That is a problem . . faced by almost every driver sooner or later. Students of Highland Park safety education classes, unlike many other drivers, learn how to cope with this problem. Even more practical are the rules of good driving and politeness on the road taught to aspiring student drivers. As the cars of the safety education class roar off into the distance, one can hear familiar sounds coming from the two gyms. The gyms form an important part of our school life. In- cluded in this part of our daily program is an intramural program for the girls and a team line-up for the boys. About midway between the two gyms is the armory. Now just how many of us can put a rifle together? This is a routine problem for our R.O.T.C. Even more familiar to us is the dron- ing Hup 2, 3, 4, Hup 2, 3, 4 of the company commander as another class of cadets is marched outside for a period of drill instruction. Drills, tactics, marksmanship, and map-reading-all are taught as a regular phase of the R.O.T.C. train- ing schedule in an effort to produce leaders better fitted to assume responsibility in the future years of America. The department includes courses in the following subjects: civics, the study of governmentg economics, dealing with the nation's economic lsystemg American and world history, courses concerned with national and international affairs of the past and present. Each subject has special activities. Economics students are favored with several field trips per year to banks and business concerns throughout the city. In order to make more clear the prob- lems of government, qivics students enact the basic governmental offices. Twice a year the Hi Park library undergoes a change of atmos- phere when throngs oflAmerican history pupils settle down to their term theme toil. Separate from the social science department yet related to it because of their concern with human affairs are the psychology courses offered as electives to upperclassmen. l l l l 1 i r l i i 1

Art students at Hi Park can be found dabhling in water colors or making huge murals to hang in the halls. The two-dimensional art of the art classes becomes three-dimensional in the metal shop Where everything from knives to elaborate wrought-iron grill work is made from hard metal. I For those whogdo not like to work with any- thing as unwieldy as metal, Hi Park has a well- equipped woodshop. jewel boxes, water skiis, and gun chests are just a few of the many popu- lar items that students turn out each year in the woodworking classes.
