Andres. From that moment when we first wandered through the halls as freshmen until the hour of our graduation, no person or problem has been too small for Andy to notice. He has worked with us, worried with us, laughed with us, and kept us in line. Any success that we have achieved during these last four years has come with his help and encouragement. We shall always be grateful to him. - z , RONALD LEO PLUMMER H930-19483 Ronald is gone -- And with him has gone a bit of all our hearts. Gone is the fire of his spirit, his laugh, and his big, friendly way, Gone is the carefree kindness of his heart. And yet -- and yet -- He is not gone so long as one of us, our children, or our children's children shall live For he has become a part of our beings, a part of our hearts - - And herein lies the key to immortality. 3 I - - - - - THIS AUTOGRAPH PAGE WITH COMPLIMENTS OF BERKSONS v . .JAJ I Q ' U an Ju .mf waves? , NM ill .M Aa, Nav- rf ,,. -f' 0. HINES Principal THE ADMINISTRATION Three men who have had many extra tasks and who have done excellent work are these members of the Highland Park High School Board of Education. Faced by the controversial issue of whether to build a new building and then the question of where, when, and how, these men have done an exceptionally fine iob and are to be com- mended. P Walter J. Hines, Principal of Highland Park High Schqpl, is undoubtedly a man with punch . None will say that our administrator is 'easy, but none will question his results or the esteem in which we hold him. His accomplishments are manyg his smile, wit, and sense of fair play have won for him the highest regard of all of us. JAMES E. SMITH Director J. J. GIES Treasurer PERRY C. ': MARILYN CUSIC Treasurer CLASS OF 1949 Nineteen hundred and forty-five was a big year in the worId's history. The war ended in Germany and in Japan. The war BEGAN in Highland Park High School. We arrived! We, the instigators of many a noble deed and nefarious plot, were making our debuts as freshmen. At first we were greatly overawed by all we saw, but by the time Don Meek and Ronald Plummer had been initiated for the tenth time, we began to get the hang of things. Steadily we advanced in scholarship, athletics, music, dramatics, and just plain chicanery! Ah, and then there was our sophomore year. That, you recall, was the year when Lindsay Gillespie's obsession was drawing circles on Miss Baskett's walls. Not to be satisfied with that, he daintily dropped a lighted match from a second story window, thus starting a whopping big grass fire, much to the delight of his classmates, For a few moments we thought that the building was sure to go! But it didn't!! During the same term Jerry Fisher, when charging like a wounded bull after Bob Diel during football practice, failed to see the goal post looming in his path. He stopped rather abruptly! When he finally came to, he seemed surprised to see the gang bending over him. Upon being asked the date, he replied, Aw, heck, Coach, l wouldn't know that anyway! The entire iunior year seemed to revolve around the prom scheduled for that spring. With our customary fervor, we produced a sensational play in order to raise more money for the Heavenly prom which we demons decided to stage. ln due time the big night rolled around. Interesting sights were Frank Fritts proudly exhibiting an orchid corsage fwith Donna Bledsoe attached? and a formidable stag line featuring .Messrs. Fisher, Horton, and Purdy. ln spite of all the fun we have had in years past, this senior year has been best of all. We'Il always remember Tom Sawyer's impersonations of Jim- my Durante, especially the time his putty nose stuck on the piano keyboard! The year hasn't been all fun, however, School days for many of us will soon be over and all of us have been doing more thinking than in times gone by. ln several fields we have reached a new high, We have set a high goal for the classes which will follow. Burton Harvey, newly appointed mem- ber as orchestra representative from Kansas in the National School Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Associ- ation, this 66-piece band has gained an enviable repu- tation as a concert and marching band, This organization, which has received a First Division r'ating at the district music festival in Law- rence for the past two years, appears at most home football and basketball games., The band has made several trips, including ones to out-of-town football games at Hiawatha and Ottawa and to Band Day at Kansas State College in Manhattan, where the group gave a demonstration in precision marching. Appearing in many parades in this area and in several concerts completed the band's activities for the year. THIS PAGE THROUGH THE COURTESY OF GREEN'S MUSIC SHOP 60 Directed by H. Burton Harvey, the 36-piece or- chestra ranks among the best high school orchestras in the state of Kansas. lt has placed in the First Division at the Lawrence district music festival for the past three years. Catering to the classics, this group offers a broad musical background to interested students. Many members are accomplished instrumental soloists, as is evidenced by the high number of first division ratings earned in the solo divisions of both the district and the state music festivals. The orchestra appears at all of the school plays and presents several concerts each year. Ash, Atherton, M. Barkes, Benson, Bergen, Bledsoe, Boursaw, Chilson, S. Fowler, V. WITH COMPLIMENTS OF H 64 . - e at Fiasr no MANAGERS:W4Sm h' wg Hlghland Park's inexperienced varsity took it on the chin for the first few games before the added experiencebegan to make itself known in the Scotties' teamwork. About mid-season the iinx came in earnest with the injury of a regular tackle and the illness of a regular end, which finished those boys for the season. These, combined with numerous other iniuries of a minor nature, served to keep the battling Highlanders far below par all season. Head Coach Claude Reynolds, starting with a new formation and only one returning regular starter, whipped his squad into a dangerous team before the end of the season even though- the Scots won only one game while losing eight. Even so, the season was certainly not wasted, for the players had an opportunity to become accustomed to their new formation, the short punt, and the new coach and above all the chance to find themselves. All of these things plus the spirit gained by these boys make Highland Park the team to lead in the Jayhawk League next year. IGHLAND PARK MARKET Highland, Park freshmen and sopho- mores, under the able tutelage of Coaches John Merryman and Paul Stone, started Easy in their high school lives to learn foot- a . These inexperienced Scottie Pups fin- h d the ear well versed in football funda- is e y - mentals. Playing a rugged six-game schedule to ut gave the fellows plenty of chances p into practice the techniques taught them by their coaches, Next year several graduates of this beginners' school will be playing with the varsity. Fifty-five freshmen and sophomores finished the season of work and play with- out a serious injury or complaint. The only two beets heard frequently were that the freshmen did not like to carry in the dum- mies Ctackling dummies, that isl and that Dick Tiny Shumway C248 poundsl occas- ionally stepped on one of them. After dropping the first three games, the tall, fast Scotties began to click, amassing a I4 won-9 lost record against some of the finest Class A high schools in the eastern half of the State. Depending primarily on the fast break and a vicious double screen on the offense, the Scots had the rebound- ing and ball-hawking ability to crack down on the de- fense, Of the nine games lost by HPHS, six were lost by three points or fewer.
