Page Four This is our school. It has its joys and sorrows, its comedy and tragedy. In a play the scenery must be set up before the curtain opens, and the actors must memorize and re- hearse their parts before opening night. As in every school Highland Park has behind the scenes events which we scarcely if ever stop to recognize. A few moments of thought will remind us of these backstage episodes which may now seem quite small and unimportant to us. The football player who made the sixty-yard touchdown in that all-important game put in some extra-hard practice sessions. The bus and train caravans which we so spiritedly joined had to be planned and prepared for days ahead of time by a group of conscientious people. After the dances we never thought of the afternoons of preparation that were spent on the decorations that we so joyously tore down. Hours of shining brass and sewing on patches preceded the day of an R.O.T.C. inspection. How many of us considered the many early-morning practices that Went into a musical program? What about the study hall periods that were spent by student artists preparing scenery and decorations for senior plays and pep rallies? Closer to home was the year-round job of putting out a yearbook and newspaper. Most important and best spent of all was the time we put into our studies, the extra time that meant the difference between us passing courses and achieving an education in its fullest sense. So many everyday occurrences like these have played such an important part in our Hi Park years that in the 1957 Highlander we are proud to pay tribute to that side of our school life that continues to remain behind the scenes. THE 1957 HIGHLANDER STAFF

When a teacher can be found who has a rare combination of wit and teaching ability, that teacher always lives in the minds of his pupils as a source of inspira- tion. Such a combination can be found in a man whom we respect both as a math teacher and a friend. For this reason the 1957 Highlander is dedicated to you, MR. BRUCE QIEFFERS. Page Five
