What will remain with us many years after we ourselves have been forgotten? Lessons learned from our teachers, our books, and our friends? Ideals of scholarship, citizenship, and human relations? These things, of course, but what about all the other things that help make Highland Park the great school that it is? Won't we all remember the pep rallies on Thursday morn- ing, dances after the football games, the great Scot Spirit, Attention to the morning announcements, the excitement of spring elections, the nervous preparation for the first ROTC parade, and the final, unforgettable thrill of graduation? We will remember, for these are the things that make Our School Life. ORCHESTRA Ability, eagerness, and hard work was the theme of the 1953-'54 Orchestra. They have had numerous interesting projects and pro- grams this year. Fall activities included a group trip to the Fair, and a performance for the T. S. T. A. clin- ner at the Baker Hotel, and the official open- ing of Armstrong Elementary School. One of their prettiest performances was a Christmas program December 15. The yearly all-state orchestra was held in Dallas this year rather than in Galveston. Hi Park orchestra members participated as usual. The Spring concert was the highlight of the orchestra this year. Selected students each year anticipate with enthusiasm the Operetta, which demands ex- ceptional and varied musical production tech- niques. .. - 11 Ag. . THE 7953 SEASON The afternoon of Thanksgiving Day, 1953, marked the close of another Scot football season. The Avalanche had no spectacular year of glorious wins and praise, and the records hold no great credit for the Scots of '53, fumbles, and costly errors plagued the season and played a leading role in holding back the team. This record might seem unimpressive to an average reader, a reader who didn't know about Scottie tradition and spirit, but let us read between the lines as we review the grid season. The work began near the middle of August. Twice a day the boys would meet at the school to begin a rigid training schedule. For two weeks they worked in shorts until September, when pads went on and the head-knocking began. School started on September 9, and the team departed for Abilene two days later. The same evening Highland Park fielded the most uninexperienced team they had had in years. They fumbled, they made mistakes . . . they had most of the breaks against thernand couldn't capitalize on Page One Hundred Twenty-.fix the ones they got. Abilene took the non-district tilt, 28-13, wi Richard Howell and Jete Jeter looking good on both offense a r defense. A week later the Scots met Sunset at Dal-Hi Stadium. Again erro and bad breaks set in and the Bison single-wing bested the hon boys, 'I9-0. They couldn't seem to get rolling although Weber a 1 fl White copped high praise for outstanding play. The next week, the Scots made history in the hearts of all wl' saw them play Lubbock. The defending state champs couldn't go an' where against the team that didn't believe they could be beate Magnificent line play and a hard-hitting backfield stunned the Wes erners, but they edged a stubborn Blue and Gold eleven in the fin period, T3-9. The fumbleitis iinx held again as the Scots fielded against Odessn The first half was theirs, but in the last, the Scots looked like a ba club. Bowers came to look in form second to none, with Griffiths an lRST ROW: Halfback Jim Faulk picks up some Scot blocking. Diamond Jim Faulk scampers through the line and heads for the wide open spaces. uulk punching the Bronco line and stopping them on defense. How- fer, it was too late a start as the Broncos won, 34-21. The evening of October 9 was the gloomiest of the year for the valanche. No one could do anything right. Three consecutive kick- ifs to the Scots were fumbled, and Arlington Heights scored three -onsecutive times. On the first play the Scots had the ball, Faulk went tr a touchdown. Three more touchdown plays were called back ong with several long runs. Griffiths managed to get across for e second score. Penalties and fumbles again held them down. Final ore, 42-12. Paschal stunned the Scots the following week, 33-14. lt seemed s if they would never get rolling. Joe Miller and Tom Moore did rn in exceptional performances in the line. October 30 marked the opening of District play, and the Cinderella nys began to play ball. An over-confident Tyler team that had run -fer Sunset and Arlington Heights fell to a team that wouldn't be aten. Gibson, Blocker, and Sparrow showed up splendidly for the ots. They finally hit their stride in the one that counted. Kilgore came to Scotland only to break its unbeaten streak. Lair, SECOND ROW: Bill White and Company make a hole in the line for the Scot backfield. Syd Carter, face mask and all, is hauled clown by a Tyler Lion. Singleton, and Adamson were standouts in this game which the Scots stole, 14-7. The next week-end, Friday the thirteenth, the Waco Tigers shat- tered some pretty bright dreams at Highland Park. District play proved to be an unlucky one for the Scots. Waco led 6-O in the first halt, and the tiring Avalanche came back in the second