Just before the turn of the twentieth century came one of these periods full of fun, gaiety, and excitement known as the “Gay Nineties”. We, the Highlander staff, wish to show you our idea of a contrast of life during the “Gay Nineties” and life in the 1950’s. Sis Vache Business Manager Page Four This year we honor one who has been a leader in the classroom and in sports. His thoroughness as a teacher is relieved by his quick wit and good sense of humor. We, the Senior Class, wish to dedicate The Highlander of 1952 to C. H. Marshall. Page Five In the “Gay Nineties”, the typical schoolmarm taught the daily quotation by the hickory pointer, Familiar sight in our day is the parade of the teacher signing in, CIt7rattou rAdméu Page Eight Within the walls of Highland Park The halls of learning are not dark. Bright has been the lamp of knowledge, May it make us bright in college! We've had our gay days bright with laughter, Times we'll think of long years after. But now, all | can say (in rhyme) Is “Thanks, High Park, for a wonderful time.” — Smilin’ Sam, ‘52 | THE W. PERRY McPHERSON Vice-President and Finance Officer A, SIDNEY BRIGGS DR. JOHN CHAPMAN A. H. With only one returning starter, the Scots fielded a light, fast, and inexperienced eleven. Also new this year was head coach G. B. Morris and his two assistants, C. Q. Smith and Dan Williams. The Scots were placed with a tough new district 5AAAA with Tyler, Sherman, Denison, Tex- arkana, Waco, ahd Wichita Falls. The Scots ended with four wins, five losses, and one tie. No, no, mustn’t touch! WILDCATS SURPRISE HI PARK 18-0 An underrated Woodrow Wilson eleven used its weight to ad- | vantage on the muddy field at Dal-Hi Stadium. The light, air-minded Scot team found it hard to control passes or maintain footing. Stand- | outs for the Scots were Don Alexander, Jay Fikes, John Beasley, and Ken Hempel. PASCHAL PANTHERS STUN SCOTS 32-14 Passes from Dee Norton to John Beasley and Johnny Berke respec- tively accounted for the Avalanche’s 14 points. Hughes-to-Cozart passes for Paschal managed to give the Panthers Fort Worth’s first win over the Blue and Gold in years. This was also the first time in two years Hi Park had lost two consecutive grid tilts. | Page One Hundred Eightecn Beasley Fikes Manfield Back End Back G. DENISON DEADLOCKS THE AVALANCHE ON LATE RUN 6-6 On a water-soaked grid, the Denison Yellowjackets knotted the count late in the fourth period with a 62-yard run and tied the Scots 6-6. The. mud again proved Hi Park’s undoing as fumbles marred the play. A pass from Don Alexander to George Reynolds gave the Scots their only score. Berke scampers a little father with the aid of a block by Fikes. CLAN CRUSHES FOREST 26-0 At last hitting their stride, the Scots added another game to their home field winning streak, subduing the Lions 26-0 before 4,500 fans. eee eee ee ee aaa... The forward wall, pushed by Bill Belcher, Jay Fikes, and Jim Groves, held Forest in check while Don Alexander, John Beasley, Ken Hempel, George Reynolds, and Chuck Mansfield provided the yardage and points. KILTIES SMOTHER TYLER 26-0 With Don Alexander completing 11 out of 15 pass attempts, Jay Fikes snagging aerials, and Ken Hempel powering through the line, the Scots sparkled at Highland Field to spill Tyler, 26-0. SCOTS SUCCUMB TO TEXARKANA 34-18 Our second district encounter found the Plaid Clan tangling with the Texarkana Tigers. Though tallies were contributed by Johnny Berke (on a 70-yard scamper), George Reynolds, and Ken Hempel, the Felines copped the contest 34 to 18. All conversion tries by the Scots were unsuccessful. JESUIT IS JOLTED BY SCRAPPY SCOTS 36-0 In biting cold the Plaidsmen rolled up 297 yards to the Rangers’ minus 14. Scoring chores were divided among Johnny Berke, Ken Hempel, Smithy Keller, John Beasley, and John Crockett. Jesuit paid tribute to the Scots stating that they would rather beat Hi Park than any other team. Ken Hempel provided the Hi Park score in the rugged Turkey Day encounter. The loss gave the Scots a final record of two wins, three losses, and one tie in their first year of 5AAAA play. Say, couldn't we stop and talk this thing over like gentlemen? BEARCATS ARE BLASTED 34-19 Coming home for another game, the Highlanders crushed the Sherman Bearcats in a rough and tumble tilt, 34-19. Don Alexander plunged over for one score and hit Jay Fikes, Chuck Mansfield, and George Reynolds twice for the others. Fikes converted successfully four times. Shifting into high gear the quintet speeded up to come out third in District 5AAAA with seven wins and five losses. Although outscored, the Scots were never outfought throughout the season as the typical Highlander spirit is truly unbeatable. The Scot offense started clicking by mid- season with a greater degree of consistency thanks to Jack DuLaney’s control of the backboard and the deadly aim of Charlie Fraser. Ernie Kennedy was the spark plug of the Blue and Gold defense, while the constant hustle and point making of Ham Shaw and Bob Sharpe paced the Golden Avalanche to their hard-earned victories. Not to be overlooked is the great spirit of the entire squad throughout the season and the never ceasing efforts of the managers, Pete Peterson and Don Bowman, to serve the team. Highlander reserves, Johnny Apple, Tom Dulaney, and Bill