Basketball Team Wins Big The 1984-1985 Varsity Basketball team enjoyed a suc- cessful season. Under new head coach Tom Shelton, the Scots went 26-6 for the season. The Scots started off the season defeating such notable op- ponents as Denton, Berkner, Lake Highlands, Richardson, and L. D. Bell. The round- ballers won the Scot Classic and the Austin Invitational Tournament, beating several of Austin's best teams. The Scots went 17-0 until they met na- tionally ranked Baltimore Dun- bar in the finals of the Fort Worth West Side Lions Club Tournament. The Scots ended up district play with a 9-5 record. District 9-5A was considered one of the toughest districts in the state and the Scots defeated every team at least once except South Garland. Another one of the many highlights of the season was the defeat of the Hutch and previously undefeated Garland. The Scots defeated the Eagles for the first time in 10 years. This year's team was con- sidered one of the best to come through Highland Park. The group was made up of many talented seniors. The starting line-up included Seniors Stephen White, Tie Sosnowski, David Humann, Malcolm Showalter, and Glen Mack. Other contributing seniors in- cluded Scott Davis, Mike Mc- Cartin, and Chuck Peters. Underclassmen Scott Brock, Thomas Hocker, Lex Mat- thews, Linsay Brown, Wes Boyd, John Isakson, and Matt Baynham also contributed to the strong bench. 200 SPORTS DAY

Freshman football full of talent The freshman football A team ended its outstanding season with a 6-3 record. After 2 pre-district losses, the team came on strong with a 6-1 record in district. Their only loss came to a .strong North Garland team. The young Scots finished the district season se- cond overall. The team was led by captains Hil Bowman, Casey Clyce, Preston Leon, Blair Pogue, Scott Shere, and Jack Sides. Coaches Cecil Holmes, Al Hawes, and Richard Bohac coached the team. The leading A team rusher for the year was Leon with 1,089 yards in 92 carries for 13 touchdowns. Sides ran for over 400 yards. Clyce, as quarter- back, completed 50' of his passes for 9 touchdowns. Philip Simpkins caught 7 touchdowns passes. Sherer led the defense with 105 tackles. The B team finished a disappointing season with a 3-5 season record. Two of its wins came as a result of forfeits, and the other came in a victory over South Garland. Paul Ferris, Angie Laros, Matt Luedtke, and Derek Moore were among some of the players who greatly contributed to the team. Runlz Casey Clyce hands off to Preston Leon. SPORTS DAY 199
