N Mr. Burney Hays Mr. Hays is probablyone of the few people living in Topeka today who can claim to be atrue native. He was born here and has lived most of his life within the city. He received both his Bachelor of Scienceand Master of Science from Kansas State University, and in 1949 he began the first year of a long career at Highland Park High Schoolas an instructorin physical educationand head football coach Mr. Hays cited as his main worry the fear that he would lose contact with the students. He believes that a school adminis- trator whould teach at least one class a day in order to keep contact with each generation of students and know their ideas and hopes. For this reason Mr. Hays has a policy which he calls the open door policy.' Any time he is in the office, he keeps his door open so students can feel free to come in and visit with him or ask his advice on a problem. -18- r. Wendell Godwin Mr. Wendell Godwin, superin- tendent of Topeka schools, was born in Mexico, Indiana. He re- ceived his bachelor of arts de- gree in education from pe Pauw University and his master degree from University of Chicago. Mr. Godwin started out as a teacher and gradually worked his way up to the principalship of a small high school. He later be- came superintendentof Hutchison, Kansas, public schools before he came to the Topeka position in 1951.
