Scots Enjoy Summer Employment In Volunteer Work, Foreign Study As another school year endediandi E long-awaited summer advanced, Scots. contemplated how best to till the coming months ot tree time. Eight HP students, sponsored by the American Institute tor Foreign Study, spent six weelcs ot travel and study in Eu- rope. Kathe Young, one ot 900 students sent abroad each year by APS, experi- enced a new culture during her two- month stay with a Filipino tamily. A prize- winning essay earned its writer, Tim Hughes, 22 days ot touring -Europe. Many students volunteered tive days a week tor OLE, a church-sponsored sum- mer recreation program tor under-privi- leged children. Toy Ladies Sue Born- stein, lvlaribeth Koons, Roberta Rhea, and Patty Simone pushed carts tull ot I4 0 Summer playthings and boolcs at Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital. Student Council President Dan Yoder and other otticers and council represent- atives trom HP attended the TASC worlc- shop at SIVIU this summer. With students trom ditterent parts ot Texas, these Scots learned how to lead a student body. The intormative weelc ended on Awards Night, when Laura Sears received the award tor Outstanding Workshopper. Band classes, a new addition to summer school, met tor the tirst time this year. Band students toolc part in class lessons trom eight to twelve and in private in- struction outside summer school hours.
