DEBBIE EULICH, Diane Marsh, and Sharon White ponder high school problems at orientation. Scots Enjoy Summer Employment In Volunteer Work, Foreign Study As another school year endediandi E long-awaited summer advanced, Scots. contemplated how best to till the coming months ot tree time. Eight HP students, sponsored by the American Institute tor Foreign Study, spent six weelcs ot travel and study in Eu- rope. Kathe Young, one ot 900 students sent abroad each year by APS, experi- enced a new culture during her two- month stay with a Filipino tamily. A prize- winning essay earned its writer, Tim Hughes, 22 days ot touring -Europe. Many students volunteered tive days a week tor OLE, a church-sponsored sum- mer recreation program tor under-privi- leged children. Toy Ladies Sue Born- stein, lvlaribeth Koons, Roberta Rhea, and Patty Simone pushed carts tull ot I4 0 Summer playthings and boolcs at Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital. Student Council President Dan Yoder and other otticers and council represent- atives trom HP attended the TASC worlc- shop at SIVIU this summer. With students trom ditterent parts ot Texas, these Scots learned how to lead a student body. The intormative weelc ended on Awards Night, when Laura Sears received the award tor Outstanding Workshopper. Band classes, a new addition to summer school, met tor the tirst time this year. Band students toolc part in class lessons trom eight to twelve and in private in- struction outside summer school hours. The most popular courses talcen by the 368 summer school students were typing and American government. -- ,W , 3. KAR D. D. Mi ex RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING on the heads ot Nancy Maiden and Scott Brown as they watch with enthus asm h Ie the Scots cage the I ng Tigers Football Pep Rallies, Howdy Week Add Color to September Activities Highland Park took on a new atmo- sphere with the addition ot the treshman class in September. However, new roonn numbering and newly-installed direction signs kept contusion to a minimum. Geared to treshmen and sophomores, I-Iowdy Week gave students a chance to meet upperclassmen. The annual I-lowdy Dance, held atter the tirst Scot tootball game. provided entertainment climaxed by the announcement ot the I-Iowdy Lads. Kirk Dooley and David Burgher, and the I-Iowdy Lassies, Marianne Windrow and Becky Dickenson. Spirit reached a peak in September when the Scot tootball team won the tirst tour games ot the season. The Spirit Committee, with a membership ot 7I, prompted enthusiasm by selling buttons and bumper stickers. I6 0 September At the tirst meeting, I-Ii-Lite otticers began the new year with a song and dance skit teaturing tunes trom lil-Iello. Dollyii and Mame. Mothers and daugh- ters ate cookies and drank punch while getting acquainted at the I-Ii-Lite tea on September 27. Members ot the Lads and Lassies choir came dressed as tamous movie stars to the picnic held at Wintrey Point. The ore chestra, band. and I-Iighlandaires choir initiated new members at picnics. As the result ot tests taken last spring, the National Merit board named ten sen- iors as Semitinalists. Chosen tor their high scores in the categories ot math, English, and science. those students were eligible tor the tinals. Eighteen other students re- ceived National Merit Letters ot Com- mendation trom the board.
