I'l'lll'll:5lI'6ltl0ll A new course Cadet Teachrng was started spring semester for senior students who wanted to become teachers They studred methods for nine weeks then visited classrooms of grade schools the last nine weeks and taught one day a week Construction has begun on a new addrtron to the school at an approximate cost of S593 000 Stu dents were moved from the north side of the bu1ld mg and lunches were modified in the Cafeteria Twenty e1ght classrooms are berng added including a lrttle theater art room and a band room The old band room wrll become an audio v1s1on room An rncrease of 150 students are expected next year and srx more teachers have been hired The office staff 15 composed of Mrs Helen Strnson Mrs Sharon Morrrs and Mrss Barbara Mc Donald Mrs Stinson a graduate of Washburn Uni verslty has been at Hlghland Park since 1942 but has been Regrstrar only this past year She previously taught Enghsh She checks attendance works wrth grades and transcrrpts, and substitute teaches Sharon a graduate of Highland Park IS book keeper for District 10 As the Board of Educatron secretary she handles all money than comes into the office ASSISTING Mr Hines and being primed for his position as principal next year is Mr Barney Hays vice principal and prlnclpalelecf THREE FAMILIAR FACES greet studenix who enter the office. ' , ,JMID i . MISS BETTY LEE BASKETT MR. MERLE W. BODINE English-Social Studies Auto Mechanics, MGIGIS English Miss Betty Lee Baskett, head senior sponsor, grad- uated from Emporia State Teachers' College, receiving a B. S. degree in education. She teaches English and English-Social Studies, and sponsors Knitting Club. New at Highland Park this year is Mr. Merle Bodine, who received his B. S. in education from Emporia State. I-Ie is a junior counselor, sponsor of Hi-Y and Auto Mechanics Club, and teaches auto mechanics and metals. Mr. Francis Carpenter graduated from Kansas State with a B. S. degree, and is now sophomore counselor, sponsor of F. F. A., and Sportsman Club I, and teaches vocational agri- culture. Head counselor for the freshman class is Mrs. Virginia Cleland, who received her A. B. de- gree from Baker. She teaches English and English- Social studies and sponsors the Square Dance Clubs. Another newcomer is Mr. Eugene DeGruson, junior sponsor, sponsor of Spotlight Club and Thespians, and teacher of English, speech, and dramatics. He received his B. S. degree from Kansas University, and in his first year here teaches health and physical education, sponsors the Bowling and Gymnastics clubs and the freshman class, is head baseball coach, and assistant football coach.
