We, of the 1951 Highlander staff decided that it would be a good thing to preserve for you in the 1951 yearbook, the following scenes of our new sections. We hope that you, as builders of the future, enjoy this tour through the new portions of dear old HPHS as much as we have enjoyed guiding you on this tour. Aheor4e Winel Editor-in-Chief BLE oie? Don’t they know they should be in their first period classes?” Such a comment has probably come from several new students at Highland Park when they have seen the Student Council about to go into one of its weekly thirty-minute sessions. In such a short time what can fifty or sixty students from different rooms accomplish? Just listen and you will see. The Council helps to build school spirit and inter-school relations, which include the sale of rooters’ caps to loyal Scots, the sending of friendship teams to other schools, and the sponsoring of dances after home football games. ; i! It keeps an accurate file of all schedules for student use = ¥ = and publishes annually a complete student directory. Also each spring it sponsors school-wide elections. On the basis of outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character, the fac- ulty decides who are to be honored with membership. Each semester approximately three percent of the 3A class, seven percent of the 4B class, and fifteen percent of the 4A class can be elected. A low honor roll average for a semester automatically brings a student’s name up for consideration. It is the privilege of all National Honor Society members to serve as ushers at special assemblies and senior activities. Keeping the activity cards of all Highland Park students up to date is another big job for the members. To the boy and girl of the graduating class receiving the highest achievement scores during the high school years, the National Honor Society gives the coveted “H” Blanket Award. Scotch plaid background ...A headache for Hi-Lite decorators. Hi-Lites There is only one club at Hi Park that bars boys to its entrance—that is our Hi-Lites Club. Each fall and mid- term, the Friendship Coramittee does a wonderful job of helping the new transfers and 2B’s get acquainted around Hi Park. Another committee is the Program Committee, which plans the meetings that are held each Tuesday at activities period. The Social Committee is responsible for the dances and parties that they have during the year. Some of the more talented members are on the Bulletin Board Committee. They make the posters to keep the girls informed about the meetings and various activities. The Ex-Student’s Committee keeps a record of every girl who graduates from Hi Park. Along with their fun, welfare work is included. The Welfare Committee sends girls to the Mexican Mission every Saturday to assist in the work there. Another job of this committee is to sponsor a rural school through the Save the Children Federation. One of the busiest is the Red Cross Committee, which sends boxes overseas, gives food to the underprivileged, and entertains veterans in hospitals. A Religious Focus Week is planned jointly by the Hi-Lites and Hi-Y. For this, an officer of each club is in charge each day. This organization, an established Highland Park boys club for twenty-eight years, is sponsored by the YMCA. Its continuing pop- ularity is due to the varied types of programs and activities planned. A Monday morning meeting could find a minister, lawyer, or magician holding forth from the auditorium stage, or perhaps a sports film or musical show being presented. Each year seven dele- gates are sent to Austin to participate in the Youth and Government Conference. The club also does welfare work in connection with the Red Cross. This organization spends the year not delving into the Rome of the Caesars, but into the past of Texas, Dallas County, and the City of Dallas. Every historian eagerly awaits the annual meeting in April of the Texas Historical Society in Austin. Highland Park sends representatives who submit articles for pub- lication in “The Junior Historian,” the society's official publication. The winning articles are first read to the Convention. It is in thinking about others that the J.H.S. hits its high point. This Christmas the club adopted a rural school of Brazos County. Each of the twenty-eight students was sent an individual package. TRAVEL CLUB You do not have to have a magic carpet to see the world if you travel via Hi Park’s Travel Club. Members visit a different spot each month by means of illustrated talks or movies on foreign countries. When Mrs. I. O. Miller decided in the fall of 1936 the school needed a club for students interested in learning about other countries, the club came into existence. In