Ballard, added strong support to the team and deserve due merit. Page One Hundred Thirty-seven With her long dress to hide her ankles and a ribbon to tie her hair, the gal of the “Gay Nineties” was ready to participate in the respectable game of tennis. Today in their favorite costume, the blue gym suit, the members of the fair sex play nearly the same Sames as the boys. (ted rtthle Cs Gor . : q Misses Gynne Watson and Jayne Murchison, coaches. Girls’ Sports What is all that noise coming from the west end of the building? It sounds like wild Indians going on a scalping party but a peek in the door reveals a girls’ gym class in action. Each is screaming at the top of her lungs in her excitement over throwing an overgrown Lifesaver across the net to her opponent. This fascinating game, which is played the first six weeks of the fall semester, is known as tenniquoit. Outside it sounds as though a war is being fought by other wild Indians. Upon approaching the field, we find more girls dressed in their native costume, the blue gym suit. They are engaged in a game of speedball, which requires skill in manipulating the ball down the field. For the next four weeks the girls are seen painfully limping around school. The sore and aching muscles are due to the posture and condi- tioning exercises which are part of the physical education program. Although the savage spirit shown earlier in the year has abated, the Indian influence is still to be found, for the exercises are performed to the beat of a tom-tom. After these painful exercises, the fair sex is in condition for their favorite sport, basketball. For two weeks they review the rules and practice shooting for baskets and guarding. The actual games start with the beginning of the third six weeks, and although the girls know the rules, the game still resembles a massacre, for the players in their eagerness to get the ball, often knock one another down. Even though the game is a little rough at the beginning of the season, it smooths out with daily practice. With the opening of the spring term, “Blondie” is seen putting up Page One Hundred Forty the nets for volleyball. Characteristics of this game are broken fingernails and many miscellaneous dislocations. As the ball leaves the server’s hand she waits to see it go over the net, but much to her surprise it lands three courts away. Just as the warriors are beginning to learn volleyball the first six weeks are over and they start firstaid. This schedule has worked out very well, because now they can learn how to treat the injuries resulting from the previous sport. They spend three tedious weeks taking notes and practicing what they have learned on each other. “Now, promenade, single file, Lady in front, Indian style. Stop and swing that squaw behind you. Swing, little Indians, swing!’ The excited chatter and screaming that is usually heard from the gym has changed to music, the sliding two-step, and the square dance call. First period gym plays tennis the last six weeks while the other classes are playing softball and badminton. Four teams play softball while two teams battle with the birdies inside. The girls, forgetting their own strength, swing wildly at the birdie. Their opponents across the net look up, not to hit the birdie, but to see it perched on the rafter. After school the more energetic ones can take part in intramural sports. They are divided into two leagues, the Monday-Wednesday League and the Tuesday-Thursday League. Any girl that comes out for every sport and misses not more than one game can win a gym award. These awards are medals with “Intramural Sports’ written on them. Our hats are off to Miss Murchison and Miss Watson. They are won- derful sports. Reserve Officers Training Corps Our Highland Park ROTC Regiment is among the best of the seven ROTC Units in Dallas. The Highland Park unit does not only broaden the military knowledge of the individual; it also teaches him discipline and lead- ership. A significant reason for the highly rated unit at Highland Park is the spirit and determination among the cadets to go to the top. The unit is under the direct leadership of Lt. Comdr. Floyd Hightower (USNR), who has been the commandant of the cadets since 1946 after his return from duty with the U. S. Navy. His assistant is Major Newman F. Casey. The ROTC Band, under the direction of Col. Instructor Harry Barton, has striven for the utmost in maintain- ing the highest standard of Tuesday parade and for- mal occasions as reviews and inspections. Page One Hundred Fifty-three R.O.T.C. What would a pep rally be without the band? After football season, these musicians get down to work in preparing for the spring concerts. The entire band puts in one hour of practice a day for this, and in addition there are the sectional rehearsals once a week for an hour before school and many hours of individual practice at home. Every year there is a solo contest in which each member of the band must memorize and play a solo, with piano accompaniment, before a judge for criticism. This preparation and the criticism received are of great value in improving one’s musical abilities. A first division in this contest is the goal of each bandsman, for the solo must be near-perfect for this award. As a part of the ROTC unit the band plays for the ROTC parades.
