club meeting. Although we haven’t discovered any Marlon Brando or James Dean, you never know what hidden talent lies lurking about. If there’s one there, Garrick is sure to discover him. This year The Hitchhiker” was presented as the all-school play. Di- rected by Caroline Millet, it was one of the finest they’ve ever done. Throughout the year the members of Garrick attend plays in Chicago, hear talks by professional actors on various phases of the stage, and work together presenting work-shop plays and dialogues. Crew “Crash, bang! What happened to the lights?” “Oh, it’s nothing serious. Stage Crew is just having a little trouble.” Seriously, Stage Crew is one of the most underestimated organizations in our school. The boys in this club spend a great deal of extra time plan- ning novel and interesting lighting and sound effects for our assemblies, shows, concerts, and operettas, not to mention Student Stunts. One of their outstanding projects this year was the Garrick play in which no scenery was used so everything depended upon the lighting and sound. Through their activities these amateur photog- raphers arc able to learn more about taking pictures and how a camera works. The Photography Club is also responsible for taking pictures for Shoreline and the Little Giant. Science Club “But, kids, you know that hydro- chloric acid and sulfuric acid don’t mix.” That must be Mr. Hanson talk- ing to the Science Club members who arc doing their best to blow up the school. Seriously, however, through this organization interested students are able to prepare for national and state competition for science scholarships and work on individual projects. The students showed such a great interest in this club that the constitution was changed to include unlimited member- ship and there arc now about fifty members. Miss Tcarc is the sponsor. One of their main projects this year was a questionnaire sent to all English classes. In this way the board was able to find out what books and record- ings the students want in the library. In addition, the busy board members help manage the library. Boys' Rifle Club Bull’s Eye!! All of the members also re- ceived Little Giant buttons. Pep Club has done a wonderful job of building up spirit and enthusi- asm in the school in their first year. Absent: Pat Jones, senior class repre- sentative: Nancy Wolff, sophomore class representative; Rona Silverman, freshman class representative. Triad Music Club Triad is another one of our new clubs. It gives all students sincerely in- terested in music a chance to get solo experience. Most of the members arc also in the band, one of the ensembles, or some other musical organization. Triad gives them a chance to practice their music in groups and alone. ■y r v vz Left Top Row: Judy Hitchinson, Phoebe Fabricant. Al Weil. Jim Frank- lin. Joanne Jefferson. Bottom Row: Karen Chcli. Page 51 Pat Floyd Memorial Award The Pat Floyd Memorial Award was established in memory of Pat Floyd who would have graduated in 1951. Every year it is presented to the outstand- ing junior girl who is most like Pat. This girl must fulfill the qualifications for the National Honor .Society and lie in the upper half of her class. Each junior session nominates one girl, and from this list the principal, the deans, and the junior homeroom teachers nominate three girls. These names arc voted upon by the junior class. I ast year Patricia Sheahen, now our Student Council treasurer, was selected. Harvard Book Award In the spring the Harvard Book Club gives the Harvard Book Award to the outstanding junior boy. The selection is made from nominations by the junior boys’ advisers and voted upon by a committee composed of the prin- cipal, the assistant principal, the Dean of Boys, and the junior boys’ advisers. David Rudolph, now president of Student Council, was chosen as the most deserving boy because of his leadership, character and scholarship. National Honor Society This year forty-five seniors were initiated into the National Honor So- ciety. This is the highest recognition a high school student can receive. A maximum of fifteen per cent of the graduating class can be chosen for mem- bership on a basis of scholarship, character, leadership and service. To be eligible a student must rank in the upper third of his class at the end of the junior year. Using a list of these students, the members of the senior class and the faculty vote on leadership and service. The final consi- deration, character, is determined from the character ratings of the homeroom and classroom or activity teachers of the past three years. The final list is compiled by a faculty committee including the principal, assistant principal, deans, guidance director. Student Council adviser, and Girls’ Club and Boys’ Club advisers. The ceremony is one of the most impressive in the school year. Five Honor Society members from previous classes are invited back to officiate. The pins are financed by the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs and presented by the representatives of these organizations. Bottom Row: Barbara Kurtzon, Janet Cushman, Barbara Partlow. Margie Mr Comb. CLASS OF 1957 As class of 1957, we’ve seen our school grow into a well-balanced group with an eye toward the future. Likewise, we seniors have developed — in our sense of responsibility, in our strength of friendship, in our respect for one another. We’ve come to understand ourselves and our class mates more fully, and have learned that there will be special memories of HPHS for each of us. None of our class will forget the good times we’ve had working together under the leadership of Richie Kushen, Mrs. Handberg, Mr. Broming, and the Executive Board, to produce a year of worthwhile events. “Fantasia Arabia” was acclaimed as one of the best Student Stunts in years. Not to be forgotten were the gay music, dancing, and decorations of the Senior Dance. The excitement of graduation built up a great Senior Assembly, and to the final climax, graduation night. These memorable events will always remind us of the fun we’ve had and the fine people we’ve known and loved in our four years at HPHS. Senior Executive Board Discussing Student Stunts is the Senior Executive Board, composed of one representative from each session. Some other projects were the Senior Hop. Senior Assembly and picnic. CLASS OF 1959 Whoops! Move over, up|x rclassmcn, here come the sophomores! If you want energy and spirit, this is the place to look. Here arc just a few of the plans made by the hard-working sophomore executive board; they arc cam- paigning for 1009« sophomore representation at all club, council, and pep meetings; they're planning the greatest Sophomore Assembly and picnic ever held; they arc making a papier-mache model of the “Little Giant” to be displayed at home games. They also challenge the other classes to attain 100% voting registration. It looks like these sophomores arc starting early to show that theirs is the best class ever to come into Highland Park High School! Page 82 Mi A.
