In February. l926, the auditorium-gymnasium was com- E ig, pleted. This gave a more adequate assembly place and an opportunity gg E for basket ball. E E gg Then in November, 1926, the new grade building was completed. At E the same time an adequate sewerage disposal plant was constructed and lg numerous improvements made to the High School and the grounds. The Q E, new grade building is unique in this section. lt is of the California bunga- E 5 low type with one story and no basement. The modern system of light- lil ing and inside arrangements have been carried out and Highland Park now has a grade building of ten rooms which ranks with the best. The build- El ing faces a court with no exits on the streets. This gives a maximum of 'E safety and convenience in handling the children. The welfare of the E E child was the chief thingconsidered in the design and construction of the E E new building. Slate blackboards, unilateral lighting, and the best of E E ' seating are among the items included. gl E Thos. W. Williamson and Co. designed the new building and The gg E Stimson Construction Co. built it. Geo. W. Sutherin and Sons did the E E plumbing and heating work: and the A. Tucker Electric Co. did the wir- lg ing and lighting work. E The seating and general furnishing of the building was handled by E The Peabody School Furniture Co. 'The work of this firm did much to E E make an attractive interior to our building. Now, having arrived, we are ,gl EI sorry that we must leave. Happy days, full of useful work and Joyful play lil E' - have been our experience in High School life. The sympathy and help of our E lg teachers will remain with us as one of the outstanding features of education. E E Being a peppy class, we have always had a good social time. The burden of E 53 the three past years work has been lightened with frequent parties and get ggi lg togethers that have always been well attended. This year, being our last, E E has been the best. Seldom has a class enjoyed such Whole hearted fun. Our enthusiasm is very thorough, so we are represented on the entire round gl of school activities. Especially do we shine in Athletics. The Football team gave splendid results under the guidance of John Bessant. He was reenforced Q by Johnson, Lewis, Nelson, Wettengel and Calderwood. Again, on the El Basket Ball court we were ably represented by Royer, Lewis, Wettengel, Cal- if lg derwood and Bessant. The boys have had to share their honors this year with E ig the girls. Joy Reynolds has the honor of being the captain of the Ciirls' gi Basket Ball team that won the State Sportsmanship Trophy. Joy did not EE EE play the games by herself though. Her team-mates from our class were Cross, E and Bloch. We are very proud of them. E E In the finer arts the Seniors also make a good showing. In the Glee Clubs E the Class is represented by four girls and four boys. Juanita McKelvey and E Alfred McNemar represented H. P. in the County Music Contest by singing lil Contralto and Baritone solos, respectively. In the Dramatic Club we were IZ found, Reynolds, Siegfried, McKelvey and Wilder being our representatives. S E E lg And lastly but not least, is the Senior Play, The Road to the City, with E E John Bessant and Mabel Bloch in the leading roles. The story is of a young E gi girl who confuses true love with wealth and position. She realizes her mistake Q lg when it seems almost too late. After she has committed a deed that will E E darken her whole life, she awakens to find that it has been a dream. She then E 131 marries the man she really loves and the villain gets his just dues. C lass Sponsor Three years ago, in September, we first entered these halls of learning. We soon adapted ourselves to the new system and took up the serious business ol being educated. Now We are Juniors and Rudolph Ketcherside reigns supreme with the honor of Junior President. Others may question the ability and talents of this re- markable group, but the members themselves entertain no doubts. Our class has contributed the following persons to school organizations: Martha Mills, Jesse Hassebroek, Sylvia Sassman, Goldie Ketcherside, Emma Eberhart, and Irene Roller to the Girls' Glee Club: Karl Root, Matthew Ever- ist, Rudolph Ketcherside, Garfield Richard and Louise Thompson to the Dra- matic Club: Sylvia Sassman. Fern Wylie, Jessie Hassebroek and Louise Thomp- son upheld our colors in Girls' Basket Ball. Sylvia Sassman took second place in the state contest for free throwing. Vern Brunton played on the boys' squad: William Bergman, Vern Brunton and Sims Thompson played football. Mildred Petty, Sylvia Sassman, Robert Eakins, Henry Dennis, Louise Thomp- son, Lenora Thomas, Warren Boast and Zella Roller were members of the Spanish Club organized last fall. Warren Boast played in the orchestra and was also chosen as Junior Representative in the Student Senate. Irene Roller was accompanist of the Girls' Glee Club and also Assistant Editor of the An- nual, and Karl Root was Assistant Business Manager. Our class gave a rummage sale in Topeka to help raise money for the Junior and Senior Banquet. We also sold tickets at certain programs and plays at the school for the same purpose. Next year we hope to fill the exalted position of Seniors in such a way that it will be a credit to Highland Park. Miss Oliver, our coach, led us along the ways of dramatic art through the slough of mediocrity, to the heights of fame. Our plays have been few, but we feel that they have been worth the effort and that the patrons of the school have en- joyed them. The first play, Believe Me Xantippef' was given January 28, l927. The story was of a young New York man, George MacFarland, who bet Sole, a detective, and Brown, a young Lawyer, that he could commit a crime and escape the law for one year. His adventures finally brought him to the little cabin of Dolly Kammon, daughter of the sheriff. Dolly discovered who he was and took him to her fathers jail under arrest. Dolly was then made deputy by her father, but when the last day arrived the men came to collect their bet, they discovered that Dolly, not having been deputy before could not legally have made the arrest. When the play closed we were assured that the true lovers, Dolly and MacFarland, would be happily married, CHARACTERS ' George MacFarland ,.,.,......,..,,.,.........,,.,,....... ..,.., T rulan Wilder Simp Calloway ,.......,, ...,..,,,..,..,,..,,...,.. .4..4....,..
