Physics ' BUNSEN BURNERS AND FROGS Curiosity killed the cat, but it is the driving force behind Hi Park science students as they seek to uncover the secrets of science and nature. Responding to the urgent national call for scientists, Hi Park trained 575 students in science classes this year. Taking the science spotlight in October was a series of lectures presented by Mr. D. C. Evans from the Oak Ridge Tennessee Laboratories. These lectures explained basic processes behind solar energy, space travel, power reactors and use of isotopes. Outside projects are included in all the science classes. Physicists prepare reports on atomic energy, chemists try their hand at experiments, and biologists are found in the most peculiar places obtaining material for their leaf and in- sect collections. XVould you like to add flavor to your everyday vocabu- lary? It can easily be varied with quips and quo- tations from one or more of the three foreign languages offered at Hi Park. Four years of Spanish and Latin are offered and three years of French. The combined enrollment for Spanish, French, and Latin totals over 760 students. The Spanish department has the most pupils although French and Latin are gaining popularity every year. In our language classes Scots are introduced to some of literatures masterpieces such as Ver- gil's Aerzeid. Pronunciation and grammar are stressed by both written practice and oral drill. Students also learn valuable historic facts and daily customs of the country from which their chosen language originally came. In Memoriam: MRS. LAWRENCE ROLLINS Librarian, Teacher of Englirh and Latin june 3, 1956

The department includes courses in the following subjects: civics, the study of governmentg economics, dealing with the nation's economic lsystemg American and world history, courses concerned with national and international affairs of the past and present. Each subject has special activities. Economics students are favored with several field trips per year to banks and business concerns throughout the city. In order to make more clear the prob- lems of government, qivics students enact the basic governmental offices. Twice a year the Hi Park library undergoes a change of atmos- phere when throngs oflAmerican history pupils settle down to their term theme toil. Separate from the social science department yet related to it because of their concern with human affairs are the psychology courses offered as electives to upperclassmen. l l l l 1 i r l i i 1
