Twelve outstanding math teachers equal one superior math department. Illustrating the quality of Hi Park's math department are the five Scot vic- tories in the last seven Hockaday mathematics tournaments. High schools are invited from all over Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana to par- ticipate in this tournament, which is only one of the activities in the department's schedule. Each semester diagnostic tests are given to all pupils. The purpose of these tests is to determine student strengths and weaknesses in the math fundamentals. In addition to the regular mathematics courses Math 8X, a specialized course in calculus, analy- tical geometry, and algebra, is offered to those seniors who wish to gain further preparation for college mathematics. 1

PARTICIPLES AND PRONOUN S Reading, 'riting, and rehearsing are the three r's of our English, journalism and speech de- partments. Improvement in reading comprehen- sion and speed is an aim of the English teachers. Literature and grammar studies round out a balanced English program. Effective writing in newspaper style is fea- tured in journalism classes. The Bagpipe, Hi Park's newspaper, provides a laboratory work- shop for the students. The goals reached by constant rehearsing in the speech classes are poise, diction, and tonal quality. Students study the fundamentals of direction and production as well as the tech- niques of good acting. Page Twelve

XVould you like to add flavor to your everyday vocabu- lary? It can easily be varied with quips and quo- tations from one or more of the three foreign languages offered at Hi Park. Four years of Spanish and Latin are offered and three years of French. The combined enrollment for Spanish, French, and Latin totals over 760 students. The Spanish department has the most pupils although French and Latin are gaining popularity every year. In our language classes Scots are introduced to some of literatures masterpieces such as Ver- gil's Aerzeid. Pronunciation and grammar are stressed by both written practice and oral drill. Students also learn valuable historic facts and daily customs of the country from which their chosen language originally came. In Memoriam: MRS. LAWRENCE ROLLINS Librarian, Teacher of Englirh and Latin june 3, 1956