fourteen years it has grown to be Hi Park’s third largest club, surpassed only by the Hi-Lites and Hi-Y. It seems they are rehearsing for one of their many programs, such as school assemblies, religious programs, commencement exercises, or some civic club. Why, no, it looks as if it is for one of their many out-of-town performances. Another of their many activities is their participation in the operetta directed by Miss Flora Lee Pope, Mrs. Edna Mae Conner, and Miss Helen Moore. They also take a very active part in the annual Highlander Music Festival. How do you like the new robes the Lassies are sporting this year? The money for them was earned by the group during the magazine drive. Of course, the Lads and Lassies have sone parties where their many soloists and quartet singers show off. Orchestra Gone are the days of weird tones issuing from the dark basement, for the orchestra has moved itself, instrument case and music rack, to the “music hall” addition on the second floor. There the members prac- tice industriously on all types of music from “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” to the “Nordic Symphony.” Music hath charm to soothe the savage beast, and Hi Park students too. The Orchestra’s assemblies are among the most popular. These merry musicians also play for graduation, the operetta, civic clubs, and radio shows. Each spring, as part of the Music Department, they sponsor the Music Festival and prepare a special con- cert. In February, fifteen representatives went to Texas Music Education Association Convention in Galveston. They spent three days playing and contesting with other performers from all over the state. Three times a year the group takes time off to entertain itself (for a change) with a barbecue, or picnic, and a banquet honoring its Senior members. BASKETBALL Playing inspired basketball throughout the year, Highland Park’s 1951 basketeers fought their way io the quarter-finals in Class AA. It was the third consecu- tive year the team had journeyed to Austin. The Scot quintet started the season fast to hold first place in the state standings at mid-season. Lead on by the owl-like eye of Arthur Barnes and the great defensive play of Ed Bernet and Charles Anderson, the Scots were un- beatable. Not to be denied was the consistant floor work and play making of Ronnie Jones and Stewart Carrell. Another constituent of the team, which was shown throughout the season, was the truly, great spirit of the entire squad. Still more help came from the strong support of the reserves, who were sparked by hustling Charlie Holland, Don Morton, and Charlie Fraser. The Blue and Gold also had a sixth man on the court at all times. He was Ralph Binnion, coach, whose untiring efforts resulted in the fine seasons showing of the pointed-court men. The Golden Avalanche took the District title with only one loss. Aquatics When our new coach, and one of our ex-es, Robert M. Hill, took over the training of the 1951 swimmers, he found a record number — twenty-one — aspirants. Returning lettermen were Ed Johnson, Phil Paul, Pat Ptrick, Dave Pfeiffer, Dick Snelling, and Ed Bernet. An innovation begun by Coach Hill was the holding of several duel meets with other high school and college freshmen teams, in order to give training to an almost inexperienced team. Winners of the Southwestern In- terscholastic Swim Meet 1948-’50, state winners in 1948, runners-up 1949, ‘50, third in South Texas AAU, and first in Southwestern AAU in 1948 are among the enviable goals for this year’s group. We are basing our hopes for success in the state meet on individuals such as Ed Bernet, 50-yd. free champ, Pat Patrick, and others. In badminton as well as photography it’s “Watch the birdie.’' ISRG 080 beeen: Mrs. Elsie Berry and Miss Gynne Watson, coaches Girls’ Sports (1) “How many points do we have? (2) Do we have to dress? (3) What's my locker combination?” To an outsider — that is, anyone who has never been a student in the girls physical education department of Hi Park —these questions would only create a maze of confusion, resulting in the following answers: (1) “One on each side of your head. (2) Please do. (3) Couldn’t say off hand, but the F.B.I. might know.” But for a Highlander Lassie, seasoned in the invigorating at- mosphere of the girls’ gym, these are just every-day queries. In order to try to explain, let us take you on a brief tour of the year’s activities. First on the schedule is the girls’ version of that mild boys’ sport — football. This is that amazing creation known as speed- ball. Since one sport alone does not try all of one’s true athletic abilities, this combination of football, basketball, and soccer aims to please all. The equipment necessary