with Carter, Crum, and Paternostro leading. A costly Tiger tumble in the last quarter gave the Blue and Gold a first on their own 15, and they pushed down to the Bengal five. Then the old iinx crept back. They fumbled as Waco promptly recovered and marched against us to another score as the gun sounded, and went down as a 13-0 count. The Scots on the field Thanksgiving Day with their hearts set and minds up to beat Wichita Falls. Again they fumbled, made mise takes, and got penalties, and Wichita Falls passed. Stout and Novak stood out for the Scots. Until that final whistle on Thanksgiving Day the Scots of 1953 never quit giving it all they had. They fumbled and made mistakes, but they never gave up, and they had the great support, teamwork, and spirit that are traditions at Highland Park. Page One Hlmdred Tzvwm-eight BASKETBALL Although the 1954 Scot basketball team did not score an impressive record, every member of the team enioyed the season under the fine leadership of Coach Ralph Bin- nion. Each member of the team had the satisfaction of knowing that he tried his best. Throughout the season the Scot scoring attack was led by All-District Wade Smith. John Duckett's and Bob Viets' ball-hawking off the back- boards as well as fine defensive play by Joe Leidolf and Arch Beasley were also important factors in the season. Bill Bowers, Tommy Sparrow, John Sharpe, Brooks Patrick, and reserves Rae Hendrix, Olan Hankins, and Tom Gray deserve a salute. Their fine participation proved that a basketball team can't go with iust five men. Even though the 1954 team may not be remembered for its number of wins, it will be remembered for that tradi- tional Scot spirit and good sportsmanship. GI RLS' SPORTS How do you get to the girls' gym? a stranger asks you. Well, go down this hall and, uh -that is, you go to the second corner and-oh, just follow the shouts and shrill screams, you answer, thinking, l'll bet she was bringing a clean gym suitto her daughter. As she reaches the gym, she finds the girls throwing a rubber ring back and forth across a net in a game known as tenniquoits. Looking out the gym office win- dow, she sees another group of girls, hot and tired, coming in from a rousing game of speedball. This sport is a mixture of football, basketball, and soccer. lt is a major accomplishment to get through the fall term without bruised legs or broken fingernails. The mother learns from Miss Watson and Miss Mur- chison that the girls will have four weeks of exercises a little later in the season. These exercises, performed to the beat of a tom-tom are aids to posture and co- ordination. The characteristic of these four weeks is sore muscles. The last sport of the first semester is basketball. The girls spend two or three weeks working on funda- mentals before actually playing any games. The second term starts off with volleyball. This game is played for six weeks. It is followed by four weeks Page One Hnmfren' Forfgi'-four of square dancing. Each girl has the same partner through the entire time. They dance to the music o' records with calls. At the end of the time the girls have a test on all the dances that they have learned. For the rest of the spring semester the girls pla softball and badminton. Four teams go outside whil the other two stay in and battle with the birdies. The climax to all this training is the fun of partici pating in intramural sports. These are open to anyone who is interested enough to get up a team or join one This activity consists of playing after school on Mon day and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday foi the season of that sport. A championship playoff i held between the league winners in each sport. Rivalr and team spirit run high between the leagues. An girl who participates in each intramural sport and i not absent more than once in each one can win a intramural sports award. Members of the champion ship team in each sport are eligible to attend th annual spring luncheon and have their pictures in th Highlander. We would like to take this opportunity to than Miss Watson and Miss Murchison for their helpfulnes and understanding. These eight regiments are all under the able command of Major Lloyd A. Brown, Professor ot Military Science and Tactics. The Highland Park unit does not only broaden the knowledge ot the individual in military tactics, but it also teaches him dis- cipline and leadership. Perhaps the main reason that our corps is so highly rated is the spirit and the ambition ot the cadets to be on top. As a part of the ROTC unit the band marches in the weekly military parades. Throughout the year it participates in various concerts and all members enter on ensemble contest in January. During gridiron days the band gives us a musical lift by spark- ing the cheers at pep rallies and entertaining the fans at game time. For the first time this year the band highlighted its busy sched- ule with a three-clay trip to the Tri-State Music Festival in Enid, Oklahoma, during May. An annual banquet at the end of the year features the award- ing of letters. This honor is earned by only the most outstanding bond members on a strict point basis.
