His name is Sandy MacTavish. Sandy, though a purely mythical character, is as real as any wide-eyed sophomore or sophisticated senior because he is a representative of all of them. He is a star athlete and a mere manager, an A+ student and barely passing, a favorite and just one of the boys. He is all these and more. He is a Highland Park Scot. ewad Couple Editor-in-Chief Cong hgaer Business Manager Page Four we dedicate.... This year the seniors have chosen to dedicate their HIGHLANDER to a woman who for the past ten years has been the friend of every student with who she has come in contact. She came to Highland Park in the fall of 1945 to teach English and history. Because of her unselfish and genuine interest in her students she has become one of the most well-liked members of the faculty. It is with greatest affection that we dedicate the 1955 HIGHLANDER to MISS GLADYS SITZ. Because of his friendly personality and the great interest he took in all our activities, Mr. Monroe has within a year en- deared himself to all the students and faculty members of the Highland Park School District. Mr. Monroe was born in Hood County, Texas. He was graduated from high school at Canyon and entered West Texas State College, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree. While at West Texas State he also played basketball. The year after he was graduated, he began teaching at a school in Friona, Texas and later at Pampa. In the summer of these years he took post-graduate work at the University of Missouri and the Colorado State College of Education, where he gained his Master’s degree. Later he studied further at the University of Texas and Columbia University. In 1941 Mr. Monroe went to Midland High School, where he remained for thirteen years as a principal and superintendent before coming to us in 1954. Page Eight A. H. WISEMAN Principal, Highland Park High School For more than a quarter of a century Mr. Wiseman has been the capable and understanding principal of Highland Park High School. Much of the credit for Highland Park’s high standards and achievements may be attributed to his efforts. C. D. BOWLBY Vice-Principal, Highland Park High School GRACE GILLON Registrar PRINCESS MARTIN Counselor CARRIE INMON Counselor CLYDE JACKSON President, Park Cities Dads’ Club : MRS. DAN C. WILLIAMS President, Parent-Teachers Association Page Twelve : Grapuates of Highland Park High School carry on a proud tradition. Rea- sons for both pride and tradition may be found in the community which provides our support and our students. Since 1922 this high school has served the people who make their homes in Highland Park and University Park because they wish to enjoy living in a community of well-educated persons. The United States cen- sus figures show, incidentally, that these two small cities are among the top eight best-educated communities in the nation. In a recent school survey the parents of 70 percent of the student body were found to have some college education. The jobs of four out of five of the fathers are professional, managerial, or executive. Because this community believes in the value of education, the boys and girls of Highland Park School expect to make the most of their studies in high school and beyond. Last year 360 out of 371, 97 percent of the graduating seniors, en- rolled in 17 colleges in Texas, 52 in other states. Most of these collegians over the years reflect credit on their school. At Southern Methodist University last spring, for instance, six of the 18 persons elected to Phi Beta Kappa were Highland Park graduates. Success stories from campuses across the nation inspire present High- landers to work hard and prepare themselves to do a good job too. Teachers at Highland Park are an experienced group of highly professional people. Three out of four have M.A. degrees. It is a challenge to this faculty to provide top-notch learning experiences for the students in this school, both in the class room and in the various activities. Be- cause these boys and girls may be expected to become leaders tomorrow as their parents are today, it is of the utmost importance to help each one achieve his very best potential in academic work and in citizenship. That best is very good indeed. And our country these days can be satisfied with nothing less. In the tryouts Robert Blackwell, Charles Otstott, Mary Lane Sensabaugh, and Edith Snoots captured lead parts, and other major roles were taken by Sheila Kaufman, Tommy Bywaters, Kay Hughes, and James Carter. But those who did not get parts put their talents to work in other ways. Success of the play would have been doubtful without cooperation from the backstage crew, but, all working together under the hand of their director, Porter Crow, the January class of ‘55 put on a fine performance. The cast takes time out to laugh at one of the humorous scenes. Sheila and Robert can’t seem to say good bye as he leaves for the fair. IUIVUUUUIUUUUTULUUUUEALUTHLIITHHI babes in toyla ra CHMMIINIIINVUUNUUUUUUUAUUU0U0000000001 Babes in Toyland, written by Victor Herbert and directed by Miss Flora Lee Pope, was the spring operetta this year. Besides sing- ing, there were many other things which went toward making it a successful performance. Miss Nan- cy Dial and her retinue of artists provided scenery and props. Miss Helen Moore helped with the dra- matics of the show, and the Scot orchestra, under the baton of Mrs. Clay Griffith, gave a fine back- ground for the Lads and Lassies singers. The story, a delightful fantasy, was unfolded as _ Bill Whitehead, Mary Martha Gibson, Gene Mathews, and Frances Tims took the lead parts. After com- plicated difficulties, the plot ended leaving both the members of the cast and the audience in happy, high spirits. The cast as well as the audience are pleased at the happy ending. For this reason Highland Park High School has maintained a fine sports de- partment and program for girls. This program in- cludes all types of exercises, sports, and dances which aid in the building of good posture and co- ordination as well as good sportsmanship and character. Regular gym classes are held each period of the day in which instruction is given in a variety of sports, including tenniquoits, speedball, and bas- ketball in the fall and volleyball, softball, bad- mitton and tennis in the spring. After a short in- struction period teams are chosen to compete in the different sports for the rest of the time. Other well known parts of the program are the exercises performed to the rythmic beat of the tom- tom and square dancing. Page One Hundred Forty-two To give the girls an added incentive to win, an all-star team of each gym class is chosen at the end of the playing period of each sport. The all-star team of each gym class plays the other all-star teams until a winner is chosen. At the same time the winning teams of each class are playing among themselves, and the winner of this series plays the all-star team for the final championship. A separate program is that of the intramural sports. Girls organize teams to play in one of two leagues, Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thurs- day. In this intramural series six sports are played: tenniquoits, ping-pong, basketball, volleyball, bad- mitton, and softball. All games are played after school and medals are given to girls who partici- pate in each sport and are absent no more than once.