is not elaborate, consisting of eleven girls, a soccer ball and two goals. The difficulty comes when all these things clash in the battle to kick or throw the ball between the opponents’ goal. The result of scoring is not only two points, but also a case for the doctor. Now as we are convalescing from speedball, we watch the other teams play tenniquoit indoors. The rules of this are similar to volley- ball, but points are scored by the skillful handling of a small, rubber ring, which is hurled back and forth by two teams. This fast life slows down during the next six weeks period to the routine of conditioning (re-habilitating) exercises. As we perform our exercises to the enchanting beat of a tom-tom, hips melt away, ankles grow slimmer, an soon even Betty Grable will have nothing on us. The fall semester comes to a close with the all-time favorite basket- ball. The first few days are spent re-learning all that has been forgotten since the year before. Then our skills are put to a rigid test as six guards and six forwards exhause themselve s in a fight to the finish on half the space usually allowed for such tactics. In the spring a young girl’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of — oh Page One Hundred Forty-four well — volleyball. This game is the tall girl’s delight as she spikes the ball over the net into the surprised arms of her shorter opponent. In this sport too, “teamwork” is the key which unlocks the door for the winner of the class tournament. Our baggy, patched, faded — BUT CLEAN — gym suits are given a new lease on life during the next six weeks. They are gaily adorned with the red and black rags — oops — pinnies, which distinguish the boys from the girls as they “swing grandma and the sweet lil’ gal from Arkansas.”’ Folk tunes are also part of our “dance routine.” “This game is strictly for the birds.” Yes, girls, we mean badminton. Although usually a game for single opponents or for teams of two, at Hi Park a larger team is required to retrieve the more ambitious birdies from the rafters. While two teams stay in the gym following the pursuits of the “rackets,” where do you think the other four teams are? Listen closely and far in the distance you will hear a chorus of “Take me out to the ball game.” This announces the arrival of the other girls at the softball diamond, where our future Babe Ruths sharpen up their batting eyes. os If you think our sports end at four o’clock, as the academic subjects do, you are in for a surprise. Thrills are provided for still another hour as intra-murals get under way. Any girl in school may enter the fun either in the Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday league. The championship between the two leagues is determined by an exciting playoff. The outcome of the basketball championship is witnessed by the entire student body in a special activities program. In addition to intra-murals, class tournaments and all-star competition are held. All this elaborate sports program would be impossible without the untiring efforts and patience of our gym teachers, Miss Gynne Watson and Mrs. Jack Berry. They have taught us not only skill in athletics, but an appreciation of good sportsmanship, and the truth of the saying — “It is not if you won or lost, but how you played the game.” May we briefly. but sincerely say — “Thanks for everything!“ Tenniquoit INTRAMURAL WINNERS Reading up: Captain Mary Pingree, Jody Carmichael, Lou Swain, Marilyn George. The Band One could not have gone to the High- lander Music Festival without noticing the spectacular accomplishments of the High- lander Park Senior High Band. Not only were they the Royal Musicians to Queen Mary Frances | of the House of Myers, but they were the source of the wonderful school spirit at Hi Park pep rallies. To the laymen of Highland Park, the Band is known chiefly for its beautiful music, attrac- tively arranged, and expertly directed. Yes, “All hail to thee, dear Hi Park High” even their exacting director, Col. Emerson J. Boroughs, can be well pleased with the Band’s successes, accomplishments, and rightful praise in 1950-51. In this small space we can name but a few of the Band’s accomplishments. They played in football games at Sherman, Breckenridge, Tyler, Denton, McKinney, and Waco. In playing at assembly concerts the band appeals directly to the student body. A number of band members eagerly await the summer when they go to Camp Dallas or Camp Pacific for instruction, fun, and experience. However, being a band member is not all work. In the full year of engagements they squeeze in a delightful ban- quet at the Dallas Country Club, The band also had.a wonderful time while camping and picnicing over- night at Lake Dallas